ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Brief Background

Revista Vórtex (ISSN 2317-9937 - Qualis A1) is an online, open-access journal dedicated to music and published in partnership with the Graduate Program in Music (PPGMUS) of the State University of Paraná (UNESPAR), Brazil. Revista Vórtex published its first issue in 2013, and since then has consolidated its editorial policy of excellence, being indexed internationally, with stratum A1 in the Qualis Capes evaluation.

Open Science Compliance

Revista Vórtex follows the Gold Open Access model.

Authors are asked to state: (a) whether the manuscript is a preprint and, if so, its location; (b) whether data, program code and other materials underlying the text of the manuscript are properly cited and referenced; and, (c) whether they accept openness options in the peer review process.

Authors are encouraged to make available all content (data, program code and other materials) underlying the text of the manuscript prior to or at the time of publication. Exceptions are allowed in cases of legal and ethical issues. The aim is to facilitate the evaluation of the manuscript and, if approved, to contribute to the preservation and reuse of the contents and the reproducibility of the research.

Revista Vórtex adopts the Open Science Compliance Form.

Ethics in Publication

Revista Vórtex considers plagiarism, self-plagiarism, recycling of texts, fabrication or falsification of data and images to be serious misconduct. Vórtex considers the use of other people's ideas without proper acknowledgement and reference to be plagiarism. The journal also condemns self-plagiarism or recycling of texts by the same author. This is when sections of the same text appear (usually without attribution) in more than one publication by the same author. The Editors adopt as a reference the criteria stipulated by COPE in “Text recycling guidelines for editors” (https://cope.onl/guidelines-text). The evaluation process is careful to identify such misconduct. In case of doubt, the Editors-in-Chief ask the authors for supporting data on the methodology and results, as well as any clarifications deemed necessary to support their decision-making. Finally, if any kind of plagiarism is detected, the work will be rejected.

Occasionally, when the journal's decision is contested, a committee of members of the Editorial Board and/or from outside the journal is set up to evaluate the work. In the event of evidence of misconduct, Revista Vórtex reserves the right to inform the authors' affiliation or funding institutions involved in the development of the research.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

In accordance with the Open Science guidelines, Revista Vórtex adopts transparency and information sharing practices, promoting the open access policy, the use of open repositories and the publication of Preprints on public platforms such as SciELO Preprints. Preprints refer to versions of an article that are shared publicly before undergoing peer review.

Articles deposited in the SciELO Preprint repository are registered with a DOI (digital object identifier), which ensures authorship and allows them to be cited. This practice provides immediate access to research results and allows authors to receive comments from readers about their study, making it possible to make changes deemed pertinent. This whole process takes place within the SciELO Preprint platform. At the end of this stage, the article can be submitted for evaluation and subsequent publication in Revista Vórtex. The evaluation opinions will be attached to the end of the text, in the “Preprint” section of our document template (template.docx), and the names and institutional affiliations of the evaluators will be published together.

Authors are encouraged to deposit and share the data, codes and/or methods used in the production of their manuscripts.

The journal offers authors and reviewers the option of opening up the peer review process, with or without identifying their names.

Peer Review Process

Revista Vórtex operates on a continuous publication system (1 volume per year), i.e. once the evaluation and editing process is complete, the work is published. The approximate time between submission and publication is up to 6 months. The entire process follows this flow:

  • The editors make a first reading of the manuscript and decide whether the work is of interest to the journal (2 weeks);
  • The editors analyze the profile and invite two reviewers for the task (2 weeks);
  • The reviewers evaluate the work (12 weeks);
  • Based on the evaluations, the editors decide on publication or rejection (2 weeks);
  • If accepted with necessary corrections and revisions, the manuscript returns to the authors (3 weeks);
  • Once accepted, the manuscript goes to Publishing, where it will be prepared for publication, with DOI assignment and layout finalization (3 weeks).

In addition, the journal offers authors and reviewers the option of opening the peer review process, with or without identifying their names.

These are the responsibilities of the reviewers:

  • Reviewers should help authors objectively, pointing out relevant work that could be cited. They should also instruct authors on how to improve their work for publication;
  • Reviewers must not have a conflict of interest and must remain neutral and impartial, informing the editors if any conflict arises. Possible cases of conflicts of interest include: nationality, religious or political beliefs, gender or other characteristics of the authors; conflicts of a personal, commercial, political, academic or financial nature. These conflicts can occur between authors, reviewers or editors;
  • The peer review process should be treated with confidence and should only involve designated editors and reviewers;
  • In the peer review process, the confidentiality of names is guaranteed (double-blind); a list of reviewers will be published at the end of the publication process, but will not relate the reviewer to each article;
  • Editors and reviewers must respect the intellectual independence of the authors;
  • On rare occasions, editors may provide opinions.

Evaluation Form:

The “Evaluation Form” used on our platform, for use by reviewers, reads as follows:

“The review is anonymous and may be sent to the author. Please do not share your name or contact details. Some observations: [1] respect the confidentiality of the material provided to you; [2] remember that all reviews must be conducted objectively, i.e. personal criticism of the author is inappropriate; [3] inform us in the event of a conflict of interest; [4] after the publication of each issue, the journal will make available on its website the identity of the reviewers and their institutional affiliations for the issue in question. The double-blind peer review system will always be respected. Articles will not be associated with the referees.

[1] Does the work make a relevant contribution to the field?

[2] Do the title, abstract and keywords express the content of the work?

[3] Is the theoretical foundation or methodology consistent?

[4] Is the language used clear? Does the text need grammar or spelling revision?

[5] Do the citations comply with the author-date system?

[6] Are all the stated references cited in the body of the text?

[7] Are the images and illustrations legible?

[8] General quality of the work?

[9] Final opinion

[10] General comment (optional)”

Open Data

In line with Open Science guidelines, Revista Vórtex adopts transparency and information sharing practices, promoting the open access policy, the use of open repositories and the publication of preprints on public platforms such as SciELO Preprints. Authors are encouraged to deposit and share the data, codes and/or methods used in the production of their manuscripts. Authors are responsible for storing and accessing the data, which should be deposited in open access repositories such as SciELO Data. To facilitate reuse, data should be made available in open formats (e.g. spreadsheets rather than PDFs). If the data is restricted, the restriction must be justified in the article and a contact point for requesting access must be provided. The journal offers authors and referees the option of opening up the peer review process, with or without identifying their names. We recommend the data repository SciELO Data.

Fees

We are part of a public, non-profit educational institution. Revista Vórtex does not charge article processing charges (APC) or submission fees, and the content is 100% free (Open Access). This is an open access journal, which means that all the content is available free of charge, at no cost to the user or their institution. Users are authorized to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or link to the full texts of the two articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without the need to obtain prior authorization from the editor or author. This is in line with BOAI's definition of open access.

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

Revista Vórtex adopts the criteria of good editorial practice as standard in its publication process. Plagiarism – the use of other people's ideas without proper acknowledgement and reference – is not considered good practice and is therefore not accepted. Self-plagiarism or recycling texts by the same author are also condemned by the journal. This is when sections of the same text appear (usually without attribution) in more than one publication by the same author. The Editors adopt as a reference the criteria stipulated by COPE in “Text recycling guidelines for editors”.

The evaluation process is careful to identify such misconduct. In case of doubt, the Editors-in-Chief ask the authors for supporting data on the methodology and results, as well as any clarifications deemed necessary to support their decision-making. Occasionally, when the journal's decision is contested, a committee of members of the Editorial Board and/or members from outside the journal is set up for evaluation. Finally, if any kind of plagiarism and/or misconduct is detected and proven, the manuscript will be rejected. In this case(s), Revista Vórtex reserves the right to inform the authors' affiliation or funding institutions involved in the development of the research.

- If an article that has already been published is the subject of an allegation of misconduct, Revista Vórtex will carry out an investigation and, if found, the work should be retracted and remain indexed in the journal's database as retracted. The retraction documents the reason(s) for the error and must be duly referenced, through communication from the author or editor or other authorized agent, and published in the same edition as the original work, always observing the SciELO “Guide to the registration, marking and publication of retractions” .

- Mistakes or errors, regardless of their nature or origin, which do not constitute misconduct, are corrected by means of an erratum. Revista Vórtex guarantees the timely publication of errata, corrections or retractions in accordance with SciELO's “Guide to the registration, marking and publication of errata”.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

Authors, reviewers and editors must ensure the absence of conflicts of interest throughout the publication process. Conflicts of interest can arise in situations related to the nationality, religious or political beliefs, gender or other characteristics of the authors, as well as of a personal, commercial, political, academic or financial nature.

When submitting a manuscript, authors must inform the editors of any possible conflict of interest by sending an e-mail (revista.vortex@unespar.edu.br) at the same time as the submission.

Reviewers must maintain a neutral and impartial stance. If they identify any conflict of interest with the authors – whether institutional, as recent co-authors, or of a personal nature – they should inform the editors immediately.

Adoption of Similarity Software

The Editors check all manuscripts received at the initial screening stage. Reviewers are also encouraged to carry out their own checks at the evaluation stage. In order to check for suspicions of similarity, plagiarism and self-plagiarism, Revista Vórtex uses the CopySpider© plagiarism detector software, with the following criteria: manuscripts with up to 15% similarity will be automatically accepted as long as they do not constitute plagiarism; manuscripts with 15-25% similarity will be subject to further analysis by the Editors, with possible consultation with the Advisory Board.

Gender and Sex Issues

The editorial team of Revista Vórtex, as well as the authors who publish in the journal, must always comply with the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines. The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines for reporting sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, results and interpretation of findings. In addition, Revista Vórtex observes the policy of gender equity in the formation of its editorial board.

Revista Vórtex is publicly committed to promoting equality and accessibility in all its practices and environments. This commitment is aligned with the DEIA principles (Diversity, Equity, Equality and Accessibility) as established by the IDEIA Declaration (https://25.scielo.org/en/ideia-declaration/). Our mission includes ensuring a diverse editorial team in terms of gender, geographical origin, ethnicity and institutional affiliations. To guarantee impartiality in our editorial process, we adopt transparent measures that ensure fairness at all stages of evaluation. We recognize the difficulties faced by different individuals and communities, and are committed to offering personalized support when needed. In addition, we actively support initiatives aimed at gender equality and seek strategies that promote greater representation in the academic and scientific community. This includes support for women, members of the LGBTI+ community, native peoples and ethnic groups in situations of vulnerability and marginalization. Our position is in line with UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5), which seeks to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls (https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal5#targets_and_indicators). We are committed to promoting these values in all our activities and to contributing to a fairer, more inclusive and equal world.

In the case of an image, just make sure that the caption describes its content well (for blind readers).

Citations and References

Citations (throughout the document) (ABNT NBR 10520:2023 Citations)

  • Up to three lines (complete) must be inserted in the body of the text with double quotation marks, font 12, and in the author-date-page system in brackets (Author, 2014, p. 1). The page(s) must be indicated.
  • With more than three lines (complete) should be in a separate paragraph and formatted in font 10 with a 4 cm indentation on the left, without quotation marks, single spaced, with the author-date-page system (Author, 2014, p. 1). Separate the quotation from the preceding and following paragraphs with a blank line.
  • As far as possible, avoid citations without a pagination reference. Thus, (Stockhausen, 1958, p. 33) is preferable to (Stockhausen, 1958) which is rather vague.
  • Quotations should be structured in the author-date system:
  • A work with one author: (Stockhausen, 1958, p. 33)
  • A work with up to three authors: (Boulez; Cage; Nattiez, 1980, p. 22)
  • A work with more than three authors: (Deliége et al., 2000, p. 11-13)
  • Citation of a work cited: (Forte 1977 apud Hyde, 2007, p. 57)
  • Work translated by the author: (Grisey, 1986, p. 11)
  • Name of the author included in the sentence: According to Murail (2001, p. 35)
  • Single quotation marks (‘’) are used to indicate a quotation within a quotation.
  • Footnotes can be used as references or additional comments. Indicate with Arabic numerals.
  • Avoid long footnotes. Optimize the reading of the text.
  • Indirect quotation is optional (paraphrase and condensation), but it is recommended to indicate the page(s).

References (at the end of the document) (ABNT NBR 6023:2018/2020 References)

Single line spacing, blank line between each reference, font size 12, no indentation. See below for some examples:
