ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Brief History

REM - International Engineering Journal (old REM - Revista Escola de Minas) is the first technical journal in South America. It was founded in January, 1936 by students from the Escola de Minas de Ouro Preto and has since specialized in publishing articles in the fields of Civil Engineering, Geology, Metallurgy & Materials, Mining, and Mechanics & Energy.

With the change of the capital of the state of Minas Gerais from Ouro Preto to Belo Horizonte, some schools left, but there was resistance from many former students against transferring the Escola de Minas to Barbacena or the new capital.

Consequently, the Escola de Minas became isolated, which gave rise, among its students, to the idea of creating a technical-scientific magazine, as a way of escaping the isolation in which Ouro Preto had been placed. Two attempts failed: Auri-verde and Nossa Magazines. But, in 1936, REM became a reality, and as its first editor wrote: we hope to transform the current attempt into a lasting achievement.

Its objective is to serve as a publication medium for original technical-scientific works by national and foreign researchers in those areas. Original contributions (articles and letters) are accepted. Review articles are subject to invitation and/or editorial review.

Open Science Compliance

Since 2001, REM has been part of SciELO journals, becoming part of Open Science publications, a scientific activity practiced in an open manner, and allowing free access to all published articles, in all domains of knowledge in the journal.

In accordance with Open Science guidelines, REM adopts a series of practices, such as the open access policy, the code of good practice for editors, reviewers and authors, and the use of social networks to disseminate published articles.

REM encourages the sharing of analysis datasets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, scripts and additional materials made available in trusted open online repositories, if they cannot be published in the article itself, and this information must be indicated in the manuscript. Consequently, articles that communicate research must indicate and reference the availability of the content underlying the preparation of the research and the results obtained. REM requires the precise indication of the role of each author in articles with multiple authors.

REM encourages the publication of preprint articles on public platforms, such as Preprints, SciELO Preprints and EmeRI, so that, if applicable, they can be discussed openly before being published.

This journal follows the Gold Open Science model.

Ethics and Misconduct Policy, Errata and Retraction

As REM is a multidisciplinary publication, the Associate Editor is fully responsible for decisions regarding manuscripts and may eventually disregard the examiners' recommendations.

The Associate Editor and authors cannot come from the same entity or have any conflict of interest.

It is mandatory for the author(s) to indicate potential reviewers for the submitted manuscript (see instructions below: Mandatory Indication of Reviewers). Authors may also nominate unpreferred reviewers. It is up to the Associate Editor to accept or not the nominations.

The appointed evaluators must have knowledge of the subject of the submitted article, they must have a doctorate, or be considered “recognized knowledgeable” by the scientific community. They also cannot belong to the authors' institution and cannot come from the same entity.

REM adopts measures to deal with ethical issues and/or issues that may harm the journal's reputation.

Focus and Scope

The objective of REM is to serve as a means of publishing original and technical-scientific articles written by national and foreign researchers in those areas. Original contributions (articles and letters) are accepted, as are review articles.

Note: review articles depend on invitation and/or analysis from the Editors.

REM will accept articles from the following areas of Engineering knowledge:

• Civil
• Geosciences
• Oil and Energy
• Metallurgy, Materials and Mechanics

EDITORIAL POLICY

Peer Review Process

Blind Peer Review

REM adopts blind peer review. Although authors are allowed to nominate potential reviewers for the article, some measures are taken to ensure the integrity of the blind peer review (see instructions below: Mandatory Nomination of Reviewers).

To complete the precautions, it is prohibited for the Associate Editor and author to have the same origin.

In line with Open Science, SciELO considers three options for advancing the opening of peer-review, By mutual agreement and at the discretion of the Associate Editor, REM offers authors/reviewers to accept the aforementioned peer review options:

1. Double-blind peer review: in this modality, authors and reviewers do not know each other’s identities.
2. Single-blind peer review: in this modality, authors reveal their identity, but reviewers remain anonymous
3. Open peer review: in this modality, authors and reviewers know each other’s identities.

The standard form of evaluation adopted by the journal is double-blind. However, in cases of preprint, it is not possible to guarantee the anonymity of the authors and therefore, the evaluation can be single-blind or open.

Preprints

REM has gradually aligned itself with the service of accepting manuscripts previously deposited in the preprint repository. A preprint is defined as a manuscript ready for submission to a journal and which is deposited on trusted preprint servers before or in parallel with submission to a journal.

This practice joins that of continuous publication as a mechanism to accelerate the communication of research. Preprints share the originality of the publication of articles with journals and inhibit the use of double-blind procedures in evaluating manuscripts. The use of preprints is an option and choice of the authors, and it is up to journals to adapt their policies to accept the submission of manuscripts previously deposited on a preprint server recognized by the journal.

Given the need for a transparent communication process between authors and readers, the REM - International Engineering Journal specifies its prior publication policy:

  • All material previously published, in full or in part, in a journal, book or website by the authors is considered prior publication, and therefore, cannot be submitted for evaluation in REM - International Engineering Journal;
  • All content previously available in non-scientific journals, event annals, thesis, dissertations, monographs and research presented as a requirement for completion of the course by the authors is not considered prior publication. However, authors must declare the origin of the article at the time of submission in Research Context;
  • REM - International Engineering Journal accepts articles previously deposited on the SciELO Preprints, SocArXic and Zenodo preprint servers. Other servers will be analyzed on a case-by-case basis by the Editor-in-Chief. The text previously published in the preprint must be correctly cited at the time of submission in the Preprint.
  • We recommend that authors check whether they actually hold the copyright to the text in the cases described above.

Open Data

REM recommends that all research data be public in repositories at the time of submission or made public when the article is published. If authors choose to keep research data closed, it will be necessary to provide justification when submitting the manuscript, which will be analyzed by the Editor-in-Chief. The History of Historiography recommends that data repositories from institutions to which one of the authors is linked or other reliable data repositories be preferably used.

Publication Charge

Submission Fee

  • Every article submitted to REM must pay the submission fee in the amount of U$ 20 (twenty dollars).
  • The submission fee will not be refunded in case the REM guidelines are not followed or if the articles are rejected

Publication Fee (article processing charge)
Every article accepted for publication in accordance with the rules of REM, is charged a publication fee that must be paid. Publication charges can be paid in two ways:

  • Voluntary donation

When the fee is covered by a voluntary donation, REM has a charge of US$100.00 per published page. Some research groups, government agencies, companies, or individuals include funds for publication costs in their scientific budgets. Authors would benefit by obtaining publication charge coverage in this manner.

  • Personal payment

For authors who have not been able to obtain a voluntary donation, REM charges a publication fee per approved article of US$200.00 (two hundred dollars).

Attention:
The exchange rate (US$/real) adjustment will be made every three months.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

The conflict of interest may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts.

Authors
Authors must disclose any potential conflict of interest. When submitting the manuscript, authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the study. If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, the author(s) must inform this in a signed document attached to the submission platform. For more information see: Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest: Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest

If there is no type of conflict, the authors can insert at the end of the article: “The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest related to this study”.

Editors and reviewers:
The reviewer must inform the editors of any conflicts of interest that could influence the analysis of the manuscript and must declare that he or she is not qualified to review it. Reviewers must consider any type of conflict of interest before evaluating the manuscript.

Just like reviewers, editors should avoid making decisions about manuscripts that conflict with their own interests, such as those submitted by authors in their department, research collaborators or relatives.

Adoption of similarity checking software

The ScholarOne/SciELO system checks the similarity (Duplicate Submission Check), and it is up to the Associate Editor, after analyzing the facts, to accept, or not, the percentage shown by the software.

REM also adopts the Plagiarism Check, which is analyzed by the Chief Editor and Associate Editor

Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources

REM is preparing to adopt the use of artificial intelligence.

For more information see: Guide to the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools and Resources in Research Communication on SciELO.

Gender and Sex Issues

The REM editorial team, in addition to the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines described in Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER. The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of information about sex and gender in study design, data analysis, as well as the results and interpretation of findings. Furthermore, [name of publication] observes this gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board.

Ethics Committee

When applicable in special cases, authors must attach a statement of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the research.
