SOCIEDADE & NATUREZA journal was founded in 1989, and was published by the Instituto de Geografia and the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Geografia of the Universidade Federal de Uberlândia - UFU. Is a scientific journal which aims at publishing original papers on Geography and its correlating areas. We publish the results of empirical, experimental and conceptual research. We wish to exchange knowledge with domestic and foreigners researchers and institutions, defend and respect the pluralism of philosophical, political and scientific ideas. The journal has one yearly issue and publishes articles continuously, i.e. they are published as soon as they are accepted and edited. The continuous publication reduces the time between the submission, decision, and online publication of the articles. The Journal is totally Open-Access and there are no charges on authors and subscribers. The abbreviated title of the journal is Soc. Nat., Which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references and bibliographic strips. |

Scope and policy
SOCIEDADE & NATUREZA is a journal devoted to publishing original scientific papers focusing on Geography and its related areas. It aims at encouraging the exchange of experience in its specialty with other institutions, national or foreign, which maintain similar publications, and defending and respecting the principles of pluralism of philosophical, political and scientific ideas. Public of the journal: Professors, researchers, students of geography and similar areas. All articles are reviewed by at least two specialists chosen by the editors. The evaluation is based on originality, importance in the context of the theme,; adequacy of the theoretical basis and methodology, clarity in exposing the subject, relevance of results, correct writing and quality of graphic illustrations. Submissions in Portuguese and Spanish must also provide an English version of the manuscript after acceptance. Translations must attend to the journal's requirements and the high standards of scientific writing. For that reason, authors whose native language is not English must provide a translation/language-checking certificate attesting the writing adequacy of the translated version. Sociedade & Natureza is a journal supporting and executing Open Science, to assure transparency and reliability to all the articles we publish. Therefore, authors are invited to deposit their submissions in reliable preprint servers. Authors who wish to deposit their articles previously as preprints should contact the editors prior to submission for further information about the process and to sign the Consent Form. Authors hold the copyrights for articles published in this journal. The journal has the rights for first publication. As they appear in a publicly accessible journal, the articles are free to use, with their own attributions, in educational applications. |
Form and preparations of manuscripts
Original empirical, experimental or conceptual articles will be accepted for publication in the Sociedade & Natureza. We expect to recieve articles resulting from master, doctorate or similar density research, on subject specific to Geographic Science. Preparing the article for submission Authors are entirely responsible for following all the instructions below. Articles that do not comply to the instructions will be rejected during pre-review.
Title (short and concise)
Authors' contribution: the authors must indicate in the "Letter to the Editor" document, to be sent at the moment of the submission, the contribution of each of the authors to the development of the work, with minimum criteria: actively participating in the discussion of the results; and Review and approval of the final version of the work. We recommend assigning roles according to the CRediT authorship roles, which are: Project Administration, Formal Analysis, Conceptualization, Data Curatorship, Writing – First Writing, Writing – Reviewing and Editing, Research, Methodology, Obtaining Funding, Resources, Software, Supervision, Validation and Visualization. Send of the manuscripts
The article must be submitted through the journal website. As part of the submission process, authors are required to verify the compliance of the submission in relation to all items listed in the Conditions for Submission. Authors are responsible for the content and opinion in their article. It does not represent the opinion of the journal Sociedade & Natureza. |
Manuscript evaluation policy
When authors submit an article to Sociedade & Natureza, it enters a pre-review assessment by the Editorial Board before we decide whether to send it out for further review. The editors will evaluate three criteria: 1) the paper suits the journal's Aims and Scope; 2) the paper follows the instructions available in the Guide for authors and 3) the paper is an original manuscript. This stage can take up to 15 days from the moment of submission. Papers that do not meet all these criteria will be returned to the authors without further consideration. After the pre-review assessment, an editor will be assigned to the submission and he/she will send the paper to at least two independent reviewers, which will evaluate its scientific content. The standard peer-reviewing is double-blinded, i.e. the anonymity of authors and reviewers is guaranteed. However, we follow Open Science standards and we allow authors and reviewers to identify themselves during peer-reviewing. Authors wishing to have their names made available should indicate it in the Letter to the Editor, and reviewers should sign their names after their comments. Each reviewer has 30 days to deliver his/her review after accepting the invitation. If a reviewer refuses the invitation or does not comply with the deadlines, the editor will assign a new one. Therefore, there is no established deadline for the completion of the evaluation process, as it is conditioned to the compliance of the deadlines by reviewers. The reviews follow five parameters: originality, scientific relevance, clarity, and quality of illustrations. Reviewers may either: 1) Accept the paper; 2) Suggest minor corrections; 3) Suggest resubmission or 4) Reject the paper. The reviewers are free to propose changes, correct, suppress or add excerpts and increase, point out ambiguous, redundant, incoherent descriptions or misuse of terminology and concepts, etc. In addition, they can upload files that supplement the comments registered in the system. The criteria have a consultative nature, and the editor is responsible for the final decision on the article.The evaluators are free to propose changes, correct, suppress or add excerpts and increase, point out ambiguous, redundant, incoherent descriptions or misuse of terminology and concepts, etc. In addition, they can upload files that supplement the comments registered in the system. After sending the evaluations, the authors will be informed about the editorial decision. The editorial decision will not be subject to reconsideration, except in exceptional situations to be analyzed by the editors. |

The journal Sociedade & Natureza works in accordance with the ethical principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), of the Code of Ethics American Educational Research Association - , the Code of Good Scientific Practice - FAPESP and the Council of Science Editors (CSE) regarding publication. To promote the integrity of research, the strengthening and transparency in the process, all the material published in is in accordance with the Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication and the Open Science Compliance Form. The SOCIEDADE & NATUREZA joournal adopts as a definition of misconduct the one pointed out by the "Office Research Integraty - ORI", which consists of:
Papers will be screened for plagiarism on Plagius - Plagiarism Detector Software, version 2.3.4 prior to the external review. If plagiarism is detected, just a paragraph without its proper citation is sufficient for the article to be returned to the authors. Regarding self-plagiarism, a manuscript may have less than 10% overall similarity to another article from the same author or 50% when it is the result of a master's or doctoral thesis. Above it, the article is sent back to the authors with an indication of the problem. Cases of plagiarism reported to the Journal after the publication of the articles will be analyzed by the Editorial Committee and, if the complaint is confirmed, the article will be removed from the Journal immediately. The authors may also be penalized. It is understood that "Research misconduct" does not include honest errors or differences of opinion, the Authors being subject to the sanctions established by the Editorial Board when actions relevant to the concept presented here are detected. In the case of Duplicate and Redundant Publication, Correction and Retractions, the Sociedade & Natureza Journal adopts the publication of original material, which has not been previously published or which is being revised in other journals, even if in other languages. Articles submitted to Sociedade & Natureza Journal cannot be submitted to any other journal while it is under evaluation in Sociedade & Natureza. Duplicate publication is the practice of submitting the same manuscript in more than one journal. Redundant publication is one that implies an inadequate division of the study results in more than one article, and if detected, it results in the rejection of the article or its retraction, and the Authors are subject to the sanctions established by the Editorial Board. In the case of corrections and retractions, resulting in errors or failures, regardless of nature or origin, and which do not imply "Misconduct in publication", they may be corrected through errata. In the case of manuscripts already published in which "Misconduct in publication" is identified, they will be subject to retraction through the explanation of the reasons, in which case authors and co-authors must agree with the content. Research related to humans and animals must be accompanied by a copy of approval from the ethics committee. |

Conflict of interests
The conflict of interest can be of a personal, commercial, political, academic or financial nature. Conflicts of interest can occur when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that can occur in the generation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting the manuscript, the authors are responsible for declaring conflicts that may have influenced the work. If there is a conflict of interest, the authors must inform you in a document signed and attached to the submission platform. |
