Cadernos Pagu - ISSN 1809-4449 Online Version Cadernos Pagu – an interdisciplinary quarterly publication – accepts articles from various fields of knowledge (Anthropology, Political Science, Communication, Law, Education, History, History of Science, Literature and Linguistics, Psychology, Public Health, Sociology, among others), which, considering the intersections of gender and other differences (race/ethnicity, culture, class, age/generation, sexuality, and others), establish a dialogue with gender and feminist theories, as well as contribute to the expansion of knowledge in this field of study. Articles should consider the relationships of the addressed issues with the social and political contexts in which they are situated. Dialogue with authors from diverse backgrounds is equally important. Contributions in Portuguese, Spanish, or English are welcome. The content of the signed works is the sole responsibility of the authors, as is the selection of descriptors (keywords). Cadernos Pagu is an online, open-access, and free journal. All published material, including that from before indexing in SciELO, is available at https://www.pagu.unicamp.br/publicacoes.html and http://periodicos.sbu.unicamp.br/ojs/index.php/cadpagu. |
Brief Background
The publication of Cadernos Pagu began in 1993 and has since contributed to the establishment of the field of gender studies in Brazil. The journal was created at a time when gender studies already had some academic legitimacy in the country, and its intention was to increase visibility by disseminating and stimulating the production of knowledge in the area. The creation of Cadernos Pagu was the result of more than two years of readings, research, and debates, during which members of the Gender Studies Nucleus – Pagu at Unicamp mapped the advancements in gender-related production and its challenges. The first issue was entirely written by members of the Nucleus, with articles reflecting these concerns. Between the second and third issues, the publication redefined its editorial policy and simultaneously opened up for contributions from Brazilian and foreign researchers. To facilitate this, an ad-hoc review board was established, along with the Editorial Committee and Board. From the fifth issue onwards, the journal received external funding from the university. Indeed, there are two key moments in the publication's history, evident in various aspects of the journal, which are linked to securing support from different agencies – FAPESP, FAEPEx (Support Fund for Teaching, Research, and Extension at Unicamp), and especially CNPq, which provided the most significant support in terms of resources and continuity from 1996 onward. This funding was crucial for the growth of the publication, not only concerning improvements in graphic quality and the incorporation of more texts but also in adapting to editorial standards, expanding the Editorial Board, and registering with various national and international indexes. Cadernos Pagu, an interdisciplinary quarterly publication, aims to contribute to the expansion and strengthening of the interdisciplinary field of gender studies in Brazil and to the exchange of knowledge produced internationally. It publishes original articles with scientific contributions that foster theoretical and methodological innovation or provide innovative empirical knowledge, as well as discussions around relevant theoretical texts in the field of gender studies, thereby facilitating the dissemination of knowledge in the area and a critical reading of international production. |
Open Science Compliance
This journal follows the Gold Open Access model. In the section Behind the Production of Feminist Knowledge, open reviews that have been mutually agreed upon by authors and reviewers of the submitted manuscripts will be published. In each published article, the names of the editors responsible for the evaluation process will be indicated. |
Ethics in Publication
The journal Cadernos Pagu is vigilant about plagiarism, conflicts of interest, research misconduct, and authorship declarations, as well as ensuring that articles provide their research data, such as citations, references, and availability for consultation. We recommend that all authors interested in submitting articles to the journal consult the Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication from SciELO. At the time of submission, the author must declare that all ethical guidelines concerning the integrity of the scientific activities conducted for the research have been respected, as well as inform their funding sources. If applicable, they must also declare that ethical principles have been submitted to and approved by their institution's ethics committee. Adherence to good research ethics practices is the sole responsibility of the author. Cadernos Pagu is guided by the principles of the SciELO Ethics Codes, as outlined in the Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication; the "Principles of Transparency and Best Practices in Academic Publishing" recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE); the principles of the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ); and the principles of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA). |

Preprints
The journal accepts articles previously submitted to the SciELO Preprints platform. In these cases, the journal should be notified at the time of submission of the article, which will be subject to all the stages of the evaluation process established by cadernos pagu, with the information about authorship and anonymity of evaluators. |
Peer Review Process
Cadernos Pagu adopts a peer-review policy for the analysis and evaluation of all submitted manuscripts. The reviews of articles previously attached to the SciELO Preprints platform will follow the peer-review analysis modality indicated. In the section “Behind the Scenes of Feminist Knowledge Production”, open reviews that have been authorized by both authors and reviewers of the submitted manuscripts will be published. In each published article, the names of the editors responsible for its evaluation process will be indicated. Evaluation Criteria Articles are evaluated considering formal aspects — clarity, objectivity, compliance with the journal's rules — and content aspects — dialogue with feminist and gender studies, innovative empirical, theoretical, and/or methodological contributions, consistency of arguments, theoretical-methodological coherence, and evidence to support the arguments. Articles undergo a three-step evaluation filter:
Evaluation Time The time between submission and final decision takes, on average, 10 months. If approved, the article enters the editing phase. The date of submission of the final version marks the article's position in the publication queue. The status of the article can be tracked through the SciELO Submission platform. |
Open Data
The journal Cadernos Pagu does not share data and metadata of published articles. Specializing in gender studies, the journal publishes texts resulting from research that involves sensitive data, as is the case with all research involving human subjects in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Aiming to protect this data, the journal's policy is not to share this information. However, the section 'Behind the Scenes of Feminist Knowledge Production' aims to publish metadata developed by the authors, providing visibility to the research processes in the field of feminist and gender studies. |

In addition to this practice, designated reviewers must declare any conflicts of interest with the article to be evaluated before issuing their assessment. Any conflict of interest prevents the evaluation. |

Behind The Scenes of The Production of Feminist Knowledge A section of the journal cadernos pagu dedicated to the reflection and publication of raw research materials, which can contribute to the development and problematization of varied and important questions to feminist thought and knowledge. It aims to make academic processes visible through which articles, reviews and dossiers are made. The section is subdivided into two subsections: Documents and Critical Comments. Documents publishes research materials such as interviews; documentary sources; photographs, accompanied by an introduction that justifies the relevance of publicizing these materials for the development of feminist knowledge production. Submissions to the section must be made by letter to the publisher, always respecting. Submitted documents are evaluated by the editorial committee. The introduction can have a maximum of 2500 words. The submission must be unpublished and anonymous. In Critical Comments, evaluations will be published, issued by ad hoc referees, of articles approved for publication in the journal. The decision about which opinions will be published as Critical Comments in the journal concerns the Editorial Committee of the cadernos pagu. Dossier A dossier is an articulated and heterogeneous set of articles (between five and ten), which offers critical reflection about the theme in focus, and its various and diverging theoretical, conceptual, and methodological sources. Proposals for a dossier should be sent to the journal editors in Portuguese and English, justifying 1) the historic and current relevance of the proposal for feminist and gender studies, articulated to other differences; 2) the divergences or tensions contemplated and the contributions to the expansion upon, improvement and or deepening of the theme and its impact on various disciplinary fields (from 6,500 to 12,000 characters with spaces). Proposals for dossiers submitted to cadernos pagu will be evaluated by the journal’s editorial committee. In case of approval, an open call for papers will be published on the journal’s homepage (for two months) for the submission of articles. The proponents who will coordinate the dossier will at first receive expanded abstracts (from 6,500 to 12,000 characters with spaces) with proposals for articles. The expanded abstracts should present the plan for the article, with details of: a) the object of analysis; b) an outline of the theoretical-methodological debate that supports the argument; c) a demonstration of how the article proposed advances or innovates the state of the art of the field of gender studies and feminist theories in dialog with the theme of the dossier. After selection of the abstracts by the coordinators of the dossier, the authors should submit their article on the Plataforma Scielo within three months. In this step, all the articles will be submitted individually over the Plataforma Scielo and undergo blind peer review. The evaluations of each article will be shared with the organizers of the dossier and the editorial decisions will be taken in collaboration with the editors of the journal and the editorial committee. We highlight that the dossier should include approximately 30% foreign authors and authors from a minimum of three Brazilian states, preferentially beyond Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. We estimate a period of one to two years between acceptance of a dossier proposal and its publication. It is the responsibility of the organizers to communicate the deadlines and the format to those selected to participate in the dossier. |
Translation Policy
An article can be submitted in Portuguese, Spanish, or English. Contributions in Portuguese and Spanish will be published in the original language, and may also be published in English, in accord with the interests and possibilities of the authors. An English version of an article submitted in Portuguese and Spanish is optional, but is strongly encouraged to expand international circulation of Brazilian and Latin American studies. The translations will be made at the expense of the authors, preferentially with professionals indicated by the journal. Translations conducted by professionals who are not recommended by the journal will be reviewed and edited by the translators/copyeditors registered with cadernos pagu. This editing will be paid for by the authors. |
Form and preparation of manuscripts
The articles must never have been published. Articles that have been submitted to other periodicals will not be considered. The manuscripts should be anonymous. References to theses, articles and institutional affiliation of the authors cannot be included in the body of the text or in the bibliographic references. If the article is attached to SciELO Preprints, it is understood that it is not anonymous. Editorial Process cadernos pagu
EDITORIAL STAFF:
1. First evaluation. Participants: editors, interns, and editorial committee If the article does not comply with the journal’s norms, the submission is rejected. The message that explains the reason for the rejection (based on an existing model) must be clear – indicating that the article was rejected because it does not comply with the journal norms – and mention that the authors should adjust the text to comply with the norms and resubmit it. If it is determined that the text does not have potential for publication, the manuscript is immediately rejected with a brief message signed by the editorial committee. If there is any doubt, the article is sent to members of the editorial committee, who come to serve as guest editors on the ScIELO platform, specifically for articles that were designated to them. When asked to participate in this first step, members of the editorial committee should evaluate the article’s potential for publication. If they believe that the manuscript sent to them does NOT have potential for publication, the members of the editorial committee contacted must issue a brief statement [one paragraph] rejecting the article. If they understand that the text DOES have potential for publication, the guest editors should suggest at least three ad hoc reviewers who have PhDs. The indication should include, whenever possible, an e-mail for contacting the reviewers named. When designated for Step 1 in the Editorial Process the members of the editorial committee should respond to the request within 10 (ten) days.
2. Step to verify plagiarism. Partiicpants: editors and interns If there is a need to reject the article, the editor will undertake the rejection process via the ScIELO system by sending a report to the author. If plagiarism is not found, the executive editor will send the manuscript to the ad hoc reviewers indicated in Step 1.
3. Step of accompaniment. Participants in the step: Executive editor, editors and editorial committee:
4. Step of evaluation and accompaniment. Participants in the step: Executive editor and interns: The executive editor is responsible for: 4.1 Finding the e-mails, completing a registration form, and verifying the curriculum of the designated reviewers and communicating with them. Problems identified by the editorial assistant in relation to the reviewers indicated should be informed to the editors. 4.2 Accompaniment of the evaluation process by the reviewers. 4.2.1 The editorial assistant will accompany the period of response of the reviewers and issue reminders of delays. The editor should be warned after 2 (two) unsuccessful attempts to communicate with the reviewers indicated. 4.2.2 If the reviewers indicated do not agree to conduct the evaluation, the executive editor should request that the reviewers indicate other reviewers who have PhDs. If the executive editor does not have a response within one week, she should inform the editor, who will designate new reviewers, along with the editorial committee. 4.2.3 The editor will be informed when reviews of the article have been received.
5. Final evaluation step. Participants: editor and executive editor:
6. Details of the final evaluation step. Participants: editors; executive editor and BAS 2 intern 6.2 The revised article returned will be sent to the editor who will approve the final version of the manuscript or send it to a second round of evaluation. In this case, the articles will be sent to one of the ad hoc reviewers designated in the first round. Articles that were not returned within 30 days will be rejected with a previous warning to the authors made by the executive editor. 6.3 After approval of the article in the second round, the executive editor should ask the authors if they want to publish the text in English as well, clarifying that the costs of translation, to be done by professionals indicated by the journal, will be paid for by the authors. 6.4 The executive editor will send the abstract and resumen of articles accepted for publication for copyediting by the translators used by the journal. Payments for these services will be handled by the secretary for the Núcleo. 6.5 Articles that are rejected in this final step of the editorial procedures will be archived by the executive editor.
