It was established in 1977 by the Centro de Estudos da Religião (CER) [Center for Religious Studies] and the Instituto de Estudos da Religião (ISER) [Institute for Religious Studies], and is currently edited by the latter. Religião & Sociedade is one of the leading academic publications in the field of Social Sciences, and since its foundation it has contributed to the exchange of research from various graduate programs and research centers both in Brazil and abroad on the topic of religion. Among the objectives of Religião & Sociedade, the following stand out:
Its abbreviated title is Relig. Soc., the form to be used in bibliographies, footnotes, and bibliographic references. Religião & Sociedade is committed to the principles of ethics and good practices of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) [National Council for Scientific and Technological Development], and SciELO. Its collection on SciELO gathers articles published since 2007. Open Science Compliance
Religião & Sociedade follows the guidelines of the Open Science movement, promoting collaborative, shared, and public practices in scientific practice. Ethics in Publication
Religião & Sociedade is committed to the principles of ethics and good practices set forth by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), and SciELO. Authors and reviewers are expected to adhere to the same commitment. Focus and Scope
Religião & Sociedade is a quarterly scientific journal with continuous publication dedicated to the theme of religion in all its possible relations with society. It publishes original research findings, conceptual and methodological reflections, as well as visual essays and reviews of recent works within its thematic scope. It is open to various approaches, trends, perspectives, and proposals for interpretation in the humanities, especially in the Social Sciences. In each issue, we seek to include articles from Brazilian and foreign researchers from different regionally diverse institutions. The three annual issues of Religião & Sociedade, made available in continuous publication mode, consist of flow articles, visual essays, and reviews of works recently published in Brazil and abroad. In some cases, they also include articles linked to thematic dossiers proposed by national and international researchers and announced through the journal’s communication channels. Religião & Sociedade accepts submissions in Portuguese, English, or Spanish in the following formats:

Preprints
Religião & Sociedade accepts the submission of preprinted articles on public platforms, such as SciELO Preprints. If the article is published in a preprint repository, this should be indicated at the time of submission. |
Manuscript Evaluation Policy
Received manuscripts undergo an initial screening by the Assistant Editor to assess formal adequacy to submission standards. Works meeting formal requirements are then reviewed by the Editorial Committee, which provides an initial assessment of relevance (desk review) to ascertain academic quality standards and alignment with the journal’s scope, objectives, and editorial policy/mission. Subsequently, manuscripts passing this initial stage undergo double-blind peer review. Ad hoc reviewers – experts in the article’s knowledge area – are invited for evaluation with no conflicts of interest of any kind. There are four possible outcomes in the second stage:
The journal will reject submissions if both reviewers indicate “revision and resubmission” or if at least one reviewer rejects the article, and the editorial staff deems the review appropriate. In case of consistent divergence between two reviews, the journal will resort to a third evaluator. If the article is approved, the author(s) must submit to Religião e Sociedade the final version of the text with changes defined by the editors based on previously issued reviews. Articles simultaneously under evaluation by another(other) journal(s) will not be forwarded to the aforementioned evaluation stages. Articles take up to two months to receive an initial evaluation from the editorial staff and, if necessary, to proceed to blind evaluation. On average, the total manuscript evaluation time is six months. Modifications made to articles, based on reviews and editorial comments, should be indicated with “track changes” or in a different color within the text for easy identification. Authors are also recommended to submit attached considerations directly to the editors presenting the modifications made and/or justifying suggestions that were not incorporated. Authors must submit the modified article within 30 days of receiving the editors’ request. Editorial decisions, as well as the arguments supporting them, are communicated through the submission platform and reiterated via e-mail. During the evaluation process, Religião & Sociedade offers reviewers the opportunity to communicate directly with the corresponding author, allowing them to decide whether or not to reveal their identities. At the time of submission, authors must attach the Open Science Compliance Form. The interval for publication in Religião & Sociedade is 24 months between the publication of one article and the submission of another by the same author or co-author. Those whose articles are published in Religião & Sociedade immediately become part of our reviewer board. This voluntary contribution is of fundamental importance for the continuity of scientific journals. Any appeals and challenges to the results of any stage of the evaluation process will be reviewed and responded to by the editorial staff within 30 days, in accordance with national and international codes of ethics and good practices. |
Open Data
In line with Open Science principles, we request that authors share the underlying data and materials at the time of submission or upon publication of the article. Exceptions may be made for legal and ethical reasons. Data sharing can be done in institutional repositories or certified repositories, such as those recommended by SciELO. Data sharing should be referenced in the text according to the Guidelines for research data citation (portuguese only). |
Fees
There are no fees for manuscript submission, evaluation, or publication. |
Policy on Conflict of Interest
Conflict of interest may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting the manuscript, authors are responsible for acknowledging and disclosing financial or other conflicts of interest that may have influenced the work. If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, the author(s) must inform it in a separate document signed and attached to the submission platform. For more information, see: Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest |
Adoption of Similarity Software
All articles approved in the first stage will undergo plagiarism and “self-plagiarism” or republication (publication of previously published material as new) testing using Copyleaks software. Works that do not meet the originality criterion will be automatically rejected. |
Author Contributions
Regarding authorship contribution, Religião & Sociedade adopts the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) taxonomy, which includes two minimum authorship criteria: a. Actively participate in the discussion of results; b. Review and approval of the final version of the work. |
Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources
Approved manuscripts are submitted to the Copyleaks software for plagiarism detection prior to publication. The journal may also use tools to detect content generated by artificial intelligence (AI), such as ZeroGPT, among others. The ethical use of AI is permitted, provided it is limited to basic tasks such as text revision and improvement. However, it is not recommended to use AI for analyses or reflections, as these must be the authors' own work. Authors must indicate in the manuscript if AI was used and will be fully responsible for the final content. |
Gender and Sex Issues
The editorial team of Religião & Sociedade, as well as the authors publishing in the journal, must always adhere to the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines. The SAGER guidelines provide a framework for reporting information on sex and gender in study design, data analysis, results, and interpretation of findings. Additionally, Religião & Sociedade follows a gender equity policy in the composition of its editorial board. Access the full SAGER guidelines in English and Portuguese. |

Manuscript Preparation
Submission Guidelines When submitting a manuscript, authors commit to not sending it to another journal during the evaluation process. Conversely, the journal does not accept works that are still under review in other journals. The journal also does not accept two simultaneous evaluations of the same author, understanding that submitting a new article while another has not been published or rejected constitutes simultaneity. 1. Original articles Original articles must be submitted only through the SciELO collection’s online system, in Word or compatible open format. The text may have between 7,000 and 10,000 words, including footnotes and bibliography, which should come at the end of the text. Notes should contain complementary and substantive information and cannot consist only of bibliographic references. The rules for bibliographic references are outlined below. The cover page should include: article title and abstract in Portuguese and English (between 80 and 120 words). There should be no authorship information in the document sent via the Scielo.com system. In the case of articles available on preprint servers, the author must inform the journal editors at the time of submission. Texts published only in proceedings of scientific events, in preliminary versions, are considered original articles. 2. Reviews and visual essays Critical Reviews may present recent works (up to five years), including academic or literary books, documentaries and ethnographic videos, photobooks, exhibitions, and other scientific and cultural productions stemming from original research in the fields of social sciences, humanities, and arts, related to the theme of religion in its multiple expressions and approaches. The connection and contribution of the analyzed work to the most recent debates in Religião & Sociedade should be indicated. Reviews may lead to critical discussions regarding the interpretation of facts, adopted methods, or proposed theoretical choices. To preserve textual clarity, it is recommended to gather critical comments in a specific section, after the abstract. Reviews containing allusive (unfounded) criticism and personal attacks will be disregarded. Based on the criteria indicated above, the evaluation may have three outcomes: “approved review,” “approved review with modifications,” and “rejected review” (without resubmission). The latter two outcomes will be communicated with a brief assessment. Authors are asked to provide a title for the review available in Portuguese and English. The bibliographic reference of the reviewed work should come at the beginning, following the rules for article submission: AUTHOR’S LAST NAME, first name. Title of the work. Place of publication: publisher, date, edition number if not the first, number of pages. For example, GEERTZ, Clifford. A Interpretação das Culturas. Rio de Janeiro: Guanabara Koogan, 1989, 325pp. Other works cited in the review should have their full references presented in a note at the end of the text. Visual Essays – including photography, ethnographic drawing, or visual arts – must result from detailed research and be connected to pertinent debates within the journal’s profile. Images (at 300 dpi) will be accompanied by text and, optionally, captions, presenting the essay’s conditions of elaboration, its poetics, and methodology. They should also have a title, abstract, and keywords in English. Submission requires authors to additionally submit a signed statement authorizing the publication of the images and taking responsibility for their use rights. The statement should be attached as a “supplementary document” at the time of submission. The text of Reviews and Visual Essays should have between 1,000 and 3,000 words, including bibliographic references and title. Submissions will be evaluated by the Editorial Board and the Editorial Committee, which may request a specific assessments if deemed pertinent. All contributions must be submitted through the Religião & Sociedade journal platform on: http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/rs 3. Interviews Interviews submitted to Religião & Sociedade should focus on classical or contemporary authors whose relevance in current times is attested by extensive citation within the scientific community, as determined by the journal’s editors’ interest. The material must be original and contain up to 10,000 words, including footnotes and bibliography. It is the author’s responsibility to request the necessary authorizations from the interviewees and send them to the journal in a timely manner for archiving. Attention: For flow articles and interviews, choose the “Articles” section. For dossiers, choose the “Section” item and direct it to the desired dossier. For reviews and visual essays, choose the “Section” item and then click on “Reviews and Visual Essays.” Proposal of Dossiers Thematic dossiers must follow the scope of the journal, focusing on the Social Sciences. Proposals should, whenever possible, encompass a theme that intersects with various religious fields. In cases where this criterion is not used, it is essential to provide a justification for the exceptional nature and relevance of the proposal. Proposers must be part of the journal’s academic community, meaning they are part of its Editorial Board, have published in Religião e Sociedade, and/or have acted as reviewers. Proposals for dossiers should be sent by e-mail to: religiaoesociedade@iser.org.br |
Article Submission Format
No additions or modifications will be allowed after the papers have been submitted for composition.

Digital Assets
Images, charts, tables, and other illustrations should be presented centered in the body of the text. Captions should be inserted below, in Times New Roman 10 font, single spacing, justified text. Also below, the source/authorship should be indicated, even if the illustration is created by the author themselves (e.g., Source: Prepared by the author). Titles should be placed above, in Times New Roman 12 font, centered, with the indication of the type of illustration and its numbering, followed by a colon and the description (e.g., Flowchart 1: Relationship between God and Man); each word of the title should start in uppercase. If there are photos where people are identified, it is necessary to explicitly state in a note the authorization for the image’s dissemination for academic purposes, except for images in the public domain. |
