A brief history
Tempo - the journal of the UFF History Department, created in 1996 on the initiative of the History Department and the Graduate Program in History, both of the UFF History Institute, is a periodical aimed at disseminating and discussing research in the field of History. Over the years, the journal has established itself as an important forum for debating history in its various forms - social, economic, political, ideas, among others - and has fulfilled its aim of becoming a channel for publishing innovative scientific research by historians in Brazil and abroad. |
Compliance with Open Science
Tempo's editors closely follow the debates on Open Science, especially in the editors' forum of the National History Association (ANPUH), recognizing the particularities of Human Sciences journals in Brazil. In this sense, it has sought to adopt the practices of Open Science, making transparent management in the editing of each issue and in the treatment of research data. Since the last issue in 2024, the journal has gradually opened up the process of evaluating manuscripts, allowing referees to be identified with their consent in articles approved for publication. Likewise, authors must include references to websites that provide digital copies of documents in archives, libraries, repositories, theses and online articles cited in the manuscript. Exceptions are allowed in cases of legal and ethical issues. In addition, by submitting the article to Tempo, the author also undertakes to make the data analyzed in the article available upon direct request. Articles submitted for publication must be unpublished and not have been previously published in print or electronic formats, except for those made available in preprint repositories. In this case, at the time of submission, the responsible author must complete and attach the Open Science Compliance Form and send it to the editors-in-chief. Simultaneous submission for evaluation in another journal is not permitted. This journal follows the Gold Open Access model. |
Ethics in Publishing
Articles submitted to Tempo are identified when they are approved by the evaluators and vice versa. Editors-in-chief may not submit articles to the journal during their tenure, with the exception of interviews. All cases of doubt are assessed jointly with the associate editors, and changes to the rules are made in consultation with the editorial board. |
Focus and Scope
Tempo functions as an instrument in tune with the identity of the Fluminense Federal University History Institute (IHT-UFF). Its editorial orientation dialogues with the fields of interest of its professors, researchers, students and lines of research which, thanks to the work of the editors, advisors and technical team, are converted into content for reading and analysis. A careful editorial production process ensures the excellence of the quality of what is published in the journal. Tempo publishes articles (free and in dossiers), reviews and interviews, covering a wide range of historical themes with different temporal and spatial approaches. However, it does not publish articles on the history of education. Contributions must be original, not yet published and/or under evaluation in other journals. Since 2016 Tempo has been published three times a year, and from 2024 onwards in a continuous flow system. The themes of the dossiers are chosen after the launch of a public and universal call for proposals, by an external committee formed exclusively for this purpose, every two years. The dossiers should preferably be proposed by one Brazilian and one foreign researcher. The articles that should make up the respective approved dossiers are also selected through a public call and evaluated by ad hoc experts (peer review), just like the free articles that make up the journal. |

Preprints
Tempo accepts manuscripts previously deposited on a recognized preprint server. As it is a recognized author, the evaluation will not follow the anonymity of the author. The information that the manuscript has been previously published in this format should appear in the first note of the text in the final version for publication, including the DOI of the preprint. |
Peer Review Process
All manuscripts undergo the same publication process. In the first stage, carried out in our online submission system, the editor will analyze the article's suitability to Tempo's mission, compliance with the rules and the work's potential for innovation. The editors can reject the work in this first phase. In the second phase, the papers are submitted to the peer review system according to the table below. PEER REVIEW SYSTEM
Each published article identifies the reviewers, with their consent. Reviews and interviews are also submitted to the online system but are analyzed by the editors and editorial board. Tempo aims to be published every four months, with issues usually being completed in April, August and December. As soon as the texts for a section are ready in the editorial process, they are published online in a continuous flow system. The issues usually feature the following sections, in this order:
1 - Article (with free articles); |
Open Data
Authors of articles and reviews in Tempo should make it clear where they can find digital copies of old manuscripts and printed materials, theses and dissertations in institutional repositories and online articles. To do this, they must include the access link and the date of consultation, in order to clarify their relationship with the source and make it easier for the reader to consult it. As stated in the Open Science Compliance section, the author undertakes to provide the data analyzed in the article on request. In this case, the repositories where the data and information can be found must be cited in the text in accordance with the Guidelines for research data citation (portuguese only). |
Collection of Fees
Tempo is an open access journal. There is no fee for submitting and evaluating articles. |
Ethics and Misconduct Policy, Errata and Retraction
Tempo is committed to following good editorial practices, respecting the guidelines of scientific ethics that dictate historical research. Unethical behavior, including plagiarism and falsification of data, is not tolerated. At the time of submission, the author must ensure that all ethical guidelines have been followed, inform the sources of funding and, where applicable, declare the approval of ethics committees. Compliance with good ethical practices is the sole responsibility of the author. Articles will be evaluated without discrimination on the grounds of gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, nationality or political stance, provided that national and international human rights documents are respected. As far as authorship is concerned, all those who contributed to the design, development and analysis of the data must be identified as co-authors, and all of them must have a doctorate at the time of submission and be responsible for the content of the article. If errors are identified after publication, the author undertakes to inform the editors of Tempo as soon as possible so that errata can be issued in one of the next issues of the journal. In cases of misconduct, such as plagiarism, self-plagiarism or republication of manuscripts, detected after publication, the author will be subject to editorial sanctions, including retraction of the article. In addition, if they wish, the plagiarized author can send a response in the form of an article to be published in one of the subsequent issues. Tempo follows the ethical principles established in SciELO's Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication, the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA). For research carried out in virtual environments, we have adopted the document from the National Commission for Research Ethics (CONEP) as a reference and, for international researchers, we recommend consulting equivalent documents in their countries or contacting the journal's editors directly. |
Conflict of Interest Policy
Conflicts of interest can be of a personal, commercial, political, academic or financial nature. Conflicts of interest can occur when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting the manuscript, authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, the author(s) must disclose this in a signed document attached to the submission platform. For more information: Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest. |
Adoption of similarity checking software
Tempo uses the following similarity checking software: CopySpider; Plagiarism Checker. Articles are checked by the editors as soon as they are submitted. In situations where there is little similarity with excerpts from the authors' own work (including theses and dissertations) or that of others, the authors are contacted to reformulate the submission. In cases of great similarity, the submission is rejected. The journal publishes scientific articles after evaluation by two academic referees who are experts in the field. Among the criteria used for approval or rejection of the text is the novelty of the work. Many postgraduate programs make their doctoral theses and master's dissertations available to the public for online consultation. Articles on topics related to the author's master's or doctoral studies will only be accepted if they add significantly to the work by dealing with unpublished sources not explored in the thesis or dissertation, or if they include a dialog with recent bibliography, demonstrating a change or evolution in the conclusions previously drawn. In these cases, the information must be included in a message to the editors, together with the article sent for evaluation. |
Adoption of software using Artificial Intelligence resources
Authors who use generative artificial intelligence (generative AI) must describe its use when submitting the article, justify it and detail how and where it was applied in the manuscript itself. If the article is approved, authors must also detail the use of generative AI in the final version, including specifications such as the name, version of the tool and date of consultation. This information will be included in the article's initial note, along with acknowledgments or descriptions of research projects. |
Sex and Gender Issues
Tempo's editorial team, as well as the authors who publish in the journal, must comply with the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines. The SAGER guidelines guide the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, results and interpretation of findings. In addition, Tempo observes a gender equity policy in the training of its editorial board. |
Ethics Committee
In the case of controversial topics, authors must attach a statement of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the research. |
Copyright
Authors of articles published by Tempo retain the copyright of their work, licensing it under the Creative Commons Attribution CC BY 4.0 license, which allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, as long as the original work is correctly cited, with the authors granting Tempo the right of first publication. |

Types of documents accepted
The journal publishes original articles (single articles and dossiers), reviews and interviews in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French. Tempo is not responsible for reviewing manuscripts submitted in a foreign language. Single articles can deal with different themes, based on theoretical and historiographical research and/or primary sources. Articles in dossiers refer to the analysis of a specific topic proposed by specialists, the organizers of the dossiers. To submit articles to the journal, all authors must have a doctorate. Authors must provide their ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) number when submitting their article. Registration and information at https://orcid.org/signin. Each author may only have one article under evaluation. There will also be a two-year interval between publication and the start of a new submission process. All approved papers will receive their Digital Object Identifier (DOI) when they are finally published in the journal Tempo. |
Authors' Contribution
In the case of articles with multiple authors, the authors should specify in a message to the editors the individual contributions of each author in the preparation of the text, where possible. If necessary, the published article will explain the different contributions of the authors according to the CRediT - Contributor Roles Taxonomy. |
Preparation of the manuscript
To make the blind evaluation possible, manuscripts must not have author identification on the front page, in the text or in the notes. All contributions must use the Microsoft Word text editor or compatible editors (Times New Roman, type 12 and space 1.5). Articles that do not comply strictly with the rules will be rejected. Articles must have:
On critical reviews: Critical reviews should put the work analyzed into dialogue with the relevant historiography, stimulating academic debate through their publication. They must provide new insights and knowledge and not simply summarize the work. They should refer to national books published in the same year or the year before submission, or foreign books published in the last three years. Authors of reviews should avoid situations that could be characterized as a conflict of interest. Reviews must have:
Interviews must take place:
