ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Brief Background

Psicologia & Sociedade (Psychology & Society) is the journal of the Brazilian Association of Social Psychology. Founded in 1986, it publishes, in a continuous publication format, original texts that present research results, reports of experiences and discussions on topics relevant to the production of knowledge in social psychology and related areas, based on critical, creative and questioning theoretical stances, methodologies and analyses, particularly those of an interdisciplinary nature.

The abbreviation of its title is Psicol. Soc., that must be used in bibliographies, footnotes and references and bibliographical subtitles.

Open Access

This journal follows the open access model, allowing virtual access without restriction (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal.

Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants rights to third parties using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), allowing immediate free access to work and authorizing any user to read, download, distribute, print, research or link the full texts of the articles, trace them for indexation, pass them as data to software or use them for any other legal purpose.

Open Science Compliance

This journal follows the Gold Open Access model.

Following open science guidelines, Psicologia & Sociedade adopts a free access policy, the use of social network to disseminate published works, the continuous publication format, and encourages the use of preprint repositories as a way to contribute to accelerate research communication. The journal encourages authors to make available all contents related to the text of the manuscript (data, program codes and other materials) from submission or at the time of publication, except in cases that there are legal and ethical issues involved. Such data may be published in the work itself or made available in open online repositories, and this information must be indicated and referenced in the manuscript. These practices facilitate the evaluation of articles and the use of collected data for new analyses. The journal recommends the publication of preprint articles on public platforms, such as SciELO Preprints and Psyarxiv.

Psicologia & Sociedade offers to the authors and reviewers options to open the peer evaluation process, with or without identification of their names. Authorizations for the disclosure of the names may be given by both parties at the time of submission and evaluation, respectively, through the completion of the Open Science Compliance Form and the evaluation form, both made available on the Scielo Submission platform.

The contribution of the persons responsible for the editorial will be properly credited in the body of the published articles.

Ethics in Publication

In the letter of submission, authors must declare that all ethical guidelines concerning integrity in the scientific activities carried out in the course of research have been respected. The observance of good research ethics in the research is the responsibility of the author, in particular by the resolutions of the National Research Ethics Commission (CONEP).

Psicologia & Sociedade has its practices supported by Scielo's ethics codes that can be found in the “Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publishing”; in the “Principles of Transparency and Good Practices in Academic Publications” recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics – COPE; in the principles of the Directory of Open Access Journals – DOAJ; and in the principles of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA).

Publishing

Editorial practices and the relationship between editors and authors and reviewers are supported by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Guide to Editors. Every editorial decision is based on originality, contribution, relevance, thematic validity, general structure and compliance with editorial policies to meet the scope of the journal.

Evaluation

The evaluation is based on the merit of the work, not influenced, positively or negatively, by personal or financial reasons or prejudice of any kind.

Submissions and review details may be opened or kept confidential.

The reviewer must confirm and inform the editorial board of any potential conflict of interest before accepting the review or during the review process. In these cases, the manuscript will be sent to another reviewer.

If the reviewer finds any irregularity in the article being evaluated, they must notify the editorial board. Examples of possible irregularities are: identification of plagiarism; fabrication and/or falsification of results; redundant publication.

Opinions that are not sufficiently justified will not be accepted.

Authorship

The indication of authorship in a scientific article, following the COPE Guide to Authors applies only to those who:

a) contribute intellectually, directly and substantially to the design of the research/article (acquisition, analysis or interpretation of the data presented);

b) participate in the construction of preliminary versions or critical review of the content of the article;

c) are responsible for the authorship in order to guarantee the accuracy and integrity of the article.

Authors must declare any conflict of interest, when applicable, using the Comments to the editor field during the submission process.

Focus and Scope

Psicologia & Sociedade publishes original articles that present research results, reports of experiences and discussions on topics relevant to the production of knowledge in social psychology, from a critical, creative, questioning and interdisciplinary stance.

Respecting the tradition of our journal, which is consolidated by the resistance to individualistic forms and by the use of experimental approaches to research in social psychology, Psicologia & Sociedade publishes texts that: 1) critically engage with the literature and contemporary debates in relation to the topic addressed and the field of study in social psychology (within the scope of the human and social sciences) and not merely list texts and authors; 2) are explicitly analytical in nature, with solid arguments and not just a description of procedures, results and analyses and 3) present unequivocal contribution of the manuscript to the field of study covered by the text under consideration, and to the theoretical field it addresses.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

Psicologia & Sociedade accepts the publication of preprints, aiming to accelerate the communication of research results. Preprint is defined as a manuscript that is ready for submission to a journal and is deposited on reliable preprint servers prior to or in parallel with submission to a journal.

The use of preprint is optional for authors. When applicable, the submission of the article to the journal must be accompanied by the completed Open Science Compliance Form, informing the name of the preprint server and the DOI assigned to the document.

Preprints share with journals the originality in publication and imply the inhibition of the manuscripts’ double-blind evaluation process. The journal recommends publishing preprint articles on public platforms such as SciELO Preprints and Psyarxiv

Peer Review Process

Editorial flow and peer review

It is a condition for publication of the manuscript submitted to this journal that it has not been published and is not simultaneously submitted to another media.

The manuscript evaluation process is carried out in 2 (two) stages, as illustrated and described below:

1st evaluation stage – adequacy to standards

After submission, manuscripts are evaluated for compliance with the standards specified herein (Instructions for Authors). At this stage, conducted by the team comprising the Editors and Editorial Advisors, all the items specified for preparing the manuscript are conferred, as well as the full completion of the submission metadata. In the event of errors, the authors will be notified and the submission will be archived. Considering that it is the responsibility of the authors to verify the compliance with the norms, in case of rejected manuscript, the editorial board reserves the right not to identify, at this stage of the evaluation, the item (or items) that is in disagreement with the journal’s rules.

2nd evaluation stage – peer review

At this stage, the Editorial Board initially evaluate the relevance of the manuscript for the field of Social Psychology, its suitability for the scope of the journal and the overall quality of the text approved in the first stage.

Manuscripts approved at this stage are then monitored by the Editorial Board of Psicologia & Sociedade, which is responsible for designating reviewers. Submissions are forwarded for peer review, which may occur through direct interaction between authors and reviewers, as long as they agree with this procedure. Authorizations for disclosure of names may be given by authors when filling the Open Science Compliance Form and by the reviewers in the Evaluation Form.

The opinions issued during the evaluation contain justifications that may suggest approval for publication without changes, approval for publication with recommendations for changes, or non-publication recommendation. The Editorial Board, after reviewing revised versions, makes the final decisions on the manuscripts, including the need for further revisions. Authors are kept informed of the progress of their manuscript at all stages. The Editorial Board reserves the right to make minor modifications in the text to speed up the process.

Editorial production

At this stage of the editorial process, the texts undergo technical treatment involving anti-plagiarism verification, review of technical and spelling standards, electronic publishing and XML preparation. This process is coordinated by the Managing Editor and carried out by a technical team hired for this purpose.
The contribution of the Editorial Board and the Editorial Advisory Board will be credited in the body of the published articles.

All documents published in the SciELO Brasil Collection will be assigned an Object Digital Identifier (DOI), a globally recognized unique and persistent document identifier. Multilingual versions of the same article are identified as distinct communication objects and each receive their own DOI identifier.

Open Data

Psicologia & Sociedade encourages the sharing of primary data, codes and other materials produced in research and which are usually underlying submitted manuscripts. This information may be made available both at the time of submission and at the time of publication, with the aim of contributing to the evaluation of the manuscript, as well as to the preservation and reuse of data from research approved for publication. Legal and ethical impediments may justify the omission of such materials, and their availability (or not) must be indicated in the Open Science Compliance Form that must included in the submission. SciELO provides a List of recommended repositories for depositing research data, including SciELO Data, as well as a Research data citation guide and the TOP Guide to promote openness, transparency and reproductibility of research.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

Conflicts of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic or financial in nature. Conflicts of interest can occur when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting the manuscript, the responsible persons must acknowledge and disclose any financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, this must be reported in the appropriate field (Comments to the Editor) on the submission platform. For more information, see: Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest

Adoption of Similarity Software

Psicologia & Sociedade uses Turnitin's Originality software for plagiarism verification. Manuscripts are verified by sampling, during the editing stage or whenever indicated by section editors or reviewers.

A similarity of up to 30% (in the literal copy) of the text is considered acceptable. If a higher percentage is found, the Editorial team will evaluate the possibility of sending a notification to the authors so that a review can be carried out in order to adapt the manuscript.

Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources

Psicologia & Sociedade does not use artificial intelligence tools, but accepts articles that have used these tools as long as they are duly identified in accordance to the guidelines set out in the Guide to the use of Artificial Intelligence tools and resources in research communication on the SciELO network.

Gender and Sex Issues

Psicologia & Sociedade follows the Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER guidelines, including practicing the gender equity policy in the formation of our Editorial Board. The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of information about sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and results and interpretation of findings.

Every scientific journal defines its focus, mission and editorial line. Therefore, before continuing to read about the rules and technical guidelines for submitting texts to our journal, please read the following information carefully.

1. Focus and scope

If you consider that your proposal meets the required criteria (see Focus and scope in “About the journal” section), please proceed, knowing that our editorial process will only begin if the manuscript is submitted in strict compliance with the guidelines established in this document.

Considering that verification of the adequacy of the standards is the author’s responsibility, in cases of rejected manuscripts, the Editorial Board reserves the right not to identify, at this stage of the evaluation, the item (or items) that the text is in disagreement with the journal’s rules.

2. Online submission

The texts must be submitted via Scielo Submission system, through the website:
www.scielo.br/psoc

To this end, it is necessary to confirm (or perform) your registration in:
http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/psoc/login

3. Maximum number of submissions and annual publications

Submissions: maximum 2 per year, whether as an author or coauthor. In addition, the submission of another manuscript will not be allowed, while the first is under evaluation, unless it is in different authorial condition (coauthorship).

Publications: maximum 1 per year (as author), with the possibility of 1 more (as coauthor).

4. Periodicity of publication

Psicologia & Sociedade adopts the modality of continuous publication. Since 2017, it has published only one volume per year, which is increased with new articles as they are evaluated, approved and edited in that year.

5. Language

Submissions of texts in Portuguese, Spanish or English are accepted, but communication between editors and authors will preferably be in Portuguese.

6. Originality

Submitted texts must be original and unpublished, therefore not having been published in any format or submitted to any other journals.

7. General rules for writing

Psicologia & Sociedade adopts, in general terms, the APA publication standards: “Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition, 2019)”, except for some adaptations properly informed on this page.

8. File type

Documents for submission must be in DOC or DOCX format.

9. Text modalities

Our journal welcomes the following text modalities:

Articles, which can be of three types:

Research reports: original research reports that are based on systematic and complete investigations, in which are presented not only a theoretical framework and the thorough description of procedures (collection and analysis) and results, but also dense analyzes that dialogue with the concepts and literature presented, producing contributions and questioning existing approaches, as well as suggesting topics and/or approaches for future research. Special attention should be paid to ethical care in research with human beings, which must be explicitly presented.

Critical literature reviews: critical and opportune analysis of a comprehensive body of research regarding matters of interest to the development of Social Psychology. This must not be a mere literature review, but a systematic and comprehensive study that has bibliographic production as its object of study. Following the model of a “state of the art”, this text must present a theoretical framework, a thorough description of procedures and dense analyses.

Theoretical studies: texts, in essay format, that present substantial and effectively innovative contributions to the development of theoretical concepts or approaches. It must present not only contrasts between ideas and arguments from other texts, but an original contribution, based on the presentation of a thesis/statement and arguments.

Interviews: interviews that were conducted by the authors with researchers, recognized authorities in the academic field and other personalities that contribute to the debate of Social Psychology. The interviews must include the name of the interviewees and interviewers and a brief introduction (maximum 340 words). As a supplementary document, a digitalized version of the interviewee’s formal authorization, in which they express their consent to the publication of the material, must be included in the submission.

Experience reports: Texts that report and discuss professional or training experience in Social Psychology and that present an effective academic, scientific, social and/or professional practice contribution, regarding their actions and ethics.  A conceptual framework, a description of procedures and strategies, as well as dense analyses that demonstrate substantial contributions to the field of Social Psychology must be presented.

Book reviews: critical review of national works (published up to 2 years before the submission of the review) or foreign works (published up to 5 years before the submission of the review), in which the characteristics of the work, potential uses and contributions to the field of Social Psychology are presented. In the case of reviews, they must contain a maximum of 2 authors.

Psicologia & Sociedade accepts the publication of preprintarticles(see definition in the Editorial policy), deposited on reliable servers before or in parallel to submission.

When applicable, the Open Science Compliance Form must be filled when submitting the article.

10. Dimension of manuscripts by modality

The texts (including resumo, abstract, resumen, figures, tables, annexes and references, besides the body text) must have the following dimensions:

  • Articles and interviews: 27.000 to 45.000 characters (including spaces) and the maximum of 5 illustrations (figures, tables or other).
  • Experience reports: 18.000 to 27.000 characters (including spaces) and the maximum of 5 illustrations (figures, tables or other).
  • Book reviews: 6.000 to 18.000 characters (including spaces), and no illustrations.

11. Letter of authorship

Submission must include a Letter of Authorship, in PDF or JPEG format, duly signed by all authors. The file must be uploaded in the second step of submission (2. Manuscript transfer/Submission files) immediately after uploading the main text). Failure to include this letter, when submitting the text to the SciELO Platform, will result in the immediate rejection and archiving of the proposal. This letter must state:

12. Metadata

Metadata is information regarding the manuscript, requested at the time of submission, that must be filled in specific fields of the Submission Platform:

  • Prefix (For example: One, A, Some, The etc.);
  • Title;
  • Subtitle (if there is);
  • Abstract;
  • Title, abstract and keywords must also be filled in the English and Spanish languages when the language of the text is different from these.
  • Contribution - authors and coauthors (includes name, contact email, institution, ORCID identification and biography summary). For more information about ORCID, please access: https://orcid.org/
  • Development agencies (include development type and process number and/or public notice)

Name of the authors/contributors: when the surname is compound, create clear identification [capital letters, bold and/or hyphen])

This information must be filled correctly and completely, otherwise the submission may be rejected.

13. Non identification of the author

If the author does not choose to disclose their identity (see Editorial policy), it is essential that the material does not contain any form of identification of the authorship, which includes identified references to previous works by the author of the manuscript and their institutional tie (when they point to the authorship of the manuscript), as well as information contained in the file properties. Therefore, the following measures must be taken in relation to the text and file properties:

  • Initial pages and notes: omit your name and that of your institution on the title page, as well as in headers, footers and notes.
  • Institutional information on methodological descriptions that may identify authorship must also be removed, using, for example, the expressions “University XXX”; “at School XXX”.
  • Multiple self-citations in the body text, if they identify the authorship, must come with the word “Author (year of publication)”. In the References section, they must appear at the beginning of the list – and not in alphabetical sequence – with the following information: “Author (year of publication) – to include reference after peer review”.
  • Acknowledgments: references must not be made, in the body text or in notes, to colleagues or institutional affiliations that could also facilitate the identification of the authorship. In case of acceptance of the manuscript for publication, this information may be included in the revision stage.
  • Funding notice, ethics committee protocol number and similar documents: must not be included in the text, only in the Letter of Authorship and metadata, as they enable the recognition of authorship.
  • File properties can identify authorship, so they need to be removed. Ways to to it may vary depending on the version of your text editor software. If you use Microsoft Word, go to the "File" menu, where the author's name must be removed in "Document properties". In your text editor's “help” tool, look for “Properties” or “Inspect document” and follow the instructions to remove personal information from the file.

14. Parts of the manuscript

The parts of the manuscript must be presented in the following order:

a) Presentation: a presentation must be included in the first page, preceding the manuscript, without identification of authorship, with a brief text (maximum of 3,500 characters, that will not be accounted for the total of the article) in which three questions are answered:

    • What is the relationship of the text submitted with the field of study of Social Psychology?
    • What does this text present as original and specific in relation to other productions on the same theme?
    • Why was the journal Psicologia & Sociedade chosen for this submission?

b) Original title (maximum of 14 words) and compatible titles in Spanish and Portuguese.

c) Abstracts (they must be clear, easily readable and provide an excellent comprehensive summary of the article (up to 150 words in Portuguese, Spanish and English) formatted in single paragraphs, and preceded by the title “Abstract”. In case of submission of book review and interview, the summary is not required.

d) Keywords: (5 words), arranged just below each abstract, started by capital letters and separated by semicolon (;), full stop. At least 3 of these words must be derived from the base of Descriptors in Health Sciences (DeCS)

e) Body text: Body text sections must be continuous, they must NOT start on a new page each.

15. Formatting the manuscripts

Since the text size is calculated based on the number of characters, it is not necessary to worry about page margins or line spacing configurations, however, some aspects must be observed carefully:

  • Font: the text must be formatted using Times New Roman font, size 12.
  • Numbering: the pages must be numbered (upper right corner) from the first page (where the manuscript presentation is included) in order to facilitate the identification of any modifications requested by the reviewers.
  • Section titles: they must appear in bold and only the first letter must be capitalized. They must be identified with simple numbering (1, 2, 3...) and must not be followed by full stop.
  • Subtitles: subtitles must be left-aligned, in bold, with the first letter capitalized. They must be identified with hierarchical numbering by level (1.1; 1.1.1…) and must not be followed by full stop.
  • Other subdivisions: a maximum of three levels of subtitles is recommended, however, if necessary, use numbers and letters (1.1.1.a).
  • Body text: all text must be left-aligned.
  • Paragraphs: In the first line of all paragraphs, there must be an indent (Tab = 1,25cm).
  • Hyperlink: all “URL” addresses (links to the internet) in the text must be active and lead directly to the cited document (e.g.: www.scielo.br/psoc).
  • Underlining, italics and bold: avoid underlining. Use italics for words or expressions that constitute “foreignisms”, such as locus etc., and bold for words you wish to highlight.
  • Latin abbreviations: use Latin abbreviations only in texts enclosed in parentheses; in texts without parenthesis, use words from the main language of the text: cf. = compare; i.e. = that is; e.g. = for example; viz. = in other words; etc. = and other similar things; vs. = versus.
  • Notes: must be avoided whenever possible. However, if there is no other possibility, they must be formatted as end-notes (and not as footnotes), indicated by Arabic numerals and configured so that their contents appear immediately after the body text and before the References sections.

16. Gender inflection

Recognizing the relevance of feminist studies and the production of knowledge about gender and sexuality, Psicologia & Sociedade accepts any form of gender inflection (such as they, @, x etc.), except the adoption of the generic masculine.

17. Citations

Citations of works must be made in the body text by identifying the authors and/or institutions, followed by the year of publication.

  • Year of citation: in case of translated works or those considered classic, it must be cited as follows: Author (year of the original edition/year of the publication consulted).
  • Names and surnames: When they are cited in the text (not in parentheses), at least in the first time, the authors must be appointed by their first name, followed by the surname.
  • Direct citation: in addition to the year of publication, the page where the excerpt can be found in the consulted work must be provided. The direct citation must be exactly the same as the original publication, even if there are errors in the cited version. In these cases, the expression [sic] must be added immediately after the error.

- In a direct citation, the omission of sections of an original source must be indicated by suspension points without parentheses. Ex: “The sociology of everyday life emphasized the articulations between the micro and macro-social dimensions, shifting their focus... to situations of interaction” (Pais, 2003, p. 75).
- The insertion of terms or excerpts, such as comments or observations by the author, must be placed in square brackets.
- The emphasis on one or more words, within the citation or excerpt, must be done with bold font, followed by [emphasis added].
- Citations with less than 40 words must be incorporated in the paragraph of the text, between quotation marks.
- Citations with more than 40 words must appear without quotation marks in a paragraph in block format, reached 1.25cm from the left margin.
- Citations with more than 500 words, reproduction of one or more illustrations (figures, tables or other) must have written permission of the copyright holder of the original work for reproduction. The permission obtained must be addressed to the author of the work and be attached to the submission as a supplementary document. Secondarily obtained rights will not be passed on under any circumstances.

  • Article with 2 authors: the names of the 2 authors must be indicated whenever the article is cited.
  • Article with 3 to 5 authors: indicate all the authors in the first citation; from the second onward use the surname of the first author followed by "et al.".
  • Article with six or more authors: name only the first author, followed by "et al.". However, in the Reference section, the names of all authors must be indicated.
  • Secondary citation: It is the citation of an article discussed in another publication consulted, without the original being used. For example: "Piaget (1932, cited by Flavell, 1996)...". In the Reference section, cite only the work consulted (in this case, Flavell, 1996). DO NOT use the terms apud, op. cit, id., ibidem, and others. They are not part of the APA standards.

18. Verification of Guidelines for Submission

  • Submission of texts in any category will only be possible upon the confirmation by the author, through the SciELO Submission system, that ALL established conditions are met.
  • Failure to comply with ANY of the items is sufficient for initial rejection during the first stage of evaluation, which is why we recommend to the authors to make a thorough review of their texts before submission. Please note that manuscripts rejected twice for failure to meet these requirements will not be accepted again.

19. Copyright

  • Submission of texts implies the immediate and free transfer of publication rights to the journal Psicologia & Sociedade, which will have the exclusive right to publish them first-hand. The author will, however, continue to hold the copyright for subsequent publications. In the event of republication of articles in other media, the first publication in Psicologia & Sociedade should be mentioned.
  • Psicologia & Sociedade is published under Open Access model, being therefore free for reading, sharing and adaptation provided that the Creative Commons CC-BY 4.0 license terms are observed.

20. Authors are potential reviewers

Please note that the peer review process depends on the collaboration of reviewers who are available to assess submitted manuscripts. Therefore, when submitting an article to the journal, authors and coauthors with a doctoral degree (completed or in progress), are automatically registered in our reviewer database, updating and expanding our databases.

Digital assets

  • All tables, figures (graphs, charts, etc.) and Annexes must be placed after References section and indicated throughout the text, in the suggested location (e.g. “Insert Figure 1”);
  • During the submission process, images must be transferred as supplementary files: one file per element, in high quality (minimum resolution of 300 dpi) and JPG or PNG format, and the suggested location  for their insertion must also be indicated throughout the text.
  • These elements must be numbered, have a title and captions, always informing the source of the data or specifying that they are the author’s own productions.
  • Expressions such as "the table above" or "the figure below" must not be used, as their location may be changed during the layout process.
  • The words “Figure”, “Table” and “Annex” must always be written with the first letter capitalized and accompanied by the respective numbers (figures and tables) or letters (Annexes).
  • Charts and graphs are also considered “figures”.

Citations and References

All (and only) the works cited in the text must be listed in the References section.

  • Unpublished works:  must not be included in the References section, but in "Notes". This includes papers presented in conferences that have not been published.
  • Order: texts must be listed in alphabetical order, by author’s surname. In cases of reference to multiple studies by the same author, chronological order should be used, that is, from the oldest to the latest study. Author’s names must NOT be replaced by dashes or hyphens.
  • Names and surnames: in the list of bibliographic references, the first names of the authors must always appear and not just their initials.
  • Authorship: in text publications, the authorship is evident. In other cases, the authorship must be informed as follows:
    - Movie picture = Director
    -  TV Series = Executive Producer
    - TV Series episode = Writer and director of the episode
    - Podcast = Host or hostess or Executive Producer
    - Podcast episode = Host or hostess of the episode
    - Webinar = Coordinator of the session
    - Online Streaming Video: person or group which uploaded the video
    - Photograph: photographer
