Instructions to authors

Scope and policy

SOCIEDADE & NATUREZA is a journal devoted to publishing original scientific papers focusing on Geography and its related areas. It aims at encouraging the exchange of experience in its specialty with other institutions, national or foreign, which maintain similar publications, and defending and respecting the principles of pluralism of philosophical, political and scientific ideas.

Public of the journal: Professors, researchers, students of geography and similar areas.

All articles are reviewed by at least two specialists chosen by the editors. The evaluation is based on originality, importance in the context of the theme,; adequacy of the theoretical basis and methodology, clarity in exposing the subject, relevance of results, correct writing and quality of graphic illustrations.

Submissions in Portuguese and Spanish must also provide an English version of the manuscript after acceptance. Translations must attend to the journal's requirements and the high standards of scientific writing. For that reason, authors whose native language is not English must provide a translation/language-checking certificate attesting the writing adequacy of the translated version.

Sociedade & Natureza is a journal supporting and executing Open Science, to assure transparency and reliability to all the articles we publish. Therefore, authors are invited to deposit their submissions in reliable preprint servers. Authors who wish to deposit their articles previously as preprints should contact the editors prior to submission for further information about the process and to sign the Consent Form.

Authors hold the copyrights for articles published in this journal. The journal has the rights for first publication. As they appear in a publicly accessible journal, the articles are free to use, with their own attributions, in educational applications.

Form and preparations of manuscripts

Original empirical, experimental or conceptual articles will be accepted for publication in the Sociedade & Natureza. We expect to recieve articles resulting from master, doctorate or similar density research, on subject specific to Geographic Science.

Preparing the article for submission

Authors are entirely responsible for following all the instructions below. Articles that do not comply to the instructions will be rejected during pre-review.

  • Articles must be submitted in Word format, 12 MB maximum file size, between 4000 and 6000 words (abstract and references included);
  • Font Century Schoolbook, size 12, double spaced. Lines should be numbered continuously;
  • The following strucuture is mandatory:

Title (short and concise)
Abstract (200-300 words)
Keywords (3 - 5 words);
Introduction;
Main text;
Final Considerations;
References.

  • Title: titles must be short and informative. They are important for search mechanisms, so authors must avoid generic titles and choose those that may attract the interest of specialists from various fields, referring to the main result found in the search. Authors should not use abbreviations   unless they are widely known (e.g. DNA, ONU, OMS, SIG, LANDSAT, etc...).
  • Abstract: here authors must summarize their article. Most readers define whether they will read the paper based on the Abstract, so be careful when writing it. The first phrase should contextualize in a few words how the article relates to a broader scientific field. Then, authors should narrow their  focus to present their research. In the sequence, the OBJECTIVES / METHODS and then the results. The last sentence should highlight the main CONCLUSIONS of the study. Do not include quotes and abbreviations in this section.
  • Keywords: after the abstract, authors must submit a list of at least three and at most five keywords. They must be different from the words used in the Title. Compound keywords must have no more than three elements.
  • Introduction: the Introduction will always be the first section  of the article. In this section, authors must contextualize the topic of the article, from a broader to a more specific approach, ending with the presentation of the objectives and hypothesis (if there are any) In the Introduction there should be no subsections.
  • Main text: after the Introductions, the following sections must be numbered sequentially (2, 3, 4…). Sub-sections must be numbered 2.1. (2.1.1, 2.1.2...), 2.2., etc. In the Main text authors must present their research methods, results and discussions. Many authors use the IMRAD structure  (Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion – these latter joint or separately) but conceptual articles may use other structures, given that they start with the Introduction. Authors must  not use topics, footnotes and headnotes in the Main text.
  • RESULTS, should be clearly stated.
  • Final Considerations: after the Main text, authors must elaborate their conclusions. These should be brief and related to the research objectives and hypothesis. The advancements provided by the research should be stated, and directions for future studies. Please have in mind that this section is not a copy of the Abstract. The Final Considerations should not be written as topics.
  • References: authors must provide a list of the references cited in the article. We use the ABNT reference standards.
    • Avoid using hard-to-get references (CD-ROMS, pendrives, etc...);
    • Citations in the text should be like: Abreu and Silva (2019) or (ABREU; SILVA, 2019); Silva (2012a) or (SILVA, 2012a), when there are multiple citations from the same author in a single year; Silva (2012; 2019) or (SILVA, 2012; 2019), for citations from the same author in different  2 years; citations with three authors or more, please use Vigevani et al. (2008) or (VIGEVANI et al., 2008).
    • At the end of this document there are examples of references formating. Authors must provide the DOI number to all references that have it. You may search for DOI numbers at https://apps.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery, copy and paste your references in the form and click Submit. All links must be active.

Authors' contribution: the authors must indicate in the "Letter to the Editor" document, to be sent at the moment of the submission, the contribution of each of the authors to the development of the work, with minimum criteria: actively participating in the discussion of the results; and Review and approval of the final version of the work. We recommend assigning roles according to the CRediT authorship roles, which are: Project Administration, Formal Analysis, Conceptualization, Data Curatorship, Writing – First Writing, Writing – Reviewing and Editing, Research, Methodology, Obtaining Funding, Resources, Software, Supervision, Validation and Visualization. Regardless of the contribution and registration system, all authors are equally responsible for the article.

Therefore, there is no established deadline for the completion of the evaluation process, as it is conditioned to the compliance of the deadlines by reviewers.

The reviews follow five parameters: originality, scientific relevance, clarity, and quality of illustrations. Reviewers may either: 1) Accept the paper; 2) Suggest minor corrections; 3) Suggest resubmission or 4) Reject the paper.
