History

BABT was created in 1946 by DSc. Marcos Augusto Enrietti, who proposed the establishment of a journal to publish the scientific and technological progress made by researchers of the former Institute of Biology and Technological Research (now TECPAR). The journal was originally titled "Arquivos de Biologia e Tecnologia [Archives of Biology and Technology]".

Starting in 1999, the journal underwent a name change to “Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology” and started publishing papers exclusively in English. Furthermore, BABT opened to the entire national and international scientific communities, expanding its authorship to researchers from various Brazilian and foreign institutions. These transitions significantly improved BABT’s role in promoting and sharing knowledge across the national and international scientific community.

Unethical research practices and BABT guidelines

In this section we briefly describe the main ethical problems that may occur during and after the publication process. Several other types of misconduct are described by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), but here we opted to present the following cases: plagiarism, duplicate publication, undisclosed conflicts of interest, and fraud. For authorship policies and disputes, please check BABT’s authorship section.

(1) Plagiarism
Plagiarism occurs when an author presents someone else's work, ideas, words, or images as their own without proper attribution. It ranges from the unreferenced use of others' published and unpublished ideas, including paraphrasing to certain degrees, to the submission of a complete paper under "new" authorship.

What is not accepted:

  • Direct copying of text, images, or data without permission or acknowledgment.
  • Using ideas without proper citation to the source.
  • Submitting a manuscript with paraphrased content that is not original.

Procedure:

  • BABT employs iThenticate plagiarism detection software on all submissions during the desk review stage.
  • If plagiarism is detected during the review process, the manuscript will be returned to the authors for clarification. If the authors fail to provide satisfactory explanations or evidence of originality, the manuscript will be rejected.
  • In cases of published articles where plagiarism is later discovered, BABT will retract the article and publish a notice of retraction explaining the reason.
  • Authors involved in plagiarism may be barred from submitting to BABT in the future.

BABT will use the following COPE’s flowcharts to handle plagiarism cases:

(2) Duplicate publication
Duplicate publication occurs when an author submits the same manuscript, in whole or in part, to more than one journal. This also includes publishing the same research findings in multiple articles without proper cross-referencing, justification, or transparency. Preprints and articles published in conference proceedings are not considered duplicate publication. Please check BABT's policies on prior publication for more information.

What is not accepted:

  • Submission of the same manuscript to multiple journals simultaneously.
  • Submission of an article already published in a different journal (this also includes articles translated into a different language)
  • Publishing parts of a manuscript as separate articles without clear, justified reasons and without explicit cross-referencing.

Procedure:

  • Authors are required to disclose any related manuscripts that are submitted or in press at the time of submission.
  • If a duplicate submission is identified, the manuscript will be immediately rejected.
  • In the case of published articles, if a duplicate publication is discovered, the article will be retracted, and a notice of retraction will be issued.

(3) Undisclosed conflicts of interest
A conflict of interest exists when an author, reviewer, or editor has financial, personal, or professional affiliations that could bias their decisions, conduct, or manuscript content. The non-disclosure of these conflicts may lead to a breach of ethical standards and compromise the integrity of the publication. Therefore, it is crucial for authors, reviewers, and editors to disclose any potential conflicts of interest in order to maintain transparency and ensure an unbiased evaluation of the manuscript.

What is not accepted:

  • Failure to disclose relevant conflicts of interest at the time of submission or review.

Procedure:

  • Authors must disclose all potential conflicts of interest in their manuscript submission.
  • Reviewers and editors must disclose any conflicts that could affect their impartiality and recuse themselves from the process if necessary.
  • If undisclosed conflicts of interest are discovered during the review process, the manuscript may be rejected or the review process may be halted until the conflicts are properly addressed.
  • If undisclosed conflicts of interest are discovered after publication, BABT will publish a correction or retraction, as appropriate, and may take further action depending on the severity of the oversight.

(4) Fraud
Fraud in scientific publishing includes data fabrication, falsification, or manipulation, and unethical research practices that significantly mislead readers and the scientific community.

What is not accepted:

  • Fabrication, falsification, or manipulation of data.
  • Misrepresentation of research findings or methods.
  • Unethical research practices.

Procedure:

  • If fraud is suspected prior to publication, the submission will be halted and may be rejected based on the appropriate evidence.
  • In cases where fraud is detected after publication, the article will be retracted, and a notice explaining the reasons for the retraction will be published.
  • Authors found to have committed fraud may face sanctions, including a ban on future submissions and notification to their institutions.

BABT will use the following COPE’s flowcharts to handle fraud cases:

Focus and Scope

BABT publishes original and review articles on the intersection between Life (Biology in a broad sense) and Technology. Papers must cover one or two specific areas described below and must focus on technological development and innovation. The abstract and the introduction must explicitly justify the paper's application in one of these specific areas.

1) Biological, Medical and Health Technologies
The papers submitted should cover topics such as new medicines, medical devices, vaccines, and related products including advanced materials and nanotechnology, aimed at improving human and animal health. This area focuses on technological progress that strengthens health promotion, disease prevention and treatment, and physical rehabilitation. It also includes topics like innovative diagnostic methods and the One Health approach.

2) Agricultural Technologies, Biotechnology and Environment
This category encompasses papers that address technological advancements and innovative solutions for sustainable agricultural and food/feed production. It also includes studies on biotechnology-based products. Articles focused on the energy transition towards a low-carbon matrix, as well as strategies for enhancing environmental quality, conservation, and biodiversity preservation, are also pertinent to this area of BABT.
Target audience: BABT’s target audience consists of researchers, professors, graduate students, and other professionals in the field.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprint servers

Preprints are the initial versions of research manuscripts that authors post to open access repositories before they undergo official peer review in a journal. They can be posted before or at any point throughout the peer review process.

The journal's policy is to allow the submission of manuscripts previously posted on a preprint server, and this will not affect its evaluation. In such cases, however, authors are required to provide full details about the preprint, such as the DOI (or other permanent URL) and licensing terms, when sending their submission or at any other stage during the evaluation.

Important: If a submission is accepted, it is the author's responsibility to ensure that the preprint record is updated to include a full reference, including the DOI that links to the published article.

Below we include a list of suggested preprint repositories:

  • arXiv: Preprints for physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, statistics, electrical engineering and systems science, and economics.
  • bioRxiv: Preprints for biology.
  • ChemRxiv: Preprints for chemistry.
  • medRxiv: Preprints for health sciences.
  • OSF Preprints: Multidisciplinary preprint server.
  • Preprints.org: Multidisciplinary preprint server.
  • Research Square: Multidisciplinary preprint server.
  • SciELO preprints: Multidisciplinary preprint server.
  • Zenodo: Accepts research data from all disciplines.

Preprints should be cited in the article reference list.

Peer Review Process

Peer review process

BABT’s peer review process occurs in four stages, described below:

(1) Desk review. The editorial staff will evaluate the newly submitted article in terms of compatibility with BABT's mission and scope and adherence to formatting guidelines. At the submission, authors must properly use the template and follow the instructions presented in the section “Brief guide for submission.” The cover letter is also mandatory and must observe the respective template. Once the manuscript has passed these phases, it is evaluated in terms of writing quality and passes through a similarity verification using iThenticate anti-plagiarism software. The manuscript that does not follow these criteria will either be immediately rejected (in the case of a misfit regarding mission/scope or plagiarism) or returned to the authors for corrections. This procedure is aligned with the journal’s ethics policy on plagiarism (please read it before submitting).

(2) Editorial review: If the manuscript passes through the desk review, it will be evaluated by one of the Editors-in-chief, depending on the field of knowledge. The Editor will evaluate the article's regionalism and scientific relevance. If they consider that the manuscript meets those criteria, it will be sent to one of the associate editors. Otherwise, the manuscript will be rejected.

(3) Peer review: The associate editor will choose a minimum of three reviewers to assess the manuscript. In the event that one of the reviewers declines to review the manuscript, it will be sent to other reviewers. In rare cases, the manuscript may be rejected if the associate editor doesn't find reviewers willing to evaluate it. The invited reviewers will assess the manuscript based on its quality, rigor, relevance to the subject, and contribution to existing knowledge. The evaluation is conducted using a single-anonymized procedure, where the identities of the authors are known to the reviewers and editors. The associated editor needs at least two reviews to make a decision using the information provided by reviewers in their assessment.

(4) Decisions, appeals, and withdrawals: All articles published in BABT go through at least one round of review, usually two or three, sometimes more. At each stage, the editor will evaluate the manuscript with editorial colleagues in light of reviewers' reports and send a decision report to the author presenting one of the following results:

  • Accepted: The paper is immediately accepted for publication.
  • The manuscript requires minor revisions: the authors must make certain changes in response to the referees' feedback. In these cases, revised papers are usually not returned to the referees since additional scientific/technical work is not necessary. The work is usually accepted for publication once the editors have ensured that the referees' advice has been incorporated.
  • The paper needs a major revision, pending the authors’ response to the referees’ comments: In these cases, additional investigation or technical work may be required to resolve some or all of the referees' concerns. In these circumstances, revised papers are returned to some or all of the referees for a second assessment. The modified papers should include a detailed response to each of the referees' points.
  • The paper is rejected because the referees have raised considerable technical objections and/or the authors’ claim has not been adequately established: Under these conditions, the editor's note will specify whether a resubmitted version should be considered. If the editor has suggested that the authors resubmit, they must verify that all of the referees' technical remarks have been successfully addressed (not just a few of them), unless the editor clearly states otherwise in the note. The submission must include a point-by-point response to the referees' remarks, as well as the revised text. Editors will not send resubmitted manuscripts to reviewers unless the authors have made a significant effort to address all of the referees' recommendations.
  • The paper was rejected (appeal is possible): In these cases, authors are strongly encouraged not to resubmit a corrected version, as it will be rejected without further review. If the authors believe they have a compelling scientific basis for reconsideration, they can appeal the judgment in writing via email. The key criterion for a successful appeal for reconsideration is that the author can identify a specific technical or other point of interest that the referees and editors previously overlooked. Appeals written in broad or ambiguous words, or that incorporate arguments unrelated to the subject of the text, are unlikely to be successful. Manuscripts cannot be submitted elsewhere while an appeal is being reviewed.
  • Withdrawals: At any time, the author can ask to withdraw the manuscript from the system by emailing babt@tecpar.br with the subject [Manuscript ID*] Withdraw the manuscript. Withdrawals must be well justified since the submission and review process involves time and resources from the journal and reviewers.

Submissions by editors or editorial board members

BABT is committed to ensuring the integrity and fairness of its peer review process. To address potential conflicts of interest and maintain transparency, the following policy applies to submissions by editors or members of the editorial board:

  • Non-involvement: No editor or member of the editorial board will have any involvement in the review or editing of a manuscript that they submit. This includes all correspondence, decisions, and oversight of peer reviews pertaining to their submission.
  • Independent Review: An independent associate editor who is not associated in any way with the submitting authors will handle submissions from editors or editorial board members. This editor will oversee the peer review process, ensuring it adheres to the same standards of rigor and fairness applied to all submissions.
  • Single-anonymized Review: We will ensure that the peer review procedure for these submissions follows a single-anonymized process, where only the authors are unaware of editor and reviewer identities.

Data availability and Supplementary Material

The Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology (BABT) encourages authors to share their research data in accordance with current best practices and privacy laws. Additionally, BABT requires and publishes the author-supplied "Data Availability Statement". Below, we include suggested repositories.

Clinical Trials

A clinical trial is a research study that assigns individuals or a group of individuals to an intervention, either with or without comparison or control groups, in order to investigate the connection between a health-related intervention and a health outcome. Health-related interventions refer to many methods employed to alter a biological or health-related result. These methods encompass medications, surgical procedures, devices, behavioral treatments, educational programs, dietary interventions, quality improvement initiatives, and changes in the process of care. Health outcomes refer to any measurable biological or health-related indicators seen in patients or participants, encompassing pharmacokinetic measurements and adverse events (ICMJE, 2024).

BABT requires that all clinical trials are registered in a public trials registry at or before the time of first patient enrollment as a condition of consideration for publication. The trial must be registered in a registry listed in the WHO registry network or in one that meets ICMJE criteria, such as ClinicalTrials.gov. The registration number and the name of the trial registry must be included in the manuscript's Methods section. Please check the author's guidelines to know how to properly report this information.

DEIA policies

BABT is committed to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) within our scientific community. We believe that a diverse and inclusive environment enriches the scientific discourse, promotes innovation, and enhances the quality of research published in our journal.

DEIA strategies

Diverse Representation:

  • Promote diversity in our editorial board, reviewer pool, and authorship to reflect the global scientific community.
  • Actively pursue contributions from underrepresented groups in science and academia.
  • Follows the policy guidelines of The Sex and Gender Equity in Research - SAGER, assuming the commitment to report sex and gender information in the study design, data analysis, results and their interpretation process when applicable.

Equitable Peer Review Process:

  • Implement peer review processes and practice to minimize biases.
  • Provide training to editors and reviewers on recognizing and mitigating unconscious bias.
  • Ensure that feedback to authors is constructive, fair, and focused on the scientific content and quality of the work.

Fees

Article processing/publishing charges

BABT does not use article processing/publishing charges as a source of funding for the journal’s maintenance. Hence, BABT does not charge authors for the submission or publication of their articles. However, English proofreading is not covered by the journal, and authors are responsible for ensuring the quality of language in their manuscripts before submission. BABT’s editors may request additional revisions, also covered by the authors, to improve the clarity and readability of the manuscript. Authors are encouraged to carefully review their work and consider professional proofreading services to enhance the overall quality of their submission.

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

Corrections and retractions

This policy delineates the fundamental principles and systematic methods that BABT adheres to when addressing inaccuracies in published publications, regardless of whether these errors stem from the authors or the publication process. We are dedicated to maintaining the honesty and transparency of the scientific record by adhering to rigorous correction practices.

Corrections: Minor errors, such as typographical problems, that do not impact the comprehension or validity of the article will be rectified by an erratum notice, which will be linked to the original article. In cases of minor errors in the article's content (not affecting the overall conclusions of the paper) or metadata (authors' names, authors' affiliation, title, abstract, funding information, etc.), BABT will issue a correction notice that provides specific information on the mistake and the correction that has been made. The original article will be hyperlinked to the correction notice and vice versa.

Retractions: Articles may be retracted if they have clear evidence of unreliable data (data fabrication or falsification), plagiarism, duplicate publication, unethical research practices, or significant errors that cannot be corrected with a correction notice.

  • Data fabrication: deliberate act of generating false data or outcomes and subsequently documenting or presenting them in scientific study.
  • Data falsification: deliberate manipulation of research data with the intention of creating a misleading impression. This encompasses the act of altering images in order to distort or falsify research findings.
  • Plagiarism: using another individual's work, concepts, or language without giving proper recognition or acknowledgment.
  • Duplicate publication: submitting the same manuscript to numerous journals simultaneously, or submitting previously published publications that describe essentially the same study, regardless of whether it is a whole, partial, or modified copy.
  • Unethical research practices: includes all the above and other types of unethical behavior, such as evidence of undisclosed conflicts of interest, lack of consent from participants, human subject exploitation, and other forms of research misconduct.

The decision to retract an article involves consultation with the editorial board and the authors. A retraction notice, explaining the reason for the retraction and who initiated the process, will be published. The original article will remain online, marked clearly as retracted and linked to the retraction notice.

To identify and handle these cases, BABT will use the following guidelines and recommended practices, as well as other guidelines from COPE and other reputable organizations in the field of scientific publishing if necessary:

Other cases will follow guidance from COPE.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

Conflicts of interest

All authors, reviewers and editors are obliged to disclose any possible conflict of interest in relation to the article. This includes, but is not limited to, financial, personal, political, intellectual or religious interests that may influence the preparation or review of the work.

Authors must disclose any financial, personal, or professional relationships that could be viewed as potential conflicts of interest concerning the manuscript. This statement should be included in the manuscript at the time of submission following the provided template. If no conflicts exist, authors should state, "The authors declare no conflict of interest.". Each author must fill and save the ICMJE Conflict of Interest disclosure Form and the submitting author must upload them in a single Zip file.

Reviewers and editors must refuse to evaluate or process articles with which they believe they have a conflict of interest, so that they can be replaced by another reviewer or editor.

To investigate suspected undeclared conflicts of interest identified after submission, the editorial team will carry out a preliminary investigation based on COPE guidelines.

  • COPE Council. COPE Flowcharts and infographics - Undisclosed conflict of interest in a submitted manuscript - English. https://doi. org/10.24318/cope.2019.2.6 ©2021 Committee on Publication Ethics (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0)

If a potential conflict of interest is detected, the authors will be contacted to provide clarification. The entire investigation and resolution process will be documented to ensure transparency and integrity.

Use of Artificial Intelligence resources

The use of tools and resources that assist authors in the preparation of their manuscripts is recommended, as long as attribution rules are followed, and ethics and scientific integrity are upheld.

Authors have the right and freedom to use tools and resources that aid in the preparation, writing, review, and translation of their articles, book chapters, or books. Many of these tools and resources are provided by AI applications.

However, it is important to note that only humans can be considered authors, following the following rules and practices:

  • Inform/mention the sources of materials used in research and manuscript writing. Any use or content generated by an AI application must be mentioned in the abstract and in the methods section or equivalent.
  • Ensure that all cited material is properly attributed, including full citations, and that the cited sources support the claims made by the AI application, as it is not uncommon for AI to generate references to nonexistent works.
  • Assume public responsibility for their work.
  • Concealing the use and content of AI is an ethical lapse that violates principles of transparency and honesty in research.

For more information please check the Guide to the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools and Resources in Research Communication on SciELO.

Ethics Committee

Human and animal rights

BABT is committed to the highest standards of research ethics and integrity in all publications involving human and animal subjects. In alignment with the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) guidelines, this policy outlines the ethical considerations and requirements for authors submitting research that involves human participants, human data, or animals.

Human Rights
Research involving human participants must have been conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki and must have been approved by an appropriate ethics review board. Authors must explicitly mention this approval in their manuscript, including the name of the ethics committee and the reference number of the approval. Please check the author's guidelines to know how to properly report this information.

Informed consent (on paper or electronically) must have been obtained from all participants or their legal guardians. This must also be explicitly mentioned in the manuscript, along with details on how consent was obtained and documented. The editor may request additional documentation to verify that the necessary ethical requirements have been met.

For research involving patient data, authors must demonstrate how they have protected participants' privacy and confidentiality. Details, images, or videos relating to individual participants must be published only if essential to the research and if the participant (or guardian) has given written consent for publication.

Animal Rights
Research involving animals must adhere to the ARRIVE guidelines or equivalent and must have been approved by an appropriate animal welfare ethics committee. The manuscript must include a statement identifying the committee that granted approval and the relevant ethics approval code. All studies must comply with international, national, and/or institutional guidelines for the humane treatment of animals and should strive to minimize pain, suffering, and distress to the animals.

Enforcement and Compliance

  • Documentation: Authors must provide all necessary documentation related to ethical approvals, informed consents, and animal welfare considerations upon request.
  • Non-Compliance: Manuscripts found not to be in compliance with this policy will be rejected. If ethical concerns arise after publication, BABT reserves the right to take action, including but not limited to retracting the article and notifying authorities or institutions as appropriate.
  • Allegations of Misconduct: Allegations of unethical conduct in research involving humans or animals will be investigated. BABT is committed to ensuring accountability and rectifying any breaches of ethical conduct.

Reporting Guidelines

BABT is committed to enhancing the transparency, reproducibility, and quality of research published in our journal. To achieve this, we require authors to adhere to standardized reporting guidelines for the preparation and presentation of their research. This policy is based on reporting guidelines from the EQUATOR Network.

Self-archiving is the process of submitting one's own academic work, such as research articles, to an online repository or website. This practice promotes the accessibility and visibility of research findings. This policy defines the self-archiving rules for authors who are submitting or publishing in BABT. The following guidelines outline what version of the manuscript can be self-archived, where it can be deposited, and any embargo periods that may apply.

  • Published version. Where to archive/deposit: publication is allowed on any website, repository, or social network. Embargo: none.
  • Accepted version. Where to archive/deposit: publication is allowed on the author's homepage, institutional repository, institutional website, and subject repository. Embargo: none.
  • Submitted version. Where to archive/deposit: publication is allowed on preprint servers (please verify our prior publication policy). Embargo: none.

In all cases, the article must be made available in open access and include the full citation in case of accepted articles.

Sponsorship and advertisements

BABT does not allow the advertisement of products/services nor sponsorship from other organizations.

Author´s responsability

All authors must sign the Declaration of Responsibility and License Agreement. By signing this form, the authors accept that the manuscript will be published under the Creative Commons Attribution license, as well as declare if the eventual existence of any financial support and conflict of interest have been stated. Moreover, the authors must declare that the manuscript was held in accordance with the procedures and regulations adopted by the Research Ethics Commission of the Institution of origin. BABT also asks the authors to collect and archive an informed consent in all human clinical research, and case reports when the patient's privacy may be menaced by any possible identification data. Once obtained, the Informed consent, should be kept under the researchers' responsibility and made available if requested by the journal. The authors are asked to state in the declaration form if the informed consent was collect and archived.

All the journal content and the papers published by BABT, except where otherwise specified, are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution CC-BY license.

Authors retain copyright of their studies by licensing it under the Creative Commons Attribution license, which allows papers to be reused and distributed with no restriction, provided that the original source is properly cited.

BABT encourages Authors to self-archive their accepted manuscripts by publishing them on personal blogs, institutional repositories and academic social media, as well as posting them on their personal social media, as long as the full citation to the journal's website version is included.

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Publication model and frequency

BABT follows an article-based publication template and is published as a single annual volume. Accepted articles are published as soon as they are ready (revised by the authors, proofreaded, and edited).

The Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology encourages and expects authors to familiarize themselves with all of the journal policies as well as the "Manuscript Preparation and Submission" recommendations developed by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, the guide to preparing a manuscript, the template and the following guidelines prior to preparing and submitting their manuscript. ICMJE Manuscript Preparation.

Guidelines for preparing for submission

General policies

The following sections detail BABT’s editorial policies that guide the journal’s editorial process. Some important information that authors should be aware of before submission:

  • All manuscripts should be submitted in English. BABT does not accept submissions in other languages.
  • The opinions expressed in the manuscripts are the sole responsibility of the authors and do not reflect the views of BABT or its editorial board.
  • The corresponding author must possess a thorough understanding of BABT’s editorial rules and assume full responsibility for interacting with the journal and facilitating communication among co-authors.
  • The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all authors are listed, that the order of authorship is agreed upon by all authors, and that all authors agree and are aware of the manuscript's submission.
  • Similarities will be verified in the manuscripts through a specific plagiarism verification software (iThenticate), providing a report to support the decision regarding the manuscript’s originality and adherence to the journal’s ethics policies.

Language policy

All manuscripts submitted to BABT must be written in English. The journal will not accept articles written in a different language. Before submitting, we advise authors to send the paper for revision by an expert, preferably someone with scientific experience in the knowledge area. This is especially important for authors without prior experience writing in this language. The editorial team might suggest minor revisions in the text to improve clarity, coherence, and readability of the manuscript.

Section policies

Original articles: Original articles should present novel findings, theories, or insights in the fields of biology and technology. The manuscript should contribute new knowledge or understanding to the field. It must clearly articulate the scientific question addressed and the significance of the work to the advancement of the field.

Review articles: Review articles should provide a comprehensive analysis of recent advances in specific areas of biology and technology. The review should cover a well-defined aspect of interest to BABT’s mission and scope,  providing a critical evaluation of current progress and identifying future challenges. BABT gives preference to systematic reviews.

Authorship

Authorship criteria

BABT is committed to following the highest standards of publication ethics and integrity, aligning with the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommendations for authorship recognition. Being an author grants recognition and carries significant intellectual, social, and financial consequences. Authorship encompasses both responsibility and liability for the published material.

BABT follows the ICMJE (2023) recommendations on authorship, considering the following four criteria:

  1. Substantial Contributions: Making significant contributions to the conception, design, acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
  2. Drafting and Revising: Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND
  3. Final Approval: Providing final approval of the version to be published; AND
  4. Accountability: Agreeing to be accountable for all aspects of the work, ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

The authors must satisfy all four criteria and be capable of assuming public responsibility for their contributions. It is the collective responsibility of the authors to determine that all individuals named as authors meet all four criteria. They should have full confidence in the accuracy and integrity of the work of all co-authors. Those collaborators who do not meet all four criteria should be included in the Acknowledgments section (please see the section below). The COPE flowchart on identifying authorship problems will be used by editors in case the editors themselves or BABT’s editorial team identify any suspicious authorship issues. Authors are also encouraged to familiarize themselves with the guidelines provided by COPE to ensure transparency and ethical authorship practices.

Disputes and authorship changes

Requests for changes in authorship (addition or removal of authors) after manuscript submission or publication require a detailed explanation and signed statements of agreement from all listed authors and the author to be added or removed. All declarations previously submitted (such as conflict of interest, funding, and author contributions) must be updated accordingly in the case of changes in authorship to maintain accuracy and transparency. In cases of suspected misconduct, readers, and authors are encouraged to contact the journal's editorial office for further investigation and resolution. The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Guidelines on the subject will be applied to the resolution of any potential authorship disputes.

Author contributions

To promote transparency, BABT requires a detailed description of the contributions of each author to be provided at the time of submission using the CRediT taxonomy. This taxonomy includes 14 categories that cover different aspects of research contribution, such as conceptualization, data curation, and writing. By providing this information, BABT aims to ensure proper credit is given to each author for their specific contributions to the research. This also helps in avoiding any misunderstandings or disputes regarding authorship roles and responsibilities.

Acknowledgements

Individuals who made contributions to the work but do not fulfill all four criteria for authorship should be acknowledged but not included as authors. Contributions that are insufficient to warrant authorship encompass activities such as securing money, providing overall supervision, offering administrative support, and aiding with editing or proofreading.
The corresponding author must get official approval from all acknowledged individuals and organizations to ensure that a study's data and findings are recognized by them. Authors should provide this information if requested by the editorial team.

Conflicts of interest

Authors must disclose any financial, personal, or professional relationships that could be viewed as potential conflicts of interest concerning the manuscript. This statement should be included in the manuscript at the time of submission following the provided template. If no conflicts exist, authors should state, "The authors declare no conflict of interest.".

Financing Statement

Authors must acknowledge any financial support or funding they have received for their study. This encompasses elucidating the involvement of the sponsoring entity in the study's design, data collection, analysis, data interpretation, and article composition, if applicable.

Prior publication

This policy outlines BABT’s stance on the submission of manuscripts that have been previously disseminated in other forms, including but not limited to preprints, conference proceedings, and translations. Our goal is to support the scientific community's need for sharing research while ensuring that the work published in BABT is novel and significantly contributes to the literature.

Conference proceedings

Manuscripts based on work previously reported at academic conferences, workshops, or similar scientific meetings may be submitted to BABT. Each conference submission type has a different policy, as follows:

  • Papers published only in abstract format: may be submitted as full-length articles without the need for significant changes or additions.
  • Short papers: may be expanded and developed into full-length articles for submission to BABT. Authors should highlight any changes or improvements made to the study to distinguish it from the original conference presentation.
  • Full papers published in conference proceedings: the paper submitted to BABT should include a more comprehensive examination or supplementary information that goes beyond the paper presented and published at the conference. This is necessary to justify its publication and to ensure its originality and contribution to the field.

The authors must disclose the details of the conference at the time of manuscript submission. Please indicate the conference name, location, and date in the submission system. For all paper types, also highlight if there were any changes in authorship and appropriate reasoning. As indicated, short papers and full papers must also include a detailed account of the modifications and additions made to the article.

Translations

Translations of work previously published in another language are not eligible for submission to this journal because they do not meet the requirement of presenting new and original research findings.

Submissão Online

BABT uses an online submission system (ScholarOne) where authors can submit and track the progress of their manuscripts.

We ask all authors to read all the policies and instructions listed above before starting the submission process.

Here authors will find a guide to help with submission.

Acceptance and publication

1. Notification of Acceptance

  • Editorial Decision: After review, the editors decide whether or not to accept the article. Decisions may include:
    • Acceptance The article is approved in its current form, and may or may not require minor adjustments at the layout stage.
    • Rejection and resubmission: The manuscript is rejected in its current form but is invited to resubmit to the journal after revisions.
    • Rejection: The manuscript is rejected and the reason sent by email.
  • Notification: The lead author receives an email notification informing them of the acceptance decision. This email may include instructions for final revisions, if necessary.

2. Preparation for Publication

  • Layout: The editorial team prepares the article in its final format for publication and requests any necessary adjustments. At this stage, no changes are allowed to the content, authorship or any issue that requires peer review.

3. Proofs and Final Approval

  • Sending proofs: The author will receive the proofs of the article in its final format, usually in PDF. This is a last chance to proofread the content, correct typographical errors and make sure everything is correct.
  • Approval of proofs: The author approves the proofs or sends final corrections. After approval, the article is finalized for publication.
  • BABT will ask to the authors to send a press release following the standard SciELO in Perspective | Press Release blog. The template can be accessed here: modelo_press-releases_en.docx
The BABT team will give preference to the publication of articles that submit a press release.
  • All materials must be sent to babt@tecpar.br in the final correction email in which the author states that the article is suitable for publication. The name of the press release file should be: "Press release - BABT XXXX-XXXX" and in docx format.

4. Publication

  • DOI assignment: A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) will be assigned to the article.
  • Online publication: The article is published online in the current issue or a future issue of the journal. It will be available to readers via the journal's Scielo website

5. Distribution

  • Distribution: The article can be distributed through various channels, such as electronic bulletins, social networks, and the journal's newsletters.

Final considerations

  • Communication: Throughout the process, it is important to maintain open communication with the editorial team to clarify doubts and ensure that the process runs smoothly.
  • Deadlines: Each journal has its own deadlines for final review, approval of proofs, and publication, so it's important to be aware of these dates to avoid delays.

Guidelines to preparing a manuscript

To prepare the manuscript, download the template available on the periodical's website, which contains the main rules for formatting the document. Some of these rules are presented in more detail in this file. If you still have any questions, please contact the support team at EMAIL.

Document size and formats

Manuscripts, including the first page, figures, tables and references should not be longer than 15 pages.

Authors may use whatever software they prefer to prepare their manuscript as long as the main manuscript file conforms to the template provided and is submitted in .docx format and is compatible with MS Office 2010 or higher.

Image quality

Images should be included in the original text, where they should be located, numbered and captioned (according to the template). As this is a 100% online publication, authors can use different colors to prepare their images. Figures will not be reworked or edited by the journal team, so authors should check that they are uniform in the type size and font used throughout the article.

Figures must be legible, understandable and clear, with all their elements in a single image (without layers), and move in line with the text, so that if any layout changes are necessary, the figure does not move out of its intended position or fit in with the text. Images and graphics must not be manipulated or adjusted in a way that results in a misinterpretation of the information.

For graphics, we suggest that you follow the good practices for creating graphics.

https://blog.dp6.com.br/how-to-choose-better-charts-for-my-data-dataviz-basics-2-of-4-ee78b72e558c

Text inserted into images must be clear, concise and legible. If symbols, arrows and text are used, they should contrast with the image and, if they are used for identification purposes, they should be included in the caption.

Although the use of color is permitted, it is important that authors make every effort to ensure that the use of color does not impair understanding for readers with vision disorders. We recommend that the following resources be consulted before preparing figures using color:

Measurement units

When writing about measurements, use a space between a number and its unit. SI or SI-derived units should be used where possible; if you use alternative units, please explain to the editors why it is necessary. Middle dot (always use middle dot as multiple sign in units) or a normal space can be used in units; however, they must be consistent throughout the paper. For example:

3 × 108 m·s−1.

Do not leave a space before a percentage (%) symbol, since the symbol is part of the number and not a unit. The same applies to degree (°) symbols when used for angles, so write 90° but 90 °C.

A space is optional between wt%, mol%, vol%, at% or wt.%, mol.%, vol.%, at.%, but keep the format consistent within a paper. Other formats are not allowed, e.g.,wt %, % wt.

For some common time units and measurement units, it is recommended to use abbreviated units if Arabic numerals are in front of them.

Powers of 10 can be indicated by a prefix to a unit. The following table shows terms that can be used in this way. For example, 1 pm = 1 × 10−12 m.

Nomenclature and acronyms

Authors should only use well-established nomenclature and acronyms in the manuscript. Abbreviations should not be used in the title and abstract of the article. When abbreviations are used in the text, unless it is a standard unit of measurement, the full text should be used, followed by the correct abbreviation in brackets when mentioned for the first time.

Tables

Tables must be inserted in table format in MS Office, tables submitted as a figure will be rejected. Additionally:

1.  Tables should be named and cited using consecutive Arabic numerals such as Table 1, Table 2, etc.
2.  The same data in graphs should not be repeated in tables.
3.  Diagonal cell divisions should not be used.
4.  All tables must be cited in the text.

References

BABT uses the Vancouver style adapted by the National Library of Medicine and used as a guideline by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

Authors are solely responsible for the accuracy of all bibliographical references listed and cited in the submitted manuscript.

When preparing the manuscript, authors must ensure that:

1. the references used are accurate and have not been retracted recently;
2. all references are properly cited in the text;
3. citations are numbered sequentially as superscript numbers and inserted after punctuation marks, without brackets or parentheses;
4. journal names are abbreviated correctly; and
5. whenever reference management software is used (such as Endnote, Reference Manager, etc.), the field codes must be converted into plain text before submitting the manuscript.

Below, we have included a small sample of the most commonly used bibliographical references. Please check out an extensive list of many other examples and details athttp://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html.
