Brief Background
Mediações – Revista de Ciências Sociais is a rolling publication journal which publishes three issues a year linked to the Department of Social Sciences (DCS/UEL), the Graduate Program in Social Sciences (nowadays PPGSOC-UEL), and the Specialization in the Teaching of Sociology at the State University of Londrina. With twenty-eight years of uninterrupted publication (it was founded in 1996 under ISSN 1414-0543 – printed), Mediações is dedicated to the mission of disseminating high-quality scientific content produced by national and international researchers in the fields of Social Sciences and related areas. To this end, in addition to three thematic dossiers a year, selected through a public call, Mediações has a free section for articles, both operating as rolling publication, as well as reviews that are only published on our website. Includes a free articles section and a review section, both operating on a rolling submission basis. The journal publishes original articles (preferably from research funded by national and local funding agencies), as well as preprints, that are initially screened by Section Editors and undergo at least two double-blind and/or open reviews by specialists. Our Editorial Board, regulated by Internal Regulations, consists of nine scholar-researchers from the three areas of Social Sciences, with three from UEL and six external advisors from other national and/or international institutions. Our Scientific Advisory Board is composed of nationally and internationally recognized scientists. In 2022, it received an A4 rating in Sociology, its primary field (Qualis-Capes: 2017-2020). Since 2009, the journal has been available in electronic format (ISSN 2176-6665). It is currently funded by PPGSOC/UEL and CNPq. |
Open Science Compliance
Since 1996, Mediações has provided open access to all of its content, following the principle of making the results of peer-reviewed scientific research freely available to the public. This aims to promote global exchange of scientific knowledge and enhance the democratization of knowledge. Mediações adheres to the fundamental principles of open access scientific production, offering digital access (under a Creative Commons CC-BY license) to its authors and users, providing public, free, and permanent access to all published volumes. Additionally, the journal fully grants copyright ownership to its authors, thus characterizing itself as a Diamond Open Access (Diamond OA) journal. By subscribing to the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) principles, Mediações ensures that authors and users can read, download, search, print, copy, and/or link to the full texts of published articles. They can also use them for other legal purposes, without any additional cost to any party and without the need to request prior permission from the editor or authors, as long as the terms of the Creative Commons license adopted by the journal are respected. The journal also encourages authors to make their materials and databases used in manuscripts available to promote reference and dissemination of research materials, as well as combat misconduct related to data fabrication and falsification. Mediações offers authors and reviewers the option of open evaluations and commits to promoting the FAIR Principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) and the guidelines regarding sex and gender equity in research (Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER), as well as adopting the DEIA Principles (diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility) throughout the scientific communication workflow, as outlined by SciELO (2024, p. 7) and COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) – paramount mechanisms and instruments for promoting open science and its practices. In accordance with the guidelines of open science, Mediações accepts and encourages, without embargo, the submission of articles that have been previously submitted, accepted, or published in an institutional repository or another preprint reliable repository chosen by the authors (such as SciELO Preprints, EmeRI, Advance – SAGE Pub e OSFPreprints – Center of Open Science, etc). Mediações features the default theme of OJS that complies with the OJS 3.3+ Default Theme Accessibility Statement and follows the general principles for creating accessible content, achieving high levels of overall readability for its texts and editorial policies using tools like the Hemingway app, which aids in assessing writing complexity. The journal's editorial team also fill the metadata in accordance with the Coalition Publica's metadata best practices guide, thereby contributing to providing users of software applications and adaptive technologies with essential information about the published document. |
Ethics in Publication
Mediações is a journal committed to the ethical principles of research and publication. It subscribes to the principles and practices outlined in the Core Practices (2017) of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), through the adoption of various instruments for regulating and controlling good editorial practices. It requires its authors to include a document specifying the exact contribution of each party, the availability of data and information used, among other commitments to ethical and quality scientific production. The publication of articles presenting research results involving human subjects is subject to compliance with the ethical principles outlined in the Declaration of Helsinki (1964, revised in 1975, 1983, 1989, 1996, 2000, and 2008) by the World Medical Association. When submitting articles, authors ensure that their research followed the ethical principles prescribed for their field of knowledge, meeting all the requirements specified by the specific legislation in force in the country where the research was conducted. The submission of a Supplementary Document of Co-Authorship is mandatory for articles with more than one author. A copy of the research ethics committee's approval document should be attached, whenever applicable, as a supplementary document in the submission process. In accordance with the guidelines for ethical conduct in scientific publication, Mediações subscribes to and adopts specific rules and procedures that must be followed by all those involved in the process of submission, evaluation, editing, and publication of articles in the journal: a) It is the duty of the Editor-in-Chief and Section Editors to ensure strict compliance with the rules outlined in the Modalities, Processes, and Peer Review Policies, as well as other editorial policies endorsed by Mediações. They must ensure the fairness of the evaluation procedures, manage and mediate any conflicts between parties involved in an impartial and transparent manner, and adequately fulfill their tasks and responsibilities outlined in Articles 10 to 13 of Mediações Internal Regulation (2023). b) It is the duty of reviewers, whose editorial decisions are final in Mediações, to observe all rules, norms, and procedures specified in the journal's editorial policy and specific recommendations for reviewers. They must adhere to the deadlines and conditions proposed by the journal, ensuring confidentiality of reviewed documents and the quality and integrity of approved research for publication. c) It is the duty of authors to observe all rules, norms, and procedures specified in the editorial policy of Mediações, comply with the ethical and documentary requirements outlined by the journal (supplementary documents, accurate completion of data and metadata, etc.), and guarantee the originality and uniqueness of the submitted manuscript. |
Focus and Scope
Created in 1996 and published without interruption since then, Mediações is currently a rolling publication journal of the Graduate Program in Sociology at the State University of Londrina (PPGSOC-UEL), focused on debates about relevant and/or current topics in the Social and Human Sciences (thematic coverage classification by CAPES: 70000000 and 70200009). Since its inception, Mediações has maintained the characteristic of being a journal in Social Sciences, ensuring that the three areas of knowledge involved in these fields—Anthropology, Political Science, and Sociology—are always adequately represented, both in the published articles and in its Editorial Board. It also strives to adhere as much as possible to principles of social justice (gender, race, etc.) and internationalization. Mediações is also committed to the rule of non-endogeneity: its current Internal Regulation stipulate that one-third of section editors must be composed of in-house researchers, while two-thirds must necessarily belong to other Brazilian and/or foreign institutions of higher education. Mediações publishes three thematic dossiers per year, selected through a public call for dossier proposals, widely disseminated both within and outside the country. Each published dossier includes a fixed number of articles submitted to dossiers, with defined deadlines for submissions announced at least six months in advance, as well as a free section for articles and another for reviews, both on a rolling submission basis. Mediações must be original and can be submitted in Portuguese, English, or Spanish. Reviews are conducted by at least two ad hoc reviewers who are specialists in the topic. In accordance with the principles of Open Science, Mediações allows authors to submit preprints with no embargo and offers reviewers the option between Double-Blind Review and Open Peer Review. |
Digital Preservation
Mediações uses the PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN), which is part of the Rede de Serviços de Preservação Digital Cariniana (IBICT), responsible for preserving Open Journal System journals in the country. It also utilizes, alternatively, the LOCKSS and CLOCKSS system, which allows for the creation and distribution of permanent files among libraries, with the aim of preserving and/or restoring documents. The journal is also housed within the Portal de Periódicos da UEL, and integrates databases such as Sherpa/RoMEO, Diadorim, ROAD, among others. It is registered on the ISSN portal (https://portal.issn.org/resource/ISSN/2176-6665) and, since 2024, follows the standards defined in the Digital Preservation Policy of the SciELO Programme. |

Preprints
In accordance with the guidelines of open science, Mediações accepts and encourages, without embargo, the submission of articles that have been previously submitted, accepted, or published in an institutional repository or another reliable preprint repository chosen by the authors (such as SciELO Preprints, EmeRI, Advance – SAGE Pub e OSFPreprints – Center of Open Science, etc). Authors are responsible for ensuring that the content deposited on preprint servers complies with the journal’s editorial policies and ethical guidelines, particularly regarding originality, novelty, and academic integrity. Under no circumstances may the submitted content have been submitted to and/or accepted for publication in another scientific journal. During the submission process, authors must explicitly declare that the manuscript has been previously made available as a preprint, specifying the server used and the corresponding DOI number, if applicable. Failure to provide this information may result in the manuscript being rejected during the initial screening. If the article is accepted and published in Mediações, the authors must update the preprint record in the server, providing the complete reference for the final publication, including the DOI of the version published in Mediações. |
Peer Review Process
Articles submitted to dossiers, and the rolling submission process initially undergo a screening stage, in which the organizers or section editors conduct a first evaluation of the material, focusing primarily on the article’s alignment with the dossier or the journal’s editorial line. After the screening of the manuscripts, the texts are sent to reviewers, who provide three possible responses regarding the publication: the article may be accepted without the need for changes, accepted with mandatory revisions, or rejected. If the reviewers have indicated on the Evaluation Form that they wish to see the revised version, the article is sent back to them for a final editorial decision; if they have indicated they do not wish to review the revised version, the final editorial decision is made by the organizers or section editors, who will check whether the required revisions have been satisfactorily addressed. In line with Open Science principles, Mediações offers both authors and reviewers the option of open or double-blind peer review. If the authors opt for open peer review, the review request is sent to reviewers without anonymization; if they choose double-blind review, the submission is anonymized accordingly. Likewise, reviewers can, when filling out the Evaluation Form, choose open peer review, disclosing their name: (i) either during the review process, so that their identification will be open at all stages of the process, or (ii) only after the article is published, if accepted, in which case the reviewer’s name will appear on the last page of the published article, next to the name of the section editor or organizer. If the reviewer chooses not to disclose their identity at any stage, the name of the individuals responsible for the evaluations (organizers or section editors) will be published on the last page of the article. Mediações also consults its reviewers about the publication of their review reports if the article is approved for publication. If they agree to the publication, the reviews are made available online, alongside the .pdf and .xml versions of the article. |
Open Data
Mediações requests that, when an article relies on a large dataset that cannot be fully accommodated within the text, the authors ensure access to the complete metadata, describe the variables, collection methodology, and other relevant information for the interpretation and reuse of the data. This should be done by including hyperlinks in the text that direct readers to these details, as indicated by SciELO. The link to the research data must be inserted at the end of the article so that it is available to the public. When this is not possible, it will be necessary to discuss suitable solutions in advance with the section editors responsible for the evaluation, so that the open data policies supported by SciELO can be complied with. Mediações also supports the broad dissemination and unrestricted access to scientific research. In line with the best practices in scientific publishing, our repository policy allows and encourages the deposit of all manuscript versions (preprint, postprint, and published) in trusted open-access repositories without restrictions or embargo. Mediações is committed to ensuring and strengthening open access, digital preservation, and the visibility of its academic content, ensuring that the published scientific knowledge is widely available to the academic community and the public. The journal maintains its own digital repository, hosted on the UEL Journals Portal, where all published articles are stored and made available. This repository guarantees free, permanent open access to the entire scientific collection of Mediações, promoting the long-term preservation of published content. Mediações collaborates with external repositories and databases to expand the dissemination of its content, enabling integration with institutional, national, and international repositories. To facilitate collecting and indexing by other academic research platforms, Mediações repository is compatible with the OAI-PMH protocol. Mediações recommends authors to deposit their materials in SciELO repository or other repositories recommended by SciELO. |
Fees
Mediações does not change authors any fees or request any financial contributions for submission, evaluation and publication of articles or any other type of text that may be published. The journal adheres to the principle that making scientific knowledge freely available to the public promotes greater global democratization of knowledge. |
Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy
Mediações is a journal committed to ethical practices in scientific publishing and research integrity, striving to promote transparency, responsibility, and respect for ethical standards in the academic environment. It seeks to ensure that research is conducted ethically, honestly, and transparently by authors, avoiding any form of plagiarism or data manipulation, thus guaranteeing scientific integrity. Beyond the more general Ethical Principles with which Mediações is committed, our policy aims to comply with internationally recognized best practices and ethical guidelines, including those adopted by SciELO. Mediações considers plagiarism and self-plagiarism, data falsification (whether through manipulation and/or fabrication of data and research results), false authorship, deviation from the peer review process (exerting undue influence over the review and publication of articles), removal of data, intentionally misleading citation, and other similar unethical practices to fall within the category of scientific misconduct. It encourages the reporting of such misconduct and urges anyone aware of unethical behavior to contact the editorial team via email at mediacoes@uel.br; it also ensures that all reports will be investigated rigorously and treated with the utmost confidentiality. Mediações also endorses the publication of errata and corrections: when a substantial error that compromises the validity of an article is detected in a work published by the journal, it commits to issuing an erratum to correct the scientific record. Authors must notify the journal immediately upon discovering any error that may impact the validity of the work. The erratum will be published clearly, with a proper description of the error and the corrections made, following the errata registration and publication guidelines recommended by SciELO. Mediações reserves the right to retract articles that do not meet accepted and recognized ethical and scientific standards. Causes for retraction include plagiarism and self-plagiarism, falsification and/or manipulation of data or results, authorship manipulation, violation of ethical standards, inaccurate results, fraudulent evaluation, conflicts of interest, removed or irreproducible data, among other practices that compromise the scientific integrity of the publication. Also in this regard, Mediações subscribes to SciELO's guidelines for registering and publishing retractions. (text developed through consultation with ChatGPT [ChatGPT, 2024]) |
Policy on Conflict of Interest
Conflicts of interest may be personal, academic, political, professional, commercial, financial, and so on. They may occur when authors, section editors or reviewers have interests that can influence and/or interfere in the elaboration or evaluation of the manuscripts. Consequently, they should be declared by the parties involved in the editorial process when they detect potential conflicts of interest. To avoid this problem, when they agree to evaluate a submitted text, reviewers must declare the absence of any conflicts of interest concerning the manuscript, including no prior identification of the manuscript’s authorship. Authors, for their part, are responsible for recognizing and declaring potential conflicts of interest that may interfere in the blind peer review process. They must also specify the financial support received, as well as other personal connections linked to the work’s production that may affect the proper execution of the editorial procedures. For more information, see the regulations followed by Mediações, Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest. |
Adoption of Similarity Software
Mediações uses Ephorus (Turnitin) software and CopySpider application for checking (self)plagiarism. Upon submission, all articles, without exception, first go through the anti-plagiarism program; the report generated by the application is saved as a PDF and archived in the Submission Library tab, accessible to section editors and organizers. During the screening stage, with the exception of articles whose authors have opted for open evaluation, all articles are anonymized by our interns, who remove any authorship properties that may still be present in the document's records. When authorship data is found, it is removed (from bibliographic references, for example) or replaced with anonymization markers (xxxxxx) that leave no trace and do not alter the meaning of the text. The anonymized file is then saved and attached to the Submission Library tab, remaining available to section editors or organizers, who are instructed that if the article passes the content screening and is forwarded for evaluation, only this version should be sent to the Evaluation tab to prevent confusion or version swapping throughout the evaluation process, remaining so until its final approval (or rejection) in the system. |
Gender and Sex Issues
As described in the tag 'Open Science': Mediações offers authors and reviewers the option of open evaluations and commits to promoting the FAIR Principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) and the guidelines regarding sex and gender equity in research (Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER), as well as adopting the DEIA Principles (diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility) throughout the scientific communication workflow, as outlined by SciELO (2024, p. 6) and COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) – paramount mechanisms and instruments for promoting open science and its practices. |
Ethics Committee
Mediações requests authors to provide the document related to the research approval by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP). This directive can be found both in the Submission Conditions and in the Guidelines for Authors: “Authors must ensure that their investigation follows the ethical and legal principles established by the documents that regulate ethical conduct in research involving human beings and/or animals in their area of knowledge, as indicated in journal’s Ethical Principles section, complying with all the requirements determined by the specific legislation in force in the country in which the research was conducted; and that have attached, if applicable, a copy of the approval document from a research ethics committee as a supplementary document (titled 'Approval CEP') in the submission process.” |
Copyright
Copyright for articles published in Mediações belongs to the author(s), without restrictions of any kind, even after they have been published in Mediações; in the case of partial or entire republication of the original publication, we ask author(s) to indicate the original publication in the periodical. |
Intellectual Property and Terms of Use
