ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Brief Background

Founded by Egon Schaden in 1953, Revista de Antropologia is the first Brazilian anthropological journal. It is currently an international and bilingual journal of the Department of Anthropology of the University of São Paulo – FFLCH/USP.

From 2023 onwards, Revista de Antropologia is published continuously with one volume per year and accepts articles, reviews, interviews, dossiers and photo essays at any time of the year, as submissions are made on a continuous basis.

Open Science Compliance

Revista de Antropologia endorses the principles of Open Science and encourages openness in the evaluation process, especially with regard to the publication of reviews. In these specific cases, the double-blind peer review process, which is the journal's general standard, will not be adopted.

Revista de Antropologia also accepts manuscripts that have been previously deposited on a non-commercial preprint server, as long as they have not been simultaneously submitted for peer review in another journal. The author must state whether the manuscript has been deposited on a preprint server and must provide the corresponding DOI.

This journal follows the Gold Open Access model.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Peer Review Process

Revista de Antropologia adopts the double blind peer review process, which is made up of 2 or more evaluators assigned to issue opinions on the manuscript. The identities of the reviewers, evaluators, authors are concealed from each other throughout the evaluation process. In line with open science practices, Revista de Antropologia offers authors and reviewers options for openness in the peer review process, with the possibility of publishing reviews as literature, in which the people involved may or may not be identified.

All scientific contributions are reviewed by the Editorial Board using the following processes:

Appraisal of originals: The Editorial Board meets regularly to appraise the articles and establish whether or not they fall within the editorial profile of the Revista de Antropologia. Once accepted by the Editorial Board, the article will follow the peer review procedures.

Initial review: At this stage, the Editorial Team assesses each manuscript for compliance with the rules set out in the Instructions for Authors. If the manuscript does not meet the established standards and formatting, it will be returned for correction.

Evaluation process: Accepted originals undergo peer review. In the absence of a conflict of interest with the authors, the Editorial Board appoints 2 external evaluators according to their specialization in the particular topic.

Opinions: The evaluators are instructed to inform you if there is any Conflict of Interest in relation to the article being evaluated. If they agree to issue an opinion, it will be placed directly in the OJS system. The decision can be “Accept submission”, “Mandatory corrections”, “Resubmit for evaluation”, “Reject submission” and “Resubmit for evaluation”.  Based on these opinions, the Editorial Board will assess the need for the manuscript to be revised by the author and sent for a second round of peer review.

Approval or rejection: The Editorial Board will decide, based on the reviews, whether to approve or reject the manuscript. If accepted, the manuscript will enter the editing process for publication. Before publication, the authors will be consulted for approval of revision, translation and layout.

RA offers two opening options:

The first is to publish in the final article the name or names of the editors responsible for the evaluation.

The second is to offer the option of publishing the article approval reports with or without identifying the reviewers.

Open Data

Revista de Antropologia encourages the sharing of data, methods and other materials used and resulting from the research that gives rise to the published articles. We recommend the following guides and lists of data repositories:

Fees

The authors take full responsibility for the content of the texts, which can be submitted at any time of the year free of charge. The entire proofreading and editing process is also free of charge due to the support provided by CNPq, CAPES, ABCD/USP, JStor and PPGAS/FFLCH/USP.

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

Revista de Antropologia supports the recommendations of Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication and adopts the Office Research Integrity's definition of misconduct, which consists of: fabrication, falsification or plagiarism in the preparation, execution or review of research or in the reporting of research results. Research misconduct is distinguished from honest mistakes or differences of opinion. Any cases of misconduct will be treated with the appropriate sanctions established by the Editorial Board. By submitting articles to Revista de Antropologia, authors automatically demonstrate that they are aware of and agree with the recommendations set out here.

Fabrication: Consists of inventing data or results by recording or reporting them.

Falsification: Consists of manipulating research processes, altering or omitting data or results so that the research is not accurately represented in its recording and publication.

Plagiarism: The appropriation of another person's ideas, processes, results or words without giving appropriate credit. Authors are responsible for the content and information contained in their manuscripts. Submissions to the journal will be eventually processed using iThenticate anti-plagiarism software. Manuscripts that have been plagiarized will be rejected and the authors may incur sanctions determined by the Editorial Board. In cases of Duplicate and Redundant Publication, Corrections and Retractions, Revista de Antropologia adopts the following recommendations:

Duplicate Publication and Redundant Publication: Revista de Antropologia undertakes to publish only original articles, i.e. those that have not been previously published or that are being reviewed in other journals, including in different languages. Articles submitted to the Revista de Antropologia should not be submitted to any other journal while they are being evaluated. Duplicate publication refers to the practice of submitting the same study to two or more journals. Redundant publication, in turn, consists of inappropriately dividing the results of the study into more than one article, making the research unnecessarily repeated in different publications. Such practices can lead to the article being rejected.

Corrections and retractions: Errors or flaws, regardless of their nature or origin, which do not constitute misconduct, will be corrected by publishing an erratum. Articles already published in which misconduct has been identified will be subject to retraction by the author and sanctions defined in due course by the Editorial Board.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

Revista de Antropologia requests that authors declare any personal or commercial interests that may bias the manuscript at the time of submission.

Conflicts of interest can be of personal, commercial, political, academic or financial nature. Conflicts of interest can occur when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting the manuscript, authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, the author(s) must disclose this in a signed document attached to the submission platform. For more information see: Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest.

Gender and Sex Issues

Revista de Antropologia observes the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines.  The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines for publications selected by the journal with regard to sex and gender issues related to the development of research and the analysis and interpretation of data published in articles. Revista de Antropologia also observes the policy of gender equity in the formation of its editorial board.

Ethics Committee

In special cases, depending on the profile of the research to be published in the article, the editorial board may request a Declaration of Approval from the Ethics Committee. If this is the case, at the time of submission, the authors must attach a Declaration of Approval from the Ethics Committee of the institution responsible for carrying out the research.

Articles must be unpublished and present the results of original research in dialog with theoretical-methodological models in Anthropology.
The minimum qualification required for authors of articles is a full degree in Social Sciences or related areas.

A maximum of 4 authors will be accepted. The names of the authors should not appear in the body of the article, in order to guarantee their anonymity in the evaluation process.

It is also requested that authorship be removed from Word properties. To do this, simply open the text in Word and click on the file menu, option “information”. Then click on “properties” and choose the “advanced properties” option. Then click on “summary” and delete the content of the “author” field.

Articles must contain a maximum of 10,000 words, including notes and bibliographical references (Arial font, size 12, 1.5 spacing and Word word processor). Articles must contain a title, abstract (between 100 and 150 words) and keywords (up to 5 keywords) in Portuguese, English and Spanish, with the use of a fourth language being optional, at the author's discretion.

Figures and tables should be inserted in the text, not at the end of the document as annexes.

Footnotes should be numbered in ascending order.

Authors are asked not to submit the same article to different academic journals.

Articles must be submitted via the Revista de Antropologia website and all metadata must be filled in correctly at the time of submission.

Book reviews and bibliographic critiques

Book reviews and bibliographic critiques (including translations of texts unpublished in Portuguese and up to three years old), films and exhibitions of interest to the anthropological debate are accepted.

The title of the review must be different from the title of the work reviewed.

The author must add an image of the cover of the book being reviewed to the submission.

The bibliography must follow the standard accepted by the Revista de Antropologia.

The text should present the broad ideas of the book, film and exhibition, its place in the anthropological debate and a critical appraisal of its contributions and scope.

The Editorial Board is responsible for deciding whether to publish the book review and bibliographical criticism.

Footnotes should be numbered in ascending order.

Authors are asked not to submit the same book review to different journals.

Reviews must be submitted via the Revista de Antropologia website and all metadata must be filled in correctly at the time of submission.

Authors are asked not to submit the same interview to different journals.

Interviews must be submitted via the Revista de Antropologia website and all metadata must be filled in correctly at the time of submission.

Dossiers

Revista de Antropologia accepts proposals for thematic dossiers.

Dossiers will be published containing between 3 and 8 articles dealing with the same theme, preceded by an introductory article.

The theme of the dossier must be of proven relevance to the contemporary anthropological debate and have international insertion. It is strongly recommended that the authors have different nationalities and belong to different institutions.

Dossiers may also be organized at the invitation of the Editorial Committee or at the suggestion of the Editorial Board.

The Editorial Board is responsible for accepting proposals for thematic dossiers.

The proposal must be sent containing the following information: title and presentation of the dossier proposal, full name and institutional affiliation of the organizers, title and abstract of the articles, containing the full name and institutional affiliation of the authors.

Authors are asked not to submit the same dossier proposal to different journals.

Digital Assets

Images (tables, charts, figures, illustrations, maps, diagrams and other digital assets) must be included in the Word file and must be sent separately (attached when submitting the article as a supplementary document).  Tables, graphs, charts and figures can be sent in color format. All images must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the text and must be accompanied by captions and image reference.

Resolution of the material: Digital assets should be sent in the highest possible resolution.
