Open-access Effect of accelerated carbonation on the properties of wood cement panels from the species Erythrina poeppigiana

Efeito da carbonatação acelerada nas propriedades de painéis cimento madeira da espécie Erythrina poeppigiana

Abstract

Wood particles are an alternative to the reinforcement of wood-cement panels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of Erythrina poeppigianawood in the production of wood-cement panels with accelerated carbonation. Wood particles were treated with hot water. Hot water treatment reduced the extractive content by 60% and improved the interaction of particles with the cement, reducing the porosity of the cement-wood panels. Accelerated carbonation reduced water absorption by 52% and swelling in thickness by 76%. The carbonated panels showed an increase of 29 and 38% in flexural MOR and MOE values, respectively. An increase in the compression and internal bonding values of the carbonated panels was also observed. It is technically feasible to use the wood of Erythrina poeppigianafor the production of wood-cement panels, valuing the destination of the forest species.
