ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Brief Background

 

Launched in 1961, RAE supported the development of administrative thinking in Brazil and the consolidation of the profession of administrator.

RAE began its internationalization in the 2000s, prioritizing Ibero-American nations and developing countries.
Timeline highlights:

  • 2002: the beginning of internationalization, with the participation of foreign members in the reviewer board and publication of articles by renowned authors from abroad.
  • 2003: adherence to the principles of Open Science, initiated with open access to all content produced since the journal's creation.
  • 2003-2010: approval by the main indexers of world journals, such as Journal Citation Reports, Web of Science/Clarivate, Scopus/Elsevier, Directory of Open Science Journals (DOAJ), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO Brasil) – among more than 30 worldwide indexers (see Metrics & Indexers).
  • 2016: Approval by COPE – Committee on Publication Ethics, a world reference institution in quality, rigor, and exemplary practices in scientific publishing.
  • 2021: inclusion in the AJG/ABS ranking, a world ranking of journals in the area of Administration, published by the Association of Business School, United Kingdom.

Our Publisher

RAE is published by Fundacao Getulio Vargas, São Paulo School of Business Administration (FGV EAESP), the first business administration school created in Brazil, in 1954, and currently the only holder of triple international accreditation: AACSB, EFMD, and AMBA.

FGV EAESP has 240 professors and around 4,000 students in undergraduate, executive graduate, and academic graduate programs.
The institution has 20 applied research centers and is recognized for its organizational and social impact, having received the EFMD Business School Impact System (BSIS) certificate in 2021.

RAE is classified by the CAPES Qualis system as "A2" journal.

Open Science Compliance

 

RAE is committed to the core values of Open Science, promoting the publication of research results with quality and integrity, as a collective benefit, with equity and justice, and with diversity and inclusion.

RAE also adheres to the Open Science criteria recommended by the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO):

  • Provides open access content.
  • No publication fee is charged to authors.
  • Accepts articles published in preprints repositories (for example, SciELO Preprints, Fighshare, Zenodo, arXiv, PeerJ Preprints, SOC ARXIV) and encourages authors to anticipate the release of previous versions of their work, and is in this way contributing to the dissemination of research and for peer-to-peer collaborations.
  • Recommends that authors deposit data and all research materials in data repositories, contributing to the storage, access and sharing of data.
  • Discloses the identity of the associate editor responsible for the evaluation process in the published article.
  • Offers the possibility of disclosure of the identity of the reviewers responsible for the evaluation in the published article.
  • Offers the option of publishing the reviewer report of articles with or without the disclosure of the identity of the reviewers.

The RAE Code of Ethics outlines the basic principles guiding the conduct of all members and partners involved in the scientific certification and publication process—authors, reviewers, editors, council and editorial board members, copy editors, translators, editorial staff, etc. It also presents the Policies and Procedures for Violations of the Code of Ethics and Ethical Misconduct.

Ethical Conduct

Authors

  •  Guarantee the integrity of the data presented in their article.
  •  Confirm the authenticity and originality of their article.
  • Certify that their article contains appropriate citations and properly identifies third party source material.
  • State that their article does not contain any slanderous or defamatory statements and does not infringe on any third party intellectual property, commercial or industrial rights.
  • Guarantee that their article is not undergoing an evaluation process at another periodical.
  • Declare any potential conflicts of interest that may be caused by their article. A conflict of interest is any personal, intellectual, commercial, political, academic or financial issue. Conflicts of interest can occur when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts.
  • Will immediately notify the editor if any errors are identified in the article and will contribute to their immediate correction, whether before publication and/or in connection with the publication of errata, when the error is identified after publication.
  • The author who submits the article declares that all the authors who have signed the work to be published have made effective contributions to its creation and preparation. RAE recommends alignment with the authorship criteria of CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy).
  • Certify that this is the correct journal to publish their article.
  • Certify that the content and format of their article is appropriate for the selected journal.
  • Declare at the time of manuscript submission if ChatGPT or Large Language Models were used for writing, producing images or graphic elements of the article, or in the collection and analysis of data. Additionally, state that after using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as necessary, assuming full responsibility for the publication's content.

Editor-in-Chief

  • States that ethical conduct has been followed in all the processes involving the submission, double blind review process and the publication of articles.
  • Guarantees integrity, impartiality, confidentiality and transparency in the scientific certification process for the articles submitted for publication.
  • Guarantees quality, originality, rigor, coherence, and diversity of thought in the works approved for publication.
  • Guarantees ethical conduct, integrity, impartiality, transparency and agility in communicating with the various actors involved in the submission, evaluation and publication processes.
  • Assures that the periodical will contribute to the advancement of knowledge.
  • Vouches for the periodical’s viability and development together with the scientific, academic and business communities.
  • Will make every effort to constantly improve the journal.
  • Will establish and manage conflict of interest policies for the various actors who participate in the scientific certification and publication process.   • Will alert the editor-in-chief about similar published or submitted works and/or any other information relevant to adhering to this publication’s ethical standards.
  • Assure confidentiality, impartiality and integrity in evaluating the article.
  • Will not use, under any circumstances, privileged information that they have access to as members of the Scientific Editorial Board.
  • Will suggest suitable active reviewers with experience directly related to the specific area of the article submitted for publication.
  • State that they will contribute effectively to the improvement of the paper, stimulating reviewers to review the work critically, offering suggestions for improvement and complementing their respective reviews.
  • Agree to complete the evaluation in the timeframe agreed to with the editor.
  • Will alert the editor-in-chief about any possible conflicts of interest that would prejudice the integrity of the evaluation process. Ad hoc reviewers

  • Will position themselves as references in terms of ethical conduct and integrity.
  • Assure confidentiality, impartiality and integrity in evaluating the article.
  • Will not use, under any circumstances, privileged information to which they have had access as a reviewer.
  • Promise to contribute to the effective improvement of the paper, with critical and constructive reviews.
  • Agree to complete the evaluation within the timeframe agreed to with the editor.
  • Will alert the editor about any possible conflicts of interest that could prejudice the integrity of the evaluation process. A conflict of interest is any personal, intellectual, commercial, political, academic or financial issue. Conflicts of interest can occur when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts.
  • Will alert the editor about any similar published or submitted works.

Focus and Scope

 

RAE is based on an international community of researchers, professors, and students, interested in creating knowledge that contributes to developing solutions to the great challenges faced by organizations and contemporary society.

RAE is a generalist journal in the field of Management, covering a broad spectrum of knowledge domains, perspectives, and themes.
RAE publishes theoretical development articles, empirical works, bibliographic reviews, and position papers. 

 RAE does not publish articles of restricted interest, texts on research methods, articles on Public Administration or Public Policies, book reviews, texts on teaching and learning, and teaching cases

RAE covers the traditional fields of management knowledge, such as strategy, operations, marketing, finance, information technology, and people management; as well as emerging fields, which eventually cross over to established fields such as sustainability, entrepreneurship, digitization, and data science.

Contributions

RAE seeks to publish content that has an impact on science, organizations and society and invites its community to submit the following contributions:

  • Theoretical articles that explore emerging and relevant phenomena innovatively and creatively, contributing to their understanding, preferably with assumptions that can be tested in the future. The articles must explain how the new theories may contribute to the improvement of managerial practices in the future.
  • Empirical articles, which test and/or develop existing theories, or develop new theories. Articles must clearly explain the implications of their findings for managerial practices.
  • Literature review articles, which synthesize and integrate recent advances in topics of great relevance to organizations and society. Articles should present a critical view of the state of the art and point out ways for future developments.
  • Positioning articles, which defend a position on an issue of great importance, defending the arguments in a structured and well-founded way. Articles must present a clear connection with managerial practice.
  • Calls for papers dealing with phenomena and issues of great relevance to organizations and society, preferably related to Sustainable Development Goals. The calls for paper have to define and contextualize the topic, establish questions to be explored and inform the basic theoretical framework.
 

 

Digital Preservation

 

The RAE-Revista de Administração de Empresas follows the standards defined in the SciELO Program Digital Preservation Policy

Additionally, RAE uses the LOCKSS system, developed by Stanford University, to create a distributed archive among participating libraries. This system allows these libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration.

RAE is also part of the Cariniana Network of Digital Preservation Services of IBICT, which provides preservation for any journal in the Open Journal System (OJS) in Brazil. It is also included in deposit policy directories, such as Diadorim.

Peer Review Process

 

Articles submitted to RAE undergo the following evaluation stages:

  • Preliminary format check: In this initial stage, the submitted articles (original and revised versions) are checked for format in accordance with the journal’s guidelines; 
  • Similarity detection (iThenticate - Similarity Check): Articles that pass the format evaluation will be subjected to software analysis to identify potential cases of similarity
  • Assessment of Alignment with RAE’s Scope and Publication Potential by the Editor-in-Chief: The Editor-in-Chief evaluates whether the article aligns with RAE’s scope, topics of interest, and its potential to impact science, organizations, and society.
  • Assessment of Contribution by the Associate Editor or Invited Specialist Researcher: An Associate Editor or a specialist researcher appointed by the Editor-in-Chief conducts a detailed assessment of the article’s contribution to a specific area within the field of Administration. This evaluation considers the work’s relevance, originality, and potential impact. The Associate Editor or specialist researcher selects two or three reviewers for the Peer Review process. Based on the reviewers’ feedback, they issue a recommendation to the Editor-in-Chief, who makes the final decision on the article.
  • Peer Review: The article is reviewed by two experts in the field following the guidelines for reviewers. If there are significant disagreements between the reviewers, a third reviewer may be consulted. The Associate Editor or specialist researcher uses these reviews to provide an editorial recommendation to the Editor-in-Chief, who then decides whether the article should proceed in the publication process.
 

 

Open Data

 

The RAE Recommends that authors deposit data and all research materials in data repositories, contributing to the storage, access and sharing of data, for example, Data, Fighshare, Zenodo, arXiv, SOCARXIVpapers and encourages authors to anticipate the release of previous versions of their work, and is in this way contributing to the dissemination of research and for peer-to-peer collaborations.

 

 

Fees

 

RAE does not impose any Article Processing Charges (APC) or other fees for submission or processing. All content is made freely available through open access, ensuring no cost to authors or readers.

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

 

Instances of misconduct will be addressed in accordance with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines.

The RAE Code of Ethics outlines the basic principles guiding the conduct of all members and partners involved in the scientific certification and publication process—authors, reviewers, editors, council and editorial board members, copy editors, translators, editorial staff, etc. It also presents the Policies and Procedures for Violations of the Code of Ethics and Ethical Misconduct.

To be a part and to play any role in the process of scientific certification and the publication of RAE-Revista de Administração de Empresas, one must agree to the principles of this Code of Ethics.

Articles submitted to RAE are subjected to similarity checks using the iThenticate/Similarity Check platform, operated by Crossref, before the desk review and consideration of other submitted versions. The Editor-in-Chief ensures that only original works proceed to the evaluation process.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

 

In alignment with the RAE Code of Ethics, a conflict of interest is defined as any personal, intellectual, commercial, political, academic, or financial issue that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts.

RAE is dedicated to establishing and managing conflict of interest policies for all participants in the journal’s scientific certification and publication process.

  • Authors are responsible for declaring any potential conflicts of interest related to their article as early as possible.
  • Associate editors and ad hoc reviewers must notify the Editor-in-Chief of any conflicts of interest that could compromise the integrity of the evaluation process.
  • Editorial board members are required to alert the Editor-in-Chief of any conflicts of interest that may affect their impartiality as board members

Adoption of Similarity Software

 

RAE uses the iThenticate/Similarity Check system, operated by Crossref, to ensure that all submitted manuscripts are original. This similarity analysis is conducted after a preliminary format check.

 

 

Use of Software and Artificial Intelligence (AI)

 

When submitting manuscripts via ScholarOne, authors must disclose whether AI was used in writing the manuscript, creating images or graphic elements, or in data collection and analysis. If AI was utilized, authors must specify the type(s) of AI used in the designated field within in Step 5 of the ScholarOne. Basic grammar and spelling check tools, references, and similar resources, it is not necessary to indicate AI tools. If there is nothing to declare, simply click 'No' without adding a statement.

It is important to note that only humans can be credited as authors, and AI tools cannot be listed as authors for any article submitted to or published by RAE.

 

 

Gender and Sex Issues

 

Both the RAE editorial team and authors must adhere to the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines. The SAGER guidelines include a set of directives that guide the reporting of information on sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and the results and interpretation of findings. Furthermore, RAE observes a gender equity policy in forming its editorial board.

 

 

Ethics Committee

 

When the article involves procedures with human subjects or sensitive data under the LGPD (General Data Protection Law), the authors must attach a declaration of approval from the institution's ethics committee responsible for approving the research.

 

 

Copyright

 

RAE ensures that authors retain moral and usage rights for their articles under the Creative Commons BY (CC-BY) license. Authors maintain copyright over their published articles, while the journal retains the right of first publication.

 

 

Intellectual Property and Terms of Use

 

RAE commits itself to contributing to the protection of authors’ intellectual property rights and:

  • Uses the Creative Commons Attribution License (CC-BY) for all published texts, except where there are indications of specific authors’ and sponsorship rights;
  • Assures the authors' moral rights and use of the article, according to Creative Commons BY (CC-BY). The author retains the copyright of the published article and the journal has the right of first publication.
  • Adopts the Similarity Check system operated by Crossref
  • Recommends alignment with the authorship criteria of CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy);
  • Adopts actions to combat plagiarism and bad ethical conduct in accordance with the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
  • Post-approval articles: Approved articles undergo spelling, grammar, and technical review, without altering the original meaning of the text. The final version is sent to the author for approval before publication.

Authors' responsibility

The content of signed articles is the sole responsibility of the authors. The authors guarantee that the manuscript does not contain any copyright infringement or copyright of third parties, and that the article has not been submitted for publication in any other journal.

Processes regarding copyright policy and best practices for articles published in RAE are also described in the Participation Rules, which authors must read and accept when submitting a contribution to the journal.

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Types of Documents Accepted

 

Manuscripts can be submitted in English or Portuguese. Accepted articles and essays are published in English and in Portuguese.

Articles submitted for publication in RAE must be original and must not be under consideration by any other journal. Articles from papers presented at scientific conferences and theses are accepted.

Accepted articles published in preprints repositories (for example, SciELO Preprints, OSF Preprints (Open Science Framework Preprints), PeerJ Preprints).

Publication Process

 

Once approved, the article is submitted for editing and spelling and grammar review.

The editorial office sends the final version for approval to the authors.

Articles in Portuguese must be translated by the authors, to ensure bilingual publication.

RAE is an online publication in continuous publication flow, aiming at speed in article dissemination, with six editions per year.

All approved articles will be assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) upon final publication in RAE.

 

 

Authors' Contribution

 

During the online submission process, authors should:

Report authorship contribution based on CRediT criteria.

  • Declare the possibility or not of conflicts of interest in carrying out and communicating the research. A conflict of interest is any personal, intellectual, commercial, political, academic or financial issue. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that may influence their writing or evaluation of manuscripts
  • Indicate the author of correspondence.
  • Insert the authors' data: email, institutional affiliation (main unit/subunit or department), city, state and country;
  • Include link to each author's ORCID.
  • Include link to each author's CV Lattes (for Brazilians).
 

 

Manuscript Preparation

 

Checklist before submission:

  • The article is original and unpublished and is not being evaluated by another journal.
  • Authors and co-authors can have two articles in the submission or evaluation process at RAE.
  • The authors read the instructions on Ethics and Conduct guidelines and the Guidelines of the journal.
  • The text file is in .doc or .docx format and without author identification.
  • The title makes sense, is brief and objective and keywords, and abstract are attractive and reflect the content of the article.
  • Length of the Article: A maximum of 8,000 words – for the complete text, including title, abstract, five keywords, tables, figures and references.
  • Length of the Essay: A maximun of 5,000 words – for the complete text, including title, abstract, keywords, tables, figures and references.
  • The version of the text submitted must follow the format of the section in which the work is inserted: Template Article and Template Essay.
  • The font used throughout the text is Times New Roman, size 12. Titles and subtitles are in bold. The text alignment must be: Justified and the line spacing: 1.5.
  • The text does not have footnotes and endnotesTables and figures must be analyzed/discussed and inserted in the end of the text (after the References), and if it is colored it has been transformed into gray or black tones. Throughout the text it is necessary to mention where they are to be inserted.
  • There is no identification of authorship in the text or in any document submitted by the author as a Supplemental File for Review.
  • Citations and references follow the rules of the American Psychological Association – APA (7th edition).
  • The Open Science Compliance Form has been filled and prepared for submission (must be attached as a Supplemental File for Review in Step 2 (Step 2: File Upload) in the ScholarOne system).
  • The data of all authors must be filled and the ORCID ID must be informed.
  • In case the author(s) use ChatGPT or Large Language Models for writing, producing images or graphic elements of the article, or in the collection and analysis of data, it is necessary to add an AI use declaration in Step 5 of the ScholarOne submission process. Example: 'During the preparation of this work, the author(s) used [NAME OF TOOL/SERVICE] in order to [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for the content of the publication
 

 

Article/Essays Submission Format

 

Articles

Theoretical articles should be supported by a broad bibliography of research and should propose new models for relevant phenomena in the field of Business Administration. Empirical works should provide an advance in the field in terms of providing research that has a rigorous methodology and that is conducted with appropriate criteria and adequate analysis.

General formatting

  • Language of publication: RAE accepts submissions in Portuguese, English and Spanish.
  • Length: A maximum of 8,000 words – for the complete text, including title, abstract, keywords, tables, figures, and references. Please add the word count after the abstract.
  • Font: Time New Roman, size 12; Alignment: Justified; Line spacing: 1.5.
  • Italics: Used for words and/or expressions from a foreign language which are not found in Portuguese dictionaries, as well as book titles and periodicals.
  • Bold: Used for headings and subheadings.
  • Quotation marks: Used for direct citations of up to 40 words.
  • Authorship: To preserve anonymity, the identification of the article’s authors is restricted to the registration form in the article submission system. There should be no identification of the author(s) within the article.
  • The title must capture the essence of the manuscript, be brief and objective. It must be written in the three languages.
  • TITLE (E):Upper case + bold + justified. Respect the limit of 80 characters with spaces.
    • Título (P): Upper and lower case + bold + italic + justified.
    • Título (S): Upper and lower case + bold + italic + justified.
  • Abstract must be written in the three languages. Make sure the abstract reflects the content of the article.
  • Term ABSTRACT (E) | RESUMO(P) | RESUMEN (S): Upper case + bold. Text with at most 150 words in upper and lower case in a single paragraph.
  • The toltal of five keywords must be written in the three languages. Choose attractive keywords that reflect the topics covered in the document.
  • Term Keywords(E) | Palavras-Chave (P) | Palabras Clave (S): Upper case + bold. Respect the limit of five keywords in lower case, always separated by commas.
  • Article sections: Avoid the use of abbreviations in titles. Headings and subheadings should not be numbered
    Section Heading: Upper case + bold + justified.
    • First Subheading: Upper and lower case + bold + justified.
    • Second Subheading: Upper and lower case + bold + gray.
  • Paragraphs: The first paragraph of each section should not be indented, the others should be indented 1.25 cm.
  • Footnotes and endnotes: RAEdoes not publish footnotes or endnotes. When relevant, insert the content in the text.
  • Acknowledgements: Acknowledgements to financial institutions and the owners of authors’ rights, for reproductions, should be sent in a separate file; after approval, when the article is published, the acknowledgment (s) will be inserted at the end of the article.

       Example: We wish to thank Fapemig, CNPq and CAPES

  • Abbreviations: When a term is presented for the first time in a text, it should be written out, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Subsequent mentions may be abbreviated without explanation. The article should not alternate between the written out and abbreviated forms. Example: Supply Chain Management (SCM). 

Equations and hypotheses

Equations should be numbered using Arabic numerals and right aligned.

Examples:
x2 + y2 = z2                       (1)
(x2 - y2)/2 = z                    (2)

Hypotheses should be numbered with Arabic numerals and right aligned. The numbering should be preceded by the abbreviation "H".
Example: H1: Top management leadership has a positive and significant influence on alliances and resources.

Essays

Essays are freer forms of scientific contribution and are characterized by critical and creative approaches, revealing new perspectives which lead readers to reflect on themes relevant to their respective areas of knowledge. Essays should be consistent theoretically and point to innovation or improvement in their respective fields of study.

  • If your paper presents a theoretical development but is not appropriate for the Essay Section, consult the formatting for theoretical development articles.

Citations and references follow the rules of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition).

 

 

Digital Assets

 

Tables and figures

Tables and Figures follow the format described in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition) and must be inserted after the References and in the text is necessary to mention where they are to be inserted. These elements should be submitted in an editable form and if it is colored it has been transformed into gray or black tones. They should not be sent in separate files. 

Tables are a visual representation of numeric, textual data, and/or textual information. It is numbered in bold, contains the title, and is composed of columns and rows.

Figures are graphs, maps, photographs, infographics, and other illustrations not textual. It is numbered in bold and contains the title.

Attention: 

  • The formats considered for editable files are: original Excel file (XLS), Vector (EPS, Ai, PDF and SVG), for Graphics drawn directly in Word, editable text is also suitable and finally, if they are generated or drawn in specific software, must be exported in Vector.
  • The excessive use of tables, figures, exhibits and graphs can make the text more difficult to read and understand.
  • Make sure that all the Tables and Figures are referenced in the text.
  • RAE does not publish attachments or appendices. If it is relevant, they should be incorporated in the text or as a table/exhibit, respecting in this case the formatting for tables/exhibits.
 

 

Citations and References

 

RAE uses the norms of the American Psychological Association - APA (7 ed) for formatting citations and references.
The publications are cited in the text using the author-date system and are listed in alphabetic order in the list of references.

Citation

Direct citation

A text or phrase by another author or the same author should be reproduced exactly. In the text, the author, the year, and the specific page or paragraph number must be informed, if the material does not have pagination, the title or name of the section, and paragraph number must be included.

  • For citations of less than 40 words, use double quotation marks and incorporate it into the paragraph. If the citation appears in the middle of a sentence, you should use double quotation marks and include the year in parentheses.

For March (2007), EGOS was conceived “[…] as a kind of intellectual social movement within organizations scholarship, defending, developing and extending a particular point of view and producing, augmenting and proclaiming European resistance […] (p. 10)” to the hegemony of North-American scholars. 

  • If the citation appears at the end of a sentence, then cite the source in parentheses immediately after the quotation marks.

The analysis of empowerment involves, therefore, “exploring how the different catalysts cause empowerment as well as changes in empowerment capacity at individual and community levels.” (Corbett & Keller, 2005, p. 95)
