EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

The ACR recognizes the importance of new media in scientific communication and allows readers and researchers to have faster access to recent research results before publication. Therefore, ACR accepts manuscripts that have been deposited on non-commercial preprint servers.

A preprint is a preliminary version of a scientific work that is shared publicly in online repositories before peer review and publication in a scientific journal. It is a way to accelerate the scientific communication process, allowing researchers to share their results more quickly with the academic community. Preprints can be found in public repositories such as bioRxiv , medRxiv and SciELO Preprints, which are platforms dedicated to publications in the Health area. These repositories are maintained by non-profit organizations and are open to the public for free reading and downloading. .

To ensure that preprints submitted to ACR are treated with transparency and integrity, it is mandatory that authors complete and submit the Open Science Compliance Form. This form should be sent as a Supplementary File along with the manuscript.

This information is important so that ACR editors can evaluate the originality and relevance of the submitted work, as well as to avoid duplication or redundant information in subsequent publications.

Peer Review Process

ACR follows a double anonymous peer review process in which two or more reviewers are assigned to evaluate articles. During the evaluation process, the identities of reviewers and authors are kept mutually confidential.

  • Compliance with Standards: Initial analysis is performed by the Editorial Assistant to ensure compliance with the Instructions for Authors. If the manuscript does not meet the established standards, it will be returned to the authors for correction. Once it is considered appropriate, it is sent to the Editor-in-Chief.
  • Initial review by the editor: The editor reviews the manuscript to determine its suitability for the peer review process. If the manuscript is considered of insufficient quality or outside the scope of the journal, it will be rejected without further processing.
  • Evaluation Process: the Editor-in-Chief evaluates the quality and interest of the manuscript and sends it to the Associate Editor of the Area. This, in turn, evaluates the manuscript and sends it to two reviewers.
  • Reviewers' opinions: Reviewers submit their opinions directly to the ScholarOne system. Based on these opinions, the Associate Editor makes the editorial decision to accept, request revisions, or reject the manuscript. The decision is then transmitted to the editor-in-chief.
  • Approval or Rejection: The Editor-in-Chief decides whether to approve the manuscript for publication or reject it, and the decision is communicated to the authors. If accepted, the manuscript enters the publication process.

To ensure a fair, transparent, and high-quality peer review process, and in accordance with practices of openness and anonymity in the context of scientific publishing, the ACR encourages the policy of revealing the names of the editors responsible for the evaluation in the final report. article. This practice reinforces the journal's commitment to the integrity of the editorial process and recognizes editors for their crucial role in maintaining the publication's quality standards.

Preprint Peer Review Process

ACR uses a specific method to review preprints (scientific articles before their formal publication). In this method, called single-anonymous peer review, the reviewers (other experts in the field) know who the authors of the preprint are, but the authors do not know who the reviewers are. This approach seeks to balance transparency (reviewers can consider authors' expertise) with impartiality (reviewers are not influenced by authors' reputations).

This process ensures a critical and unbiased evaluation of preprints before possible publication in ACR.

Whenever necessary, ACR will ask the authors of preprints to provide detailed information on the methodology used in the research, the results obtained and the conclusions reached, so that reviewers can adequately evaluate the quality of the work.

The ACR may also request information from authors about any peer review that the preprint has already passed in another repository, if applicable, to help reviewers make a more complete assessment of the quality of the preprint.

Open Data

ACR encourages the practice of open data to promote the transparency and reproducibility of scientific research. Authors are encouraged to make the raw data underlying their research results available in open access repositories wherever possible. The provision of data must follow ethical and privacy standards, ensuring that sensitive or personal information is adequately protected. The repository https://data.scielo.org (Portuguese only) is recommended.

To align with these principles, ACR requests that all data sets associated with submitted manuscripts be accompanied by the Open Science Compliance Form. Authors should complete this form in detail, highlighting how the research meets open science standards, and submit it as a supplementary file along with the manuscript.

This practice ensures that all relevant data are available for review and analysis, contributing to the integrity and reproducibility of scientific research. Adherence to these guidelines reinforces the ACR's commitment to transparency and excellence in scientific publications.

Fees

ACR does not charge fees for the submission, review, publication, distribution or downloading of articles, keeping the publication completely free and open access.

However, for articles originally written in Portuguese, authors are responsible for arranging and covering the costs of translation into English.

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

Audiology - Communication Research (ACR) follows strict ethical standards in research, including the need for approval from research ethics committees and informed consent from participants. The journal does not tolerate any form of scientific misconduct, such as plagiarism, falsification or fabrication of data, and will take appropriate action if such practices are suspected or proven.

The ACR complies with the principles and good practices on ethics and negligence in scientific publications. COPE and the Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication.

Errata: in case of errors identified after the publication of an article, the ACR will publish an erratum with the necessary corrections, guaranteeing the accuracy and integrity of the scientific information disclosed. Guide to recording, marking and publishing Correction (Portuguese Only): https://wp.scielo.org/wp-content/uploads/guia_errata.pdf.

Retraction: In exceptional situations, such as the identification of serious errors or scientific errors that compromise the validity of the conclusions of an article, the ACR may retract the work. The retraction will be duly communicated to readers and indexers, and the article will remain available online with a note indicating the retraction and the reasons that justified it. Guide for registering, marking and publishing a retraction (Portuguese Only): https://wp.scielo.org/wp-content/uploads/guia_retratacao.pdf.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

The conflict of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic or financial in nature. Conflicts of interest may occur between authors, reviewers or editors.

As part of the manuscript submission process, authors must declare any actual or potential conflicts of interest that may be considered to influence the research (for example, financial interests in a test or procedure, or funding by an equipment manufacturer or materials for effectiveness research).

Sources of external support for the research, including funding, equipment, and supplies, should be named during the submission process. In addition, authors must disclose any financial or other non-professional benefit that may result from publication of the manuscript and that reviewers or readers may consider having affected the completion or presentation of the work.

If in doubt about what may be considered a conflict of interest, the author must opt for full disclosure, reporting the potential conflict when requested during submission. The role of the supporting organization, if any, in the collection, analysis and interpretation of the data, and the right to approve or disapprove publication of the final manuscript, should also be detailed during the submission process. If a supporting agency claims the right to approve/disapprove publication, the author must have completed this process at the time of submitting the manuscript.

If, in the editor's judgment, the author has an actual or potential conflict of interest, this conflict must be acknowledged with a disclosure statement on the first page of the article. The authors will be informed of this decision before acceptance.

All authors must complete the Conflict of Interest Statement. This declaration aims to guarantee transparency and ethics in scientific publication.

For detailed guidance on conflicts of interest, we recommend consulting the ICMJE and WAME guidelines.

For more information: Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest.

Adoption of similarity software

ACR magazine adopts Ithenticate software to guarantee the originality and integrity of submitted works. This tool helps identify possible plagiarism and self-plagiarism, promoting ethics and transparency in the publication process.

After the standards adjustment stage carried out by the Editorial Assistant, the submitted articles go through the similarity software. The magazine determines the 30% similarity rate of a single source as a critical indicator. The percentage indicated in the generated report will be analyzed by an editor, who will have the final responsibility for deciding the submission.

The use of Ithenticate reinforces the ACR journal's commitment to good research and scientific publishing practices, ensuring that published articles are original and contribute significantly to the advancement of knowledge in the area.

Adoption of software using Artificial Intelligence resources

The ACR journal requests that authors declare any use of artificial intelligence (AI), large-scale language models (LLM), or similar technologies in the production of the text included in their manuscripts, whether that text is used in whole or in part. This requirement includes text generated during the initial brainstorming or structuring phases, which was then incorporated into the manuscript. The following statements must be made at the time of initial filing:

  • Attestation of inclusion of text generated by AI or LLM: Authors must declare that the manuscript contains text generated by AI or LLM.
  • Responsibility of authors: Authors must confirm that they take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality and integrity of the AI or LLM generated text included in the manuscript.
  • Additionally, authors must include the following information listed below in the manuscript itself:
  • Artificial Intelligence Use Statement: A specific section should be added at the end of the main text, before the References section, detailing the use of AI or LLM. For example: Artificial Intelligence Statement: ChatGPT was used during [DESCRIBE DETAILS], and the authors reviewed the resulting text before including it in the manuscript.
  • Parenthetical citation and corresponding reference: Each text fragment generated by AI or LLM must be followed by a parenthetical citation, with a corresponding entry in the References section. For example: Reference: OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (March 14 release) [Large Scale Language Model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat

The ACR journal also clarifies that AI, LLM or similar technologies cannot be credited as authors. This decision is based on the following criteria:

  • IA or LLM do not meet the authorship requirements defined by ICMJE and WAME
  • IA or LLM do not have the ability to transfer copyright.
  • IA or LLM cannot declare conflicts of interest.
  • IA or LLM cannot respond to authorship queries or disclaimers.

These guidelines do not exclude the use of AI in areas such as research design, data analysis and verification, or manuscript formatting (e.g., Paperpal, Grammarly). Additionally, ACR policies related to the use of AI and potential cases of scientific misconduct, such as image manipulation, do not change.

Gender and Sex Issues

The ACR journal prioritizes the use of inclusive language that respects differences and promotes equal opportunities in the writing of scientific manuscripts. Authors are encouraged to avoid bias, stereotypes, slang, and references to dominant culture in their texts. It is important to avoid descriptions of irrelevant personal attributes and use plural nouns to achieve gender neutrality. In addition, terms that may be offensive or exclusive in scientific terminology should be avoided.

In accordance with the SAGER Guidelines, the ACR highlights the importance of explicitly including and analyzing sex and gender data in research where appropriate. Authors should clearly describe the methods used to determine sex and gender and discuss how these variables influence research results. It is crucial to discuss the relevance of sex and gender to the results and consider these differences when interpreting the data. This commitment to accuracy and fairness in research is reflected in both the content and language of the manuscripts.

For more details on inclusive writing practices, see the SAGER Guidelines and Chapter 11 of the AMA Manual of Style, 11th Edition.

About Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs)

Audiology - Communication Research (ACR) values the high quality and scientific rigor of the articles it publishes. Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs) are considered the gold standard in experimental clinical research due to their ability to provide robust evidence on the effectiveness and safety of healthcare interventions. By randomly assigning participants to treatment groups, RCTs minimize bias and ensure that differences observed between groups can be directly attributed to the intervention being studied.

RCTs are essential for evaluating new therapeutic approaches, hearing technologies, diagnostic methods and rehabilitation interventions. The inclusion of RCTs in the ACR ensures that healthcare professionals have access to reliable, high-quality data, enabling the implementation of evidence-based practices and continuous improvement in patient care.

The ACR encourages the submission of rigorously conducted RCTs with sound methodological design, appropriate statistical analysis, and detailed discussions of the applicability of results.

Main features

Randomization

  • Process: Participants are randomly assigned to intervention or control groups. To guarantee this randomness, methods such as random number tables or specialized software are used.
  • Objective: Randomization equally distributes known and unknown factors between groups, minimizing bias and ensuring that differences in outcomes are attributable to the intervention.

Study groups

  • Intervention Group: Receives the treatment or intervention under study.
  • Control Group: Receives a standard treatment or placebo, serving as a comparator to evaluate the effects of the experimental treatment.

Blinding

  • Single blinding: participants do not know which group they have been assigned to.
  • Double Blinding: Neither the participants nor the researchers know the group assignment, avoiding bias in the administration of treatment and evaluation of results.

Results and outcome measures

  • Primary and secondary outcomes: The specific outcomes that the study aims to evaluate, such as treatment effectiveness or complication rates, should be clearly defined before the study begins.

CONSORT Guidelines: To ensure the quality and transparency of RCT reporting, the ACR journal requires authors to follow the CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) guidelines. These guidelines include:

CONSORT flow diagram: Diagram showing the number of participants in each phase of the study, from screening to the final analysis, including those who were excluded and the reasons for those exclusions.

Detailed description

  • Complete information on randomization, blinding, interventions and outcome measures.
  • Description of how the sample size was calculated and the statistical methods used.

Transparency: Notification of any deviation from the original study protocol and presentation of both negative and positive results.

Registration of Clinical Trials: All clinical trials must be registered prospectively in recognized databases, such as the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (REBEC) or the WHO platform. The registration identification number should be included in the “Methods” section of the manuscript.

ACR Randomized Clinical Trial Submission Guidelines

  • Clinical Trials Registry: Only clinical research articles with an identification number in a recognized Clinical Trials Registry (REBEC – Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry or WHO platform ) will be accepted.
  • Prospective Registration: All clinical trials must be registered prospectively in recognized databases, such as REBEC or the WHO platform.
  • Identification Number: The identification number of the record must appear in the “Methods” section of the manuscript.
  • CONSORT Guidelines: Randomized controlled trials should follow the CONSORT guidelines, which include:
    • the CONSORT flowchart.
    • Detailed descriptin of randomization, blinding, interventions and outcome measures.
  • Trial protocol: The complete trial protocol, including the statistical analysis plan, must be submitted along with the manuscript.

Following these guidelines guarantees the transparency, quality and reliability of clinical trials published in the ACR journal, promoting excellence in scientific research.

Manuscript Preparation

Audiology - Communication Research (ACR) recommends using the guidelines to ensure transparency and reproducibility of the research. The journal encourages authors to follow standards for the design, implementation, and reporting of findings:
