BJT encourages authors to share their data in trusted repositories such as Dryad, FigshareZenodoMendeley DataOSF e SciELO Data.

Ethics in publication

The Brazilian Journal of Transplantation (BJT) is committed to high standards of ethical behavior in management and editorial practices, with emphasis on the relationship with authors and, mainly, on the evaluation of their manuscripts under the procedures established by international institutions such as Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing, recommended by Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), pelo Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ),  Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA) and World Association of Medical Editors (WAME)Código de Boas Práticas Científicas, Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP); e Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication, da Biblioteca Eletrônica Científica Online (SciELO).

The BJT makes explicit the guidelines for authors, editors and reviewers to act ethically and responsibly:

Authors: When submitting manuscripts, authors undertake to respect scientific integrity, strictly observing the criteria for attribution of authorship and informing the individual contributions of each of the authors. They must also declare all potential conflicts of interest about the submitted article and inform about previous publications, presentation of the work, academic affiliations and sources of financing. Authors must undertake to cite and give the correct reference to all articles, data and other documents mentioned in the article. The submitting author assumes, on behalf of all authors of the manuscript, responsibility for the integrity of the research and content of the manuscript, as well as making corrections or retractions, if necessary. Whenever applicable, the certificate from the ethical committees approving the research must be presented at the time of submission.

Editors: they are committed to adopting and ensuring editorial neutrality and impartiality and that published manuscripts comply with internationally established ethical recommendations. They must check whether the Ethics Committees approve the research, requiring certificates if they have not been presented. Editors, when assigned to manage the manuscript evaluation process, must adopt measures to identify and prevent works that present research misconduct from being published. They also undertake to deal appropriately with formal allegations of scientific misconduct and to seek constant improvement of the journal and its content, including the publication of corrections and retractions, as well as clarifications and apologies, whenever necessary. Editors must declare potential conflicts of interest in evaluating manuscripts and prevent conflicts of interest involving authors and reviewers from compromising ethical standards in publication.

Reviewers: When designated, only those who are able and available to prepare the opinion with the greatest possible scientific rigor and within the defined deadline should accept the invitation for review and who do not present conflicts of interest that could influence their evaluation or recommendation. Reviewers who accept to participate in the evaluation process are committed to evaluating the work following the best academic practices and scientific integrity and pointing out practices of scientific misconduct when identified. They also undertake to maintain the confidentiality of the documents they receive and the process during the evaluation

Therefore, to ensure ethics in publication, submissions must meet the requirements:

Original content and duplicate publication: BJT only publishes original content. Authors confirm submission of original content in the Terms and Conditions at the time of submission. Manuscripts submitted to the journal must not have previously been published in another journal or be under consideration for publication elsewhere, in whole or in part.

Fabrication and Falsification: BJT opposes the fabrication of data or images or practices of falsification (i.e., the intentional misrepresentation or deceptive manipulation of data).

Plagiarism: Plagiarism occurs when an author attempts to present previously published work as original content. BJT uses the Similarity Check system, which allows the detection of similarities in submitted manuscripts.

In cases where misconduct is identified, the BJT editorial board will take the necessary measures following international recommendations (COPE) and publish a retraction. Research misconduct does not include honest mistakes or differences of opinion.

Concepts, ideas or opinions expressed in the manuscripts, as well as the origin and accuracy of the quotations contained therein, are the sole responsibility of the author(s).

Ethical principles

When reporting experiments on human beings, authors must indicate whether the procedures followed were approved by the institutional Research Ethics Committee, respecting Resolution 466/2012 of the National Health Council. Foreign articles must comply with the 1975 Declaration of Helsinki, revised in 2013.

When reporting experiments with animals, authors must present the process number approved by the institutional Ethics Committee for the Use of Animals (CEUA), following Federal Law nº 11,794/08 (Arouca Law) which regulates item VII of § 1 of the art. 225 of the Federal Constitution, which establishes procedures for the scientific use of animals.

Articles from abroad must follow the international standards of the Council for International Organization of Medical Sciences (CIOMS).

The CAAE and/or CEUA numbers must be incorporated into the article in its final version.

In case of doubt as to whether the research was carried out following current legislation, the authors must explain the reason for their approach and demonstrate that the institutional ethics committee expressly approved the doubtful aspects of the study.

Informed consent

Patients mentioned in articles have the right to privacy, which must not be violated without informed consent. Identification information, including patient names, as well as initials or hospital numbers, should not be published in descriptions, photographs and genealogies unless such information proves to be essential for scientific purposes, in which case the Free and Consent Form (Informed Consent Form - ICF) from the research participant (or their guardians) is required for publication.

Another way to maintain anonymity is to mask the eye region in patient photographs. In this case, authors must ensure that changes do not distort the scientific meaning.

Once the information from the TCLE has been obtained, it must be included in the published article.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

The Brazilian Journal of Transplantation (BJT) accepts the publication of preprint articles, accelerating the communication of research results and allowing the author to receive feedback on the work from readers and make any pertinent modifications, as an example SciELO Preprints or EmeRI.

A preprint is a manuscript ready for submission to a journal, which is deposited on trusted preprint servers before or in parallel with submission to a journal.

The author can use the preprint, and it is assumed that when submitting the article to the journal through the Open Science Compliance Form, the name of the Preprint server and the DOI of the Preprint will be informed.

Articles submitted to preprints share the originality of the publication with journals. The evaluation process will not be double anonymized in this case, as the authorship will be known.

Peer review process

The Brazilian Journal of Transplantation (BJT) is guided by double anonymized peer review, ensuring the anonymity of authors and reviewers during the evaluation process. However, progressively seeking alignment with the best practices of open science, as of 2021, the journal began accepting manuscripts submitted previously or in parallel to preprint platforms. In these cases, authorship is public, and then open peer review will be adopted in simple anonymized mode, preserving the identity of the reviewers, or open with reviewers' consent.

The publication of an article deposited as a preprint will be considered unpublished and will present its own DOI, referencing the DOI previously registered on the preprint platform. Likewise, authors will be encouraged to deposit and share the data, codes and/or methods used in the production of the manuscript in repositories, with the responsible author being responsible for informing the deposit location to allow reviewers  and editors access, whenever necessary. However, the content of the material sent for evaluation cannot have been previously published or simultaneously submitted to other journals.

To select manuscripts, originality, relevance of topics and quality of scientific methodology are assessed, as well as compliance with editorial standards adopted by the journal. Submission of manuscripts that do not comply with the format described in this document may result in the manuscript being returned. All BJT content is subject to peer review.

The editorial secretariat will receive manuscripts and initially check them for similarity in content (plagiarism) with other texts available on the Web using the Similarity Check/iThenticate system. In case of plagiarism detection, BJT will follow the guidelines of COPE's “Code of Conduct and Good Practices: Guidelines for Journal Editors.”

A section editor (SE) will be appointed for manuscripts that present little or no similarity in content. The SE will appoint two to four external reviewers (ad hoc referees) in a double anonymized mode.

Reviewers must not present a conflict of interest and be committed to fair judgment. Your conclusions must be objective, pointing out relevant articles that have not been cited. Reviewers must also treat articles confidentially. A conflict of interest is considered to exist when an author (or the institution with which the author is affiliated), evaluator or editor has financial or personal relationships capable of influencing their actions, relationships whose potential may vary from insignificant to large in terms of influence judgment. Not all relationships, however, represent a true conflict of interest, which depends on whether the individual believes the relationship affects their scientific judgment. Financial relationships (such as employment, consultancies, stock ownership, and paid expert testimony) are the most easily identifiable conflicts of interest. Still, conflicts may occur for other reasons, such as personal relationships, academic competition, and intellectual passion.

After receiving the evaluations, the SE will decide on the manuscript under the reviewers' recommendations, being able to accept it in the form in which it was submitted, reject it or request revisions. The manuscript that requires revision will be sent to the author, who must submit a new version and a letter to the SE, in which he must comment on each reviewer's recommendation. Additional and/or amended paragraphs must be highlighted in the text. If the author does not agree with the evaluator's suggestions, it is necessary to explain the reasons. After verifying that the new version adheres to the recommendations, the SE must make the final decision or, exceptionally, forward it to another round of evaluation if the changes have not been sufficiently addressed.

Authors can access the entire process anytime through the journal's online management system. If they do not agree with the final decision, they can appeal it by emailing the Editor-in-Chief, who will review the process and may reconsider if necessary. The published article identifies the name of the ES conducting the evaluation process.

Recognition of reviewers

The Brazilian Journal of Transplantation recognizes reviewers' contributions through the ReviewerCredits Plugin. Those who request it are issued a specific certificate. The updated list of reviewers is published on the journal's website annually.

Open data

Authors will be encouraged, whenever applicable, to deposit and share the data, codes and/or methods used in the production of the manuscript, with the responsible author being responsible for informing, during the submission process, the chosen repository, enabling access to reviewers and editors, unless this is not possible for ethical, privacy or confidentiality reasons. To ensure full transparency of the data obtained, BJT requires authors to declare that data is not available in public repositories, it is available upon request. In this case, the authors must inform why these data are not publicly available. Alternatively, authors may make the data available as a supplementary file to the manuscript. This should be stated if data sharing does not apply to the article because no datasets were generated or analyzed during the current study. Research data includes, but is not limited to, raw data, processed data, spreadsheets, statistics, laboratory notebooks, field notebooks, questionnaires, photographs, methodologies, standards and protocols. Authors can use their institution's data repository or choose a repository at re3data.org or SciELO_lista recommended repositories. Other options are Dryad, FigshareZenodoMendeley DataOSF and SciELO Data.

Fees

The Brazilian Journal of Transplantation (BJT) does not charge submission, translation and/or processing fees.

Ethics and misconduct, correction and retraction policy

The Brazilian Journal of Transplantation (BJT) is committed to high standards of ethical behavior at all stages of the publication process following procedures established by international institutions, such as: Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing, recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), and Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), for the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA) and World Association of Medical Editors (WAME)Código de Boas Práticas Científicas, for the The São Paulo Research Foundation, FAPESP (FAPESP); e Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication, da Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). Published articles that contain seriously flawed data such that their findings and conclusions cannot be trusted may be retracted to correct the scientific record. Additions, corrections and retractions may be requested by the author(s) or initiated by the editors-in-chief after discussion with the corresponding author. Readers who discover material errors in the work of others should contact the corresponding author of that work. All additions, corrections and retractions are subject to approval by the editors-in-chief, but corrections and minor additions will not be published. The corresponding author must obtain approval from all article co-authors before requesting/submitting additions, corrections and retractions or provide evidence that such approval was requested. Additions, corrections and retractions will contain information about the original article's title, the list of authors and the reason for the retraction. The originally published article will remain on the web except in extraordinary circumstances.

Policy on conflict of interest

The conflict of interest may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic or financial nature. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting the manuscript, authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, the author(s) must inform it in a signed document attached to the submission platform. For more information: Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest.

Adoption of similarity software

The Brazilian Journal of Transplantation (BJT) uses the Similarity Check system, which allows the detection of similarities in submitted manuscripts.

In cases where misconduct is identified, the BJT editorial board will take the necessary measures following international recommendations (COPE) and publish a retraction. Research misconduct does not include honest mistakes or differences of opinion.

Sex and gender issues

The Brazilian Journal of Transplantation (BJT) editorial team is committed to promoting the principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) among authors, reviewers and readers, recognizing their importance throughout scientific communication.

Among the actions aimed at promoting the DEIA principles at BJT, the following stand out: consideration of the diversity of sex, gender, race and geographic origin in the composition of the Editorial Board and in the selection of reviewers; adherence to the Guidelines on sex and gender equity in research (SAGER); correct use of DEIA terminology and inclusive language in published articles; encouraging the publication of articles related to DEIA principles that fall within the scope of the BJT; strengthening an inclusive environment for the development of all actors involved in the publication of the BJT, so that they contribute to the advancement of these principles in the scientific community in the area of transplantation.
