Abstract in Portuguese:

RESUMO Este texto é dedicado às reflexões acerca da produção do corpo e da construção da pessoa entre os Guarani e Kaiowa e da centralidade das mulheres na organização social e no fazer político. As mulheres possuem uma potência política que atua em diversas esferas da vida social e através de diferentes mecanismos que partem de sua prerrogativa de “sentir mais”. Todavia, a posição que ocupam na organização social, às vezes, permite o endurecimento de suas falas, geralmente aquelas que são feitas para fora da aldeia, buscando a suavidade nas relações internas da tekoha, quando se percebe o risco iminente da vida. Trata-se de uma reflexão sobre os processos de produção corporal e de palavras femininas, enquanto práticas possíveis de uma política “presentativa” em que se identifica o esforço em produzir corpos belos, leves, alegres, mas também guerreiros, que são os corpos que ocupam as trincheiras das retomadas, o centro das grandes assembleias e outras estratégias de ação política guarani e kaiowa no Mato Grosso do Sul.

ABSTRACT This text reflects on the fabrication of the body and construction of personhood among the Guarani and Kaiowa, highlighting the centrality of women in social organization and political action. Women wield a political potency that acts in several spheres of social life, through different mechanisms that all originate in their prerogative of “feeling more.” However, their position in the social organization sometimes allows them to harden their speeches, especially those addressed to the outside of the village, while seeking softness in the internal relations within the tekoha, when imminent risk to life is perceived. We discuss the processes of producing feminine bodies and words, understood as possible practices of “presentative” politics in which we identify the effort to produce beautiful, light, happy, but also warlike bodies. Those are the bodies that occupy the trenches of the land repossessions, the center of the great assemblies, and other strategies of Guarani and Kaiowa political action in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

RESUMO A partir da definição de representação e presentação nas esferas do direito e da linguística, este artigo indaga em que medida esses conceitos poderiam contribuir para a compreensão de problemas clássicos e recentes da antropologia política. Tendo como premissa que relações de representação e presentação coexistem na produção da política ameríndia, operando, ora como a face metafórica, ora metonímica de um mesmo sistema, o texto explora algumas formas que essas relações assumem entre os Guarani Mbya. Isso inclui seu envolvimento na constituição da pessoa, nas interações com os deuses, no parentesco e na chefia. No caso da chefia, a análise computacional de dados etnográficos visa a enfrentar algumas controvérsias persistentes colocadas por modelos teóricos da política guarani.

ABSTRACT Beginning with the definition of representation and presentation in the realms of law and linguistics, this article inquires whether the same concepts could contribute to the understanding of classic and recent problems prevalent in political anthropology. On the premise that representative and presentative relationships coexist in the production of Amerindian politics, alternately operating as the metaphorical and metonymical sides of the same system, the text explores the forms that these relationships assume among the Guarani Mbya. This includes their involvement in the constitution of the person, in interactions with gods, in kinship and in chieftaincy. With respect to chieftaincy, the computational analysis of ethnographic data aims to address a set of long-standing controversies posed by theoretical models focused on Guarani politics.

RESUMEN El nacimiento, expansión y desarrollo de las organizaciones indígenas amazónicas, cada una de ellas con sus estructuras de representación política, ¿son un intento de los pueblos indígenas de demostrar que pueden organizarse de forma políticamente aceptable para los Estados? Estas organizaciones ¿buscan en consecuencia una mejor integración de los miembros que representan al Estado? es decir: ¿buscan más ciudadanía para los y las indígenas, y por lo tanto más Estado en sus territorios? La respuesta a estas preguntas es afirmativa si hacemos caso a los discursos oficiales de todas las partes concernidas, incluyendo la versión de las propias organizaciones indígenas y de la mayoría de análisis antropológicos. Sin embargo, en este artículo, partiendo de un análisis de un conjunto de pueblos de la Alta Amazonia, sostendré que, si tenemos en cuenta el ciclo histórico amplio que comienza en la época colonial, las cosas pueden estar ocurriendo de manera muy distinta.

ABSTRACT The rise, expansion and development of Amazonian indigenous organizations, each with their own structures of political representation, are they an attempt by indigenous peoples to demonstrate that they can organize themselves in a way that is politically acceptable to the State? Are these organizations consequently seeking a better integration of the members who represent to the State, i.e., are they seeking more citizenship for indigenous men and women, and therefore more State in their territories? The answer to these questions is affirmative if we pay attention to the official discourses of all parties concerned, including the version of the indigenous organizations themselves and most anthropological analyses. However, in this paper, based on an analysis of a group of indigenous peoples of the Upper Amazon, I will argue that, if we take into account the broad historical cycle that begins in colonial times, things may be happening very differently.

RESUMEN En 2015, 300 lideres Wampis, pertenecientes al grupo lingüístico Aent Chicham y viviendo al noroeste de la Amazonia peruana, proclamaron la creación del Gobierno Territorial Autónomo de la Nación Wampis (GTANW) para reivindicar su derecho internacional a la autodeterminación como pueblo indígena y proteger su territorio de las industrias extractivas. A partir del análisis del fenómeno de las ausencias de los representantes elegidos de cada aldea wampis en el parlamento del GTANW, donde se decide la política de la Nación Wampis, este articulo propone entender como la representación política estatal que inspiró la estructura de este gobierno amazónico ha sido reapropiada y transformada por los valores y prácticas locales de asamblea y de toma de decisiones colectivas. Estas innovaciones políticas son un ejemplo de cómo se puede conceptualizar una unidad política y un gobierno en las tierras bajas, región donde los grupos son más conocidos en la literatura etnográfica por sus dinámicas perpetúales de fragmentación social y por ser “contra el estado”.

ABSTRACT In 2015, 300 Wampis leaders, belonging to the Aent Chicham linguistic group and living in the northwestern Peruvian Amazon, proclaimed the creation of the Territorial Autonomous Government of the Wampis Nation (GTANW) to claim their international right to self-determination as an indigenous people and to protect their territory from extractive industries. By analysing the phenomenon of the absences of elected representatives from each Wampis village in the GTANW parliament, where the policies of the Wampis Nation are decided, this article proposes to understand how the state political representation that inspired the structure of this Amazonian government has been re-appropriated and transformed by local values and practices of assembly and collective decision-making. These political innovations are an example of how political unity and governance can be conceptualised in the lowlands, a region where groups are best known in the ethnographic literature for their perpetual dynamics of social fragmentation and for being “against the state”.

RESUMO A partir de um contexto recente de retomada territorial, com uma dezena de novas aldeias e proliferação de novos e diversos cultivos na Terra Indígena Tenondé Porã, em São Paulo, pretendo compartilhar reflexões em torno de um operador relacional central nesse processo, que é a um só tempo de renascimento territorial e de resistência à predação desmedida do mundo jurua (não indígena): o mborayvu. Mborayvu é um importante conceito guarani mbya, que, além de figurar como um ideal nas relações entre parentes, está associado a uma prática política que deve orientar a relação das lideranças com a comunidade. No ideal do mborayvu, o trabalho da liderança política, assim como do xamã, deve ser realizado sem prescrever ou esperar contrapartidas daqueles que o recebem. Isso se reflete também na capacidade da liderança de agregar diferentes parentelas em sua aldeia, que, tal qual os novos canteiros agroflorestais das retomadas, compartilham abundância em função do manejo de sua diversidade. Assim, a prática do mborayvu, conduzida pela presença marcante das lideranças dessas novas aldeias, aponta para modos políticos capazes de diversificar a vida e compartilhar a terra que logram desarticular a maquinaria não indígena da valorização capitalista e sua ameaça ambiental.

ABSTRACT From a recent context of territorial reclaiming, with a dozen new villages and a proliferation of new and diverse crops in the Tenondé Porã Indigenous Land in São Paulo, I intend to share reflections on a central relational operator in this process, which simultaneously involves territorial rebirth and a resistance to the excessive predation of the jurua (non-indigenous) world: the mborayvu. Mborayvu is a significant Guarani Mbya concept that, beyond representing an ideal in kinship relations, is associated with a political practice that should guide the leadership’s relationship with the community. In the mborayvu ideal, the work of political leadership, much like that of the shaman, should be carried out without prescribing or expecting reciprocation from those who receive it. This is also reflected in the leadership’s ability to bring different kinship groups together in their village, which, much like the new agroforestry in the retaken areas, share abundance through the management of their diversity. Thus, the practice of mborayvu, conducted by the prominent presence of the leaders of these new villages, points to political ways capable of diversifying life and sharing the land that succeed in disarticulating the non-indigenous machinery of capitalist valorization and its environmental threat.

RESUMEN Aunque históricamente el concepto de representación política como delegación de poder ha tenido poca relevancia en las organizaciones sociales de los pueblos indígenas en la Amazonía, es evidente que, en las últimas tres décadas, esta noción ha emergido, a veces de manera prominente, en los escenarios políticos indígenas y se ha convertido en un término común en el discurso de los líderes locales. Inspirado en el enfoque dinámico y relacional de la representación política propuesto por Michael Saward (2010), este artículo examina las pretensiones de representar hechas por diversos actores y las dinámicas de representación que generan dentro de las comunidades kakataibo (Amazonía peruana). Al enfatizar la importancia de escenificar la relación de representación, especialmente durante la fiesta anual de la comunidad nativa, el artículo pone de relieve la naturaleza transaccional, parcial y contingente de la representación política en el contexto indígena amazónico.

ABSTRACT While the concept of political representation as a delegation of power has historically had limited relevance in the social organizations of indigenous peoples in the Amazon, it is evident that over the past thirty years, this notion has emerged, sometimes prominently, in indigenous political arenas and has become a common term in the discourse of local leaders. Drawing inspiration from Michael Saward’s dynamic and relational approach to political representation (2010), this article examines the claims to represent made by various actors and the representation dynamics they generate within the Kakataibo communities (Peruvian Amazon). Emphasizing the significance of performing the representation relationship, especially during the annual village festival, the article sheds light on the transactional, partial, and contingent nature of political representation in the Amazonian indigenous context.

RESUMO Cabo Verde aparece na memória social e nas práticas de pessoas cabo-verdianas enquanto um território atravessado e costurado pelas mobilidades a outros territórios, desde Europa, Américas e África. Dos vários territórios possiveis, São Tomé e Principe foi o palco de experiências de dor, de explorações e tentativas de desumanização. Com as narrativas dos meus interlocutores em alusão aos modos de vida no ‘tempo do branco’ versus ‘tempo da empresa’ (nacionalização das roças), vividos nas múltiplas roças santomenses, sinalizo os horrores e os modos escravistas que povoaram as vivências e os modos laborais no mato e nas roças. Proponho que revisitemos os contornos deste modus operandi laboral que emana do acontecimento do contrato, enquanto chave central na fabricação de vidas e na criação das várias temporalidades - o tempo presente, atual e cotidiano, acoplada à categoria ‘castigo’ espelhada nas práticas e nos cotidianos devastados pelo ‘castigo’ de vidas escravizadas.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT Cape Verde appears in the social memory and practices of Cape Verdean people as a territory crossed and sewn by mobilities to other territories, from Europe, the Americas and Africa. Of the various possible territories, São Tomé and Principe was the stage for experiences of pain, exploitation and attempts at dehumanization. With the narratives of my interlocutors in allusion to the ways of life in the ‘time of the white man’ versus ‘the time of the company’ (nationalization of the fields), lived in the multiple fields of Santomean, I point out the horrors and the slavery ways that populated the experiences and ways workers in the bush and in the fields. I propose that we revisit the contours of these labor modus operandi that emanate from the event of the contract, as a central key in the fabrication of lives and in the creation of the various temporalities - the present, current and everyday time, coupled with the category ‘punishment’ mirrored in the practices and daily lives devastated by the ‘punishment’ of enslaved lives.
