ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Brief Background

BOLEMA – Bulletin of Mathematics Education is one of the oldest and most important publications in the area of Mathematics Education in Brazil. Mathematics Education, in short, seeks to provide answers to educational phenomena related to Mathematics. Intending to disseminate scientific production in Mathematics Education or related areas, BOLEMA publishes articles related to the teaching and learning of Mathematics and/or the role of Mathematics and Mathematics Education in society. It is linked to the Postgraduate Program in Mathematics Education (PPGEM) and the Institute of Geosciences and Exact Sciences (IGCE) of the Universidade Estadual Paulista – Unesp de Rio Claro – and is already considered an international journal, with an editorial board and consultants renowned, in the country and abroad, having been evaluated as a QUALIS A1 journal by CAPES.

Created in 1985, BOLEMA was born from the initiative of a group of postgraduate students from PPGEM at Unesp in Rio Claro – the first postgraduate study center in this area in Latin America. The first two issues were circulated in 1985. From the year 2000, it maintained, without interruption, the biannual periodicity, and since 2008, meeting the community's demand, it became quarterly with submissions received in a continuous flow. From 2024 onwards, publication began in a continuous flow, aiming at greater agility in the dissemination of Brazilian research in Mathematics Education.

Open Science Compliance

BOLEMA is committed to Open Science communication practices, which establish ways of formatting, designing, managing, communicating, and evaluating research and its communication. Open Science aims at the transparency of processes and the availability of the components that underpin their communication, such as methods, data, and computer programs. In order to join the Open Science movement, BOLEMA operates in a continuous publication mode and accepts submissions of articles already linked in preprint repositories.

Articles submitted for publication must be unpublished, in printed or electronic media, except those available in preprint repositories, and simultaneous submission for evaluation in another journal is not permitted.

At the time of submission, the responsible author must complete and attach the Open Science Compliance Form (https://wp.scielo.org/wp-content/uploads/Formulario-de-Conformidade-Ciencia-Aberta.docx ), informing: (a) whether the manuscript is a preprint and, if so, its location; (b) whether data, program codes and other materials underlying the text of the manuscript are properly cited and referenced; and, (c) open options are accepted in the peer review process. The editors involved in the evaluation process are named in the published article.

Ethics in Publication

When submitting articles, the author must declare that all ethical guidelines regarding the integrity of scientific activities carried out during the research were respected, as well as inform funding sources, such as research agencies. If applicable, the author may declare that the ethical principles were submitted to and approved by the ethics committee of their institution. Compliance with good ethical practices in research is the exclusive responsibility of the author.

BOLEMA is based on: the principles of SciELO's Codes of Ethics, present in the “Guideof Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication ”; in the “Principles of Transparency and Good Practices in Academic Publications” recommended by the CommitteeonPublicationEthics (Committee on Publication Ethics [COPE]; in the principles of the Directoryof Open Access Journals (Directory of Open Access Journals [DOAJ]; and in the principles of Open Access ScholarlyPublishersAssociation [OASPA].

For research in a virtual environment, the CONEP document – National Research Ethics Commission – is used as a reference. For researchers abroad, consult an equivalent document or contact the executive editors.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

BOLEMA accepts the publication of preprint articles, which in addition to accelerating the communication of research results, allows the author to receive feedback on the work from readers and make any modifications he deems pertinent.

Preprint is defined as a manuscript ready for submission to a journal and which is deposited on trusted preprint servers before or in parallel with submission to a journal.

The use of the preprint is the author's option, and it is assumed that when submitting the article to the journal, through the Open Science Compliance Form, the name of the Preprint server and the Preprint DOI will be informed.

Articles submitted to preprints share the originality of the publication with the journals and the evaluation process will not use the double anonymized procedure, as the authorship will become known.

Peer Review Process

BOLEMA's editorial policy defines the following criteria for evaluating submissions: compliance with formatting requirements; originality; thematic relevance; clarity and precision in delimiting the object; theoretical and methodological consistency of content; analytical rigor; current affairs; text quality; and adequacy to the editorial scope. The text can be submitted in Portuguese, Spanish, and English.

The submitted works go through three phases of evaluation:

(1) the first consists of screening carried out by the Editors-in-Chief and Executive Directors, who examine the adequacy of the work to the scope of the journal and analyze its degree of similarity;
(2) the second phase refers to the preliminary evaluation by the Associate Editors, which aims to identify the potential for publication;
(3) the third phase consists of the peer review process, with the Associate Editors indicating at least two reviewers in double-anonymized evaluation, except for articles made available on preprint servers or whose authors opt for open evaluation (Conformity Form with Open Science) with a “simple anonymized” evaluation.

The Editors-in-Chief's final decision on the submission will be supported by the recommendation of the Associate Editor and the reviewers, generally members of the BOLEMA Editorial Board, as well as by the author's implementation of the recommended adjustments, if this is the case.

An article may be rejected in evaluation phases 1 and 2. If the article reaches the third phase of the evaluation process, it is up to the editors, after peer review, to recommend acceptance, rejection, or reformulation of the work. It is reiterated that the opinions of the Associate Editor and reviewers are advisory in nature. The result of the evaluation will be sent to the author and may include:

1) approval;
2) approval with minor modifications;
3) new submission after major modifications; or
4) rejection.

“Approval with minor modifications” implies checking the modified material (final version) by the editor and/or, if necessary, by the reviewers responsible for the initial analysis. The indication of “new submission after major modifications” implies that, if the article is resubmitted, the beginning of a new evaluation process.

During the evaluation process, for authors who opted for open evaluation, BOLEMA offers the Associate Editor the option of communicating directly with the corresponding author, whether or not their identities are open.

BOLEMA publishes in the final version of the article the names of the editors involved in its evaluation process.

The authors, after final approval of the article, must sign a term of commitment and assignment of rights, declaring:

(a) that the article refers to original, unpublished research, and
(b) that allow the publication of the original in a specific edition of BOLEMA (assignment of rights).

In particular, BOLEMA does not consider dissertations and theses as previous publications and only accepts articles already presented at conferences or similar events if the version submitted to BOLEMA is significantly and demonstrably expanded, in theoretical and/or methodological terms, in relation to the version already available. , and this situation must be conveniently recorded in a footnote in the submitted original, and cases of submission under these terms must be explicitly communicated in advance to the editor.

Open Data

Valuing the consolidation of Open Science processes, if relevant to the evaluation of a submission, the author will be asked to share all content (data, program codes, and other materials) underlying the text of the manuscript, previously or at the time of publication. Exceptions are allowed in cases of legal and ethical issues.

The objective is to facilitate the evaluation of the manuscript and, if approved, contribute to the preservation and reuse of data and information, as well as the replicability of research.

For sharing, the author can use the repository of their institutions, as well as identify relevant and certified repositories: List of repositories for depositing SciELO research data.

Alternatively, the author may state that the data will be made available upon direct request to the author or that all data are contained and discussed in the article.

The repository where the data and information are located, if applicable, must be cited in the text in accordance with the Research Data Citation Guide, preferably in the methodological section, included in the list of references, and in the “Data Availability” section of Research”.

Fees

BOLEMA does not charge submission or publication fees, relying on funding from Unesp itself and agencies such as CAPES and CNPq, which may become unfeasible if these sources do not maintain their support.

Authors who have approved articles will receive, in the decision communication for their article, the option to translate their text for bilingual publication. If you opt for these services, you will be charged a specific fee.

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

When submitting an article for publication in BOLEMA, the author must declare that all ethical guidelines regarding the integrity of scientific activities carried out during the research were respected, as well as inform funding sources, such as research agencies. If applicable, the author must declare that the ethical principles were submitted to and approved by the ethics committee of their institution. Compliance with good ethical practices in research is the exclusive responsibility of the author.

All articles will be evaluated by taking into account social markers of difference, such as gender, sexual orientation, race, religious belief, and nationality, among others, as well as the authors' political positions.

As for the authorship of the work, all authors who contributed to the conception, development, and analysis of the data presented are identified as authors. Therefore, it is the author's responsibility to identify and include all co-authors who effectively collaborated in writing the article. All authors must demonstrably accept responsibility for the content of the article accepted for publication.

Before publishing the article and at the request of the Executive Board, authors must carry out a final review of their texts.

If the author discovers that there was any type of relevant error after publishing the article, he or she must immediately inform the editors, so that the appropriate errata can be published. In the case of corrections caused by negligence on the part of the authors in the final review of their article, the authors will be charged operational fees for the production and publication of an errata.

In relation to the identification of misconduct, consisting of the practices of plagiarism, self-plagiarism, and republication of articles, as well as data falsification, BOLEMA uses the Turnitin software, which produces a similarity report associated with a percentage score, which varies from 0 % to 100%. All articles that exceed 25% similarity, including self-citation, will be analyzed by the Editors-in-Chief, who will request a position from the authors, if necessary.

However, if there is a failure in the process of detecting misconduct and the article is published, the author becomes subject to editorial sanctions, such as retraction of plagiarized or already published scientific articles.

BOLEMA is based on: the principles of SciELO's Codes of Ethics, present in the “ Guide of Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication ”; in the “Principles of Transparency and Good Practices in Academic Publications” recommended by the CommitteeonPublicationEthics (Committee on Publication Ethics [COPE]; in the principles of the Directoryof Open Access Journals (Directory of Open Access Journals [DOAJ]; and in the principles of Open Access ScholarlyPublishersAssociation [OASPA].

For research in a virtual environment, the CONEP document – National Research Ethics Commission – is used as a reference. For researchers abroad, consult an equivalent document or contact the executive board.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

It is mandatory for authors to declare the existence or not of conflicts of interest, as the reliability of the peer review process and the credibility of published articles depend in part on how conflicts of interest are managed during writing, peer review, and decision-making. decision-making by editors. The conflict of interest may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature.

Conflicts of interest may arise when authors, evaluators, or editors have interests that, apparent or not, may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts.

In this way, it is expected:

Authors: When submitting a manuscript, they are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced their work. They must acknowledge all financial support for the work and other financial or personal connections in relation to the research. If authors consider that there is a potential conflict of interest, they must inform this in a signed document attached to the submission platform. For more information see: Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities and Conflicts of Interest.

Reviewers: Must disclose to the editors any conflicts of interest that could influence their opinions of the manuscript, and must declare themselves unqualified to review specific manuscripts if they believe that doing so is appropriate.

Editors: They must declare potential conflicts of interest in the evaluation of manuscripts, as well as act to prevent conflicts of interest involving authors and evaluators from compromising ethical standards in publication.

Adoption of Similarity Software

In relation to the identification of misconduct, consisting of the practices of plagiarism, self-plagiarism, and republication of articles, as well as data falsification, BOLEMA uses the Turnitin software, which produces a similarity report associated with a percentage score, which varies from 0 % to 100%. All articles that exceed 25% similarity, including self-citation, will be analyzed by the Editors-in-Chief, who will request a position from the authors, if necessary.

Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources

The use of tools and resources that assist authors in preparing their manuscripts is recommended as long as attribution norms are respected and scientific ethics and integrity are upheld. Thus, authors have the right and freedom to use tools and resources also provided by Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications, which assist in the preparation, writing, revision, and translation of their articles. However, only humans can be authors, according to the following norms and practices:

  • Disclose the sources of materials used in the research and writing of the article. Any and all use or content generated by an AI application must be reported in the abstract and in the methods section or equivalent. These contents generated by AI tools should be cited and referenced as a non-retrievable source and/or similar to personal communication;
  • Ensure that all cited material is correctly attributed, including complete citations, and that the cited sources support the statements of the AI application, as it is not uncommon for them to generate references to non-existent works;
  • Assume public responsibility for their work;
  • Concealing the use and content of AI is an ethical failure that violates the principles of transparency and honesty in research.

Gender and Sex Issues

All articles will be evaluated by taking into account social markers of difference, such as gender, sexual orientation, race, religious belief, and nationality, among others, as well as the authors' political positions.

Manuscripts submitted to BOLEMA must comply with the principles of the Guideline on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (Sex andGenderEquity in Research - SAGER), which guide the reporting of information about sex and gender in study planning, data analysis and results and interpretation of findings.

Per this guideline, the terms sex (biological attribute) and gender (shaped by social and cultural circumstances) must be used carefully in order to avoid confusion in their use.

Furthermore, BOLEMA observes the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board.

Ethics Committee

When submitting an article for publication in BOLEMA, the author must declare that all ethical guidelines regarding the integrity of scientific activities carried out during the research were respected, as well as inform funding sources, such as research agencies. If applicable, the author must declare that the ethical principles were submitted to and approved by the ethics committee of their institution. Compliance with good ethical practices in research is the exclusive responsibility of the author.

Copyright

The authors of articles published by BOLEMA maintain the copyright of their works, licensing them under the Creative Commons CC-BY license, which allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, as long as the original work is correctly cited.

Intellectual Property and Terms of Use

BOLEMA content, except where otherwise specified, is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0.

Call for Papers for the Thematic Section “PPGEM 40 Years”

The Postgraduate Program in Mathematics Education (PPGEM) at the Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp) is one of the first postgraduate programs in Mathematics Education in Latin America. Its history began with its foundation in 1984 and, currently, it has a master's degree and a doctorate, both academic. In 2024, PPGEM will complete forty years of activities, and over these almost four decades, its numbers are remarkable, with almost four hundred master's degrees and three hundred doctorates completed.

In 1985, the Mathematics Education Bulletin (BOLEMA) was born from the initiative of a group of PPGEM postgraduate students, with the publication of the first two issues, becoming one of the oldest and most important publications in the area of Mathematics Education in Brazil. BOLEMA, whose birth was linked to the PPGEM of Unesp in Rio Claro, has consolidated itself in the scenario of Brazilian scientific publications, having been evaluated as a national QUALIS A1 journal by CAPES.

In this context of history, connection and affection between PPGEM and Revista, BOLEMA opens space to highlight the publication of research carried out by students, teachers and researchers who are part of the history of construction of PPGEM and, consequently, of BOLEMA, in the thematic section: “PPGEM 40 years”. The purpose of this thematic section is to present an overview of research related to Mathematics Education developed by (former) teachers, students and graduates of PPGEM. In addition to these three categories, submissions will be accepted from post-doctoral fellows and visiting professors certified by UNESP who have developed activities at PPGEM for at least six months, which must be explained in the submission form.

Important information:
- Submission of articles: until February 18, 2024.
- Estimated publication of articles in BOLEMA: throughout volume 38, in continuous flow, in 2024. Approved articles whose review has not been completed in time for publication in 2024 may eventually be published in 2025.
- The first author of the text must be a (former) teacher, student or graduate of PPGEM. This rule does not apply to other co-authors.
- Articles must be sent via the ScholarOne platform and submitted in the thematic section “PPGEM 40 years” through the system available at: https://www.scielo.br/journal/bolema/about/#instructions .
- It is important to highlight that all articles submitted to the aforementioned thematic section will go through all stages of the Journal's evaluation process.
- All texts must be formatted in the magazine template and follow the rules for preparation and formatting available at: https://www.scielo.br/journal/bolema/about/#instructions .
- Each author may submit one and only one article proposal for the thematic section, either as main author or co-author. Authors can submit articles for evaluation and possible publication outside the thematic section “PPGEM 40 years” of BOLEMA, explaining that the author cannot have more than two articles published in 2024, including the thematic section.
- Questions about the thematic section can be resolved with the executive directors, via email: bolema.contato@gmail.com .

Editors-in-Chief:
Marcus Vinicius Maltempi and Roger Miarka.

Executive Directors:
Andrei Luís Berres Hartmann, Franciele Santos Teixeira and Lais Cristina Pereira da Silva.
