ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Brief Background

The journal Trends in Computational and Applied Mathematics publishes complete original works that present innovative applications and/or make relevant contributions to Computational and Applied Mathematics. The journal was established in 1999, with the name TEMA - Tendências em Matemática Aplicada e Computacional, as an initiative of the Brazilian Society of Computational and Applied Mathematics – SBMAC. Initially, its purpose was to serve as proceedings for the National Congress of Computational and Applied Mathematics (CNMAC). At that time, the creation of the TEMA series fulfilled a desire of the scientific community to expand the dissemination of the research presented at CNMAC. Later, starting in 2006, with the growing demand for the publication of original articles from the Brazilian scientific community, the journal began to accept articles continuously, which allowed for the expansion of the scope of this important publication. In 2011, the journal was indexed in the SciELO collection, publishing three issues annually until 2020. In 2021, the journal was renamed Trends in Computational and Applied Mathematics (TCAM), increasing the publication frequency to four issues per year, aiming for greater inclusion in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. In 2024, the journal adopted a continuous publication policy, eliminating page numbers and issues and adopting international standards for referencing published articles.

Mission

The mission of the journal Trends in Computational and Applied Mathematics is to publish high-quality scientific work in the different sub-areas of Mathematics and its applications, focusing on the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America, especially in Brazil, under the coordination of the Brazilian Society of Computational and Applied Mathematics (SBMAC).

To facilitate the contribution of high-quality scientific studies to academic publishing, TCAM journal follows a rigorous peer review procedure and defined ethical principles and standards. When we become aware of ethical difficulties, we are committed to investigating and taking the necessary steps to protect the integrity of the literature and the safety of research participants. Manuscripts must follow the editorial and ethical criteria established on this page and in the Guidelines for Authors.

Principles

  • Prevention: early detection and flagging of potential ethical concerns through automated assessments and manuscript peer review manuals.
  • Neutrality: being fair and objective, making judgments to correct the literature when necessary.
  • Transparency: Where possible and appropriate, inform all parties and give them time to respond.
  • Consistency: Ensure that appropriate processes are followed for investigating concerns and applicability of policies and that COPE principles and flowcharts are adhered to.

Ethical Guidelines for Authors

Authors submitting manuscripts to TCAM must ensure they are ethically sound and meet industry-recognized standards as listed in TCAM policies.

Authors who submit their manuscripts to TCAM must:

  • Present the results of your research accurately and give an objective assessment of their importance.
  • Maintain accurate authorship by only including those eligible for authorship and explicitly describing their contribution.
  • At the time of submission, disclose any information that could be interpreted as a potential conflict of interest.
  • Present your data and techniques accurately. The data and methods used in the study must be described in sufficient detail in the publication so that other researchers can repeat your work. Raw data must be made public unless there is a strong reason otherwise (for example, if there is a confidentiality agreement).
  • Be aware that the simultaneous submission of articles to several journals is not authorized.
  • Original research results must be unique and unpublished.
  • Obtain permission from the copyright owners to publish any previously published content (including quotes, figures, or tables).
  • Immediately report any errors or inaccuracies discovered after publication.

This is not a complete list; Authors must know local rules and acceptable academic publishing practices.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

The journal Trends in Computational and Applied Mathematics accepts publication of preprints in public and reliable databases such as SciELO Preprints and ArXiv. The publication link and the database where the preprint was published must be informed upon submitting the manuscript. Other bases will be analyzed on a case-by-case basis by the Editor-in-Chief.

Peer review process

The evaluation process consists of three steps, namely:

1. Preliminary analysis by the editors to verify: adherence to the general instructions defined by the editorial policy; the focus and scope of the journal, the relevance and contribution of the text, and similarity analysis of all submitted documents using the Turnitin platform. Research involving animals and humans must include ethics committee certificates issued by their research institution upon submission. In case of doubts about the documentation provided, the journal may reject the article. Articles that do not meet the criteria will be returned to the authors for corrections as many times as necessary. If the works are deemed inadequate or do not comply with the journal's standards, they may be rejected based on the evaluation; otherwise, they will be sent for peer review.

2. Forwarding to reviewers: The article that complies with the standards will be submitted for merit and scientific method evaluation by at least two ad hoc reviewers from institutions other than that of the authors. In line with open science practices, the journal offers authors and reviewers options for an open peer review process, with or without identification of their names. Authorization for the disclosure of names can be provided by the authors at the time of article submission and by the reviewers when completing the Open Science Compliance Statement. In the event of the publication of the reviews that supported the decision to publish the article, they may be edited by the journal's editorial board. Reviewers will recommend through the TCAM portal one of the following options:

  • Accept
  • Revisions required
  • Rejection

After analyzing the reviewer reports, the editors forward the decision to the authors. If the decision is "revisions required," the article is returned to the authors for correction, modification, adjustment, and/or justification according to the reviewers' comments. The revised manuscript should be submitted to the TCAM portal by the same author who submitted the original manuscript. The revised version of an article should be resubmitted along with a cover letter explaining each change requested by the reviewers. Suggestions that are not accepted should be properly justified. Changes must be highlighted in the text. Care should be taken to maintain the confidentiality of the authors' identity. Editors evaluate the revised article and cover letter and will forward them to the reviewers when needed. In the event of rejection of the article by one of the two reviewers, the editors will decide whether to send it for evaluation by a third reviewer. Editors are responsible for the final decision regarding the acceptance or rejection of articles.

3. The corrected article is then resubmitted to the reviewers for further analysis. Upon approval, the article is forwarded for typesetting. The final proofs of the articles are sent to the corresponding author in PDF format for final approval. If necessary, the author has 72 hours to correct and return the revised original. If there is no response to the proof within 72 hours, the Editor-in-Chief considers the unchanged version final, and significant modifications are no longer allowed. Only minor changes, such as spelling corrections and verification of illustrations, are accepted. Extensive modifications necessitate reevaluation by the reviewers and may result in delays in the publication of the article.

Open data

The journal Trends in Computational and Applied Mathematics recommends that all research data be public in repositories at the time of submission or made public when the article is published. If authors choose to keep research data closed, it will be necessary to justify when submitting the manuscript, which will be analyzed by the Editor-in-Chief. It is also recommended that data repositories from institutions to which one of the authors is linked, or other reliable data repositories be preferably used.

Fees

The journal Trends in Computational and Applied Mathematics does not charge submission, article processing (APC), or publication fees.

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

Submission of a manuscript implies that the work described has not been published previously (except as an abstract, published lecture, or academic thesis). The article will first be assessed for compliance with the journal's standards and analyzed using plagiarism detection software by the technical team.

Corrections and Retractions

Authors are expected to carefully consider the list and sequence of authors before submitting their manuscript. The final list of authors should be provided at the time of submission. No addition or change of authorship will be allowed during the evaluation stage or after acceptance of the submitted text.

The already published article in which misconduct is identified remains indexed in the journal's database under retracted status. Retraction documents the reason for the retraction duly referenced upon communication from the author, editor, or other authorized agent and published in the same journal. Retraction may be partial when misconduct applies to a specific part of the article without compromising the entirety of the published research.

The procedure for registering the retraction of an article published by Trends in Computational and Applied Mathematics is initiated upon receipt of formal communication by email to the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, who will inform SciELO. The communication must accompany the retraction text stating the reasons for the article's retraction.

The article cannot be "unpublished". Cases of errors or flaws, regardless of nature or origin, that do not constitute misconduct are corrected through errata. The journal will publish errata, corrections, or retractions as soon as possible.

Any addition and modification to the submitted text must be made only before the manuscript is accepted and only if approved by the Editor-in-Chief of the journal. The Editor will only consider additions and modifications to the text under exceptional circumstances after the manuscript is accepted. While the Editor considers the request, the publication of the manuscript will be suspended.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

Authors:

Authors are obliged to disclose any potential conflict of interest. The conflict of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting the manuscript, authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, the author(s) must inform it in a signed document attached to the submission platform. Authors must identify in the manuscript all financial support obtained and other personal connections related to the work.

Editors and reviewers:

The reviewer must inform the editors of any conflicts of interest that could influence the analysis of the manuscript and must declare that he or she is not qualified to review it. Reviewers must consider any type of conflict of interest before evaluating the manuscript. Working relationships with the author(s) must be considered (e.g., participating or having participated in a research project; maintaining or having maintained scientific collaboration with research groups; having a mentoring relationship with the author; having a financial interest with the project involved in the manuscript, be related to the author(s)). Like reviewers, editors should avoid making decisions about manuscripts that conflict with their interests, such as those submitted by authors in their department, research collaborators, or relatives.

Adoption of similarity software

TCAM Journal considers plagiarism practice unacceptable. The journal uses Turnitin software to verify the originality of the article before sending it to reviewers. When plagiarism is detected, the authors are informed, and a report generated by the plagiarism detection software is presented. If there is any doubt or question, the Editor-in-Chief will contact the corresponding author and, if necessary, all authors. If duplication is confirmed, the institutions of affiliation of the authors or funding involved in the research development are contacted, and the article is rejected for publication.

Gender and Sex Issues

The editorial team of Trends in Computational and Applied Mathematics and the authors who publish in the journal must always adhere to the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that direct the reporting of information about sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and the results and interpretation of findings. Additionally, Trends in Computational and Applied Mathematics observes a gender equity policy in its editorial board.

Ethics Committee

The journal pays strict attention to ethical standards when researching animals and humans. Certificates from animal and human ethics committees are required in the submission process. In case of doubt about the documentation presented, the journal may reject the article.

Copyright

Authors of articles published in the journal Trends in Computational and Applied Mathematics retain the copyright of their work. The journal uses Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) in published articles. The authors grant the TCAM  journal the right to first publish the article.

Intellectual Property and Terms of Use

The content of the articles is the exclusive responsibility of the authors. The journal uses Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) in published articles. This license allows published articles to be reused without permission for any purpose as long as the original work is correctly cited.

The journal encourages Authors to self-archive their accepted manuscripts, publishing them on personal blogs, institutional repositories, and social media, as long as the full citation is included in the journal's website version.

Use of artificial intelligence

Despite being a relevant research area of interest to Trends in Computational and Applied Mathematics, the use of artificial intelligence tools for manuscript preparation submitted to the journal must be regulated.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and Language Models (LM) cannot be listed as authors in any academic work published by Trends in Computational and Applied Mathematics.

Artificial intelligence tools may be used by authors in cases not related to ethical issues, such as responsibility for the article and the presence or absence of a conflict of interest.

Texts obtained through AI may include biases, distortions, irrelevancies, misrepresentations, and plagiarism, many of which are caused by the algorithms governing their generation and largely depend on the content of the materials used in forming the questions.

The following activities will be considered valid for the use of artificial intelligence in preparing manuscripts submitted to TCAM:

  • Language assistance for the article. When AI tools are used to paraphrase or refine the author's original content, rather than suggesting new content, they become similar to tools like Grammarly, spell checkers, dictionaries, and thesauruses. Texts translated by artificial intelligence will not be accepted.
  • Literature search: Generative text models can be used as search assistants to identify relevant literature. The usual requirements apply to the accuracy of citations and the thoroughness of bibliographic reviews; caution must be exercised regarding potential biases in suggested citations. Authors are responsible for selecting and critically analyzing research conducted by AI.
  • Authors who use AI tools in manuscript writing, image or graphic element production, or data compilation and analysis must explicitly state in the Materials and Methods section of the article how the AI tool was used and which tool was used.
  • Authors are responsible for their research articles' accuracy, integrity, and originality, including any use of AI.
  • The use of AI must not violate the plagiarism policy of Trends in Computational and Applied Mathematics. Academic works must be authored by the author and should not present ideas, data, words, or other materials from third parties without proper citation and transparent reference.
