Brief history
The journal Acta Paulista de Enfermagem was created in 1988 as an electronic technical-scientific publication of Escola Paulista de Enfermagem [EPE; Federal University of São Paulo, UNIFESP; ISSN (electronic version): 1982-0194].
“Acta Paul Enferm” is the abbreviation for Acta Paulista de Enfermagem. This abbreviation must be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references, and bibliographic captions. On this website, Acta Paulista de Enfermagem will be abbreviated as Acta. |
Open Science Compliance
Acta supports practices related to open science policy.
By definition: “Open Science is transparent and accessible knowledge, shared and developed via collaborative networks” (VICENTE-SÁEZ; MARTÍNEZ-FUENTES, 2018, p. 7). “Open Science is the practice of science in a way that other people can collaborate and contribute, and research data, laboratory notes, and other research processes are freely available under terms that allow reuse, redistribute, and reproduce the research and its data and methods” (FOSTER, 2019, p. 10). |
Publication Ethics
Combating Plagiarism
“This nefarious procedure infects research, producing irreparable damage in addition to the illegal practice of appropriating the work of third parties without authorization and due reference.” (National Commission for Institutional Relations and OAB/Ceará Section: 2010.19.07379-01; approved by the Federal Council of the Brazilian Lawyers Association; plenary session: 10/19/2010). All infractions are forms of “intellectual dishonesty”, regardless of ethical or legal issues; they are explained in additional detail below.
Definitions Intentional or unintentional copying of words from another author. Whenever an author uses words from another author, they must be referenced in quotation marks by adding the corresponding citation. Readers of articles published in Acta should know whether the words in the text are from the author or someone else. Copy by the author himself (self-plagiarism). If an author has published an article in journal A, he/she cannot submit the same manuscript to journal B, even with some adjustments. In addition, he/she should not take excerpts from the first article to use in a second manuscript without using quotation marks. Each manuscript must have its writing, even if there is nothing to report on the subject. Inappropriate attribution of data or ideas: most authors report ideas and data from others. However, when an author does this without citing the source, this is a form of plagiarism. Copyright infringement occurs when an author uses (with or without attribution) significant portions of a previously published article (including tables and figures). If this plagiarized “writing” is published, the new editor will be guilty of violating the copyright held by the original editor. This is a legal topic that can be expensive for the publisher and author involved. An author may think that juggling words in a sentence that was copied from one article and pasted into another manuscript is appropriate. This is not appropriate. The ordering of information presented in an article must be original, not following the ordering of a previously published work, even if closely. Acta adopts an awareness and information policy on intellectual property, with specific procedures to prevent plagiarism. The policy aims to inform authors about acceptable writing practices, thus defining a quality standard for publishing peer-reviewed articles. If plagiarism is detected (by reviewers or staff editors, before or after acceptance of the manuscript, during editing, or at any time before publication), the Acta team will alert the author, asking him/her to rewrite it and cite the source. If the plagiarism is extensive (≥25% of the original article), the manuscript will be rejected and the institution where the author works will be notified of the infraction. If plagiarism is detected after publication, Acta's editor-in-chief will notify readers and the institution where the author works about the infringement committed via an Editor's Note. Resources: Plagiarism UNDERSTANDING and CITATION
1. There are several standard guidelines available such as the Uniform Requirements for manuscripts submitted to Biomedical Journals: the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors has published clear guidelines on when citation is required (Available: www.icmje.org). 2. Many renowned journals have published articles or editorials on the growing problem of plagiarism in biomedical publications. Below, some examples are given:
3. The World Association of Medical Editors has published recommendations for medical journals on Ethics publication policies guiding journal editors on what constitutes plagiarism (in addition to other pertinent issues): www.wame.org 4. Acta follows the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors. Academic plagiarism is a crime at any level and violates Brazilian legislation (Penal Code, article 184; law 9.610-98, third paragraph, article 7) that regulates copyright. Thus, plagiarism is a civil and criminal matter. If plagiarism is detected, editorial conduct must follow the guidelines of the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). |

EDITORIAL POLICY
Preprints
Acta accepts manuscripts that have been deposited on a non-commercial preprint server (as long as they have not also been subjected to peer review in another journal). A preprint is a manuscript made available open-access on a website (Preprint Server) before being published in a scientific journal. This is an option for authors to communicate their research quickly and formally (before or in parallel with submission to Acta) for review and publication when manuscripts are approved.
On the Title Page, the author responsible for the submission must inform whether the manuscript is deposited on a preprint server, and provide the corresponding DOI number (which will be published in the manuscript if it is accepted by Acta). Upon submission to Acta, authors will be asked to complete the Open Science Compliance Form. All manuscripts in preprint repositories submitted to Acta will be peer-reviewed. Submitted manuscripts cannot contain references to articles published in non-scientific journals and, then, have not complied with the entire peer review process. Acta accepts articles from the preprint repositories in the areas below (with the corresponding contents): Life Sciences: Animal Behavior, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Cancer Biology, Cellular Biology, Developmental Biology, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Neurosciences, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Physiology, etc. Health Sciences: Allergy and Immunology, Cardiovascular Medicine, Endocrinology, Genetic and Genomic Medicine, Hematology, Infectious Diseases, Neurology, Nutrition, Pathology, Public Health, Rehabilitation Medicine and Physiotherapy, and Toxicology, etc. Journals published by SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online): with an initial focus on publications about COVID-19. Various areas: Arts and Humanities, Business, Education, Law, Medical and Health Sciences, and Social and Life Sciences, etc. Multidisciplinary repository.
Social Sciences: Education, Law, and Social, and Behavioral Sciences.
Psychology: Clinical, Developmental, Cognitive, and Educational Psychology, Neurosciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Quantitative Methods, etc. |
Peer Review
ScholarOne is the Acta platform for online submission. This is a complete workflow management system for scientific journals (submission, peer review, production, and publication); this system offers intelligent information that helps make strategic decisions.
The editorial office receives and checks the documents deposited in the online submission. Non-compliance cases will be returned to the corresponding author for adjustment (deadline: 2 working days after submission). The editorial office will forward manuscripts that meet the instructions to authors to the scientific editor; the first editorial decision may be: to continue the review process, request major revisions, or reject. If the manuscript is current and contributes new knowledge but requires additional revision, it will be returned to the authors with a deadline to submit the revised version (Deadline: ≤7 working days). Manuscripts that will continue in the evaluation process will be forwarded to one of the associated editors on the submission platform. The associate editor will analyze the manuscript and may suggest its rejection to the scientific editor; he can appoint ad hoc consultants in the manuscript area for additional analysis as appropriate. The peer review process depends on the availability of editors and reviewers; thus, the editorial decision may take 30-120 days.
The associate editor receives the analysis from the ad hoc consultants, makes a critical assessment based on the consultants' opinions, and issues his opinion recommending (1) acceptance, (2) corrections, or (3) rejection of the manuscript to the scientific editor. Note: In manuscripts accepted for publication, the name of the Associate Editor who approved the paper and the institutional affiliation and Orcid ID of the authors will be informed. The scientific editor will make the editorial decision and manuscripts recommended for publication by the associate editors will be forwarded for analysis by the technical editor. After the opinion of the technical editor, the scientific editor will make the final editorial decision, forwarding the approved version of the manuscript to the corresponding author and requesting its translation into English (or Portuguese, as the case may be) in 7-20 days (with a certificate issued by the translator). Acta has a team of accredited translators (including nurses) who issue translation certificates. Without this certificate, the manuscript will not be published. Manuscripts accepted for publication are now called articles and then enter editorial production. You can celebrate when your manuscript is accepted and is in the production process! Editorial production includes the stages of receiving the translated article, editing, layout of XML, PDF, and HTML, final reading by the scientific editor, final checking by the technical editor, and sending to the databases. This process must be completed within 45 days. Acta adopts three types of peer review: 1. Double-blind peer review: authors and reviewers do not know each other's identities. 2. Single-blind peer review: authors reveal their identity but reviewers remain anonymous. 3. Open peer review: authors and reviewers know each other's identities. The double-blind type is the standard evaluation type adopted by Acta. In cases of preprint, however, ensuring the authors’ anonymity is not possible; thus, the evaluation can be single-blind or open. The opening of the peer review process depends on the agreement between the associated editors and referees involved. |

Ethics and Misconduct Policy, Errata, and Retraction
Acta's retraction policy follows the principles recommended by COPE. Acta issues errata only to reconsider information related to the methods and results of the published article. Errata will not be issued for adjustments to the title, author name, institutional affiliations, author abbreviation, Orcid ID, acknowledgments, and collaboration sessions. This information must be checked by the authors when they receive both the editorial decision and the attached final PDF of the article. |
Policy on Conflicts of Interest
Conflicts of interest may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have personal interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting the manuscript, authors are responsible for acknowledging and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. If there is still a potential conflict of interest, it must be informed by the author(s) on the title page. For more information, the authors can analyze the following: Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest.
|
Adoption of similarity-checking software
Acta uses the CrossRef Similarity Check (iThenticate).
This software is used on articles accepted for publication. Checking is based on content similarity with previous publications. The analysis is carried out by checking paragraphs and their respective references.
Use of Artificial Intelligence
Aiming to ensure the integrity and reliability of the results and conclusions presented in manuscripts where chatbots (such as Bard, Bing, and ChatGPT) were used and maintain the readers' confidence in the discoveries and advances presented, Acta supports the recommendations of the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME, https://wame.org/page3.php?id=106 ) on the ethical considerations related to the use of these technologies: Transparency: Authors must report the use of artificial intelligence applications and/or assistive technologies in the methods section. Assignment: THE TOOL NAME and/or SERVICE and the REASON for using the tool must be informed. Responsibility: The manuscript will be disregarded for publication if, during similarity analysis, it is found that the author used an artificial intelligence application and it was not informed. Limitations: Authors should include the limitations and potential biases of using chatbots in the discussion of their manuscripts. |
Sex and Gender Issues
Acta's editorial team is attentive to the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (Sex andGenderEquity in Research – SAGER) as well as the authors who publish in Acta. These guidelines guide the reporting of information about sex and gender in study design, results, data analysis, and interpretation of findings. Consistently, Acta observes the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board.

Form and preparation of manuscripts
Authors should carefully read the instructions and consult the Publishing Standards before submitting any manuscript to Acta.
Submitted manuscripts must have the structure below: Title (≤12 words) Abstract (≤250 words) Text from Introduction to Conclusion (≤3000 words; characters are not counted) (Tables, charts, and figures (≤3) References (≤35; in review articles: ≤50). There are no requirements related to font type and size and paragraph spacing, as publishing standards are used. |
Preparing a manuscript for submission
When writing, respecting the spelling and grammatical rules is necessary. Manuscripts that do not respect these rules may be rejected immediately after submission. We suggest that authors forward their manuscripts to one of the indicated professionals for proofreading and editing before the first submission.
Academic plagiarism is a crime (at any level) and violates Brazilian legislation (Penal Code: art. 184; Law 9.610-98: § 3°, art. 7°) that regulates copyright. Thus, plagiarism is a civil and criminal matter. In case of detected plagiarism, the editorial conduct follows the guidelines of the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors (Committee on Publication Ethics, COPE). Submitted manuscripts are the sole responsibility of the authors, regardless of the opinion of Acta editors. Any manuscript submitted to Acta cannot have simultaneously been published or forwarded to another journal; the manuscript will be rejected if this is identified. The veracity of information and bibliographic citations is also the responsibility of the authors. Acta follows the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors. Manuscripts can be submitted to Acta in the Portuguese, English, or Spanish languages. In the case of those written in English or Spanish, their final approved version must also be translated into Portuguese. In the case of manuscripts written in Spanish (or English), the author must provide their translation into Portuguese and English (or Spanish). In this case, the article will be published in all three languages. If the authors of manuscripts written in Portuguese or English wish to publish the approved version also in Spanish, the Editorial Office must be consulted about this and the authors must provide its translation. Manuscripts must be submitted electronically according to the instructions published on the website: http://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/ape-scielo |

However, authors must attach their statement informing that presentation of the ethical proof document is not necessary as it is a review article [File Name ScholarOne Manuscripts: CEP or CONEP Approval]; c) Invoice of payment of the adequacy and compliance fee (File Name ScholarOne Manuscripts: Payment voucher); d) Attach the tax invoice related to the adequacy and compliance fee. The tax invoice must be requested at the link https://acta-ape.org/taxas-de-publicacao/; authors must click on Electronic Tax Invoice, fill out the form, and wait for contact from the Editorial Office (File Name ScholarOne Manuscripts: Payment voucher); e) Manuscript (see Main Document below) (File Name ScholarOne Manuscripts: Main document); f) Title Page (File Name ScholarOne Manuscripts: Title Page); g) Open Science Compliance Form (Template: File Name ScholarOne Manuscripts: Copyright letter); h) For the clinical trials below, authors must attach the corresponding checklist: randomized clinical trial (CONSORT); observational study in epidemiology (STROBE); qualitative study (COREQ); scope review [JBI Scoping Review Network Template for Scoping Review (File Name ScholarOne Manuscripts: Title Page)], and systematic review and meta-analysis (PRISMA).
2. Title Page must contain:
1. Conception and design or analysis and interpretation of data; 2. Writing of the manuscript or critical review of relevant intellectual content; 3. Final approval of the version to be published. These three conditions must be fully met;
3. Abstract The abstract is an abbreviated presentation of a study. Its purpose is to facilitate communication with readers. It should provide the context or basis of the study, basic procedures, main results, and conclusions, emphasizing new and important aspects of the study. This is the most read part of the article after the title. The abstract must be written in the same language as the manuscript with ≤250 words and structured as follows:
4. References References to printed and/or electronic documents must follow the Vancouver Style, as developed by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (www.icmje.org). References must be aligned to the left margin. Periodical titles must be abbreviated according to the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus and International Nursing Index. References contribute to convincing readers about the validity of the facts and arguments presented. They give credibility to the report when appropriately chosen. Therefore, only references from scientific journals indexed in international databases (which were fully consulted by the authors and have a direct and relevant relationship with the manuscript subject) should be cited. In the list of references, studies such as theses, dissertations, course conclusion works, handouts, annals, etc. should not be included. They cannot be retrieved in the original by readers, have not been published in scientific journals, and did not fully comply with the peer review process, thus having a reduced scientific expression. The currentness of references must be considered as the citation of recent works (less than five years) is essential in original articles.
