ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Brief Background

Created in 1989 in the Department of Physical Education (DEF) of the State University of Maringá (UEM), the then called Revista da Educação Física (DEF-UEM) was an active participant in the flowering of ideas and discussions about the history, present and professional and academic perspectives of Brazilian Physical Education. Since then, the now Journal of Physical Education (Maringá) maintains its initial commitment to actively disseminate ideas and debates related to the interests of teachers, professionals, and researchers who focus on physical education in the contemporary world.

Open Science Compliance

The Journal of Physical Education is committed to promoting open science principles to increase transparency, reproducibility, and accessibility in scientific research. We believe that open science practices are essential to the advancement of knowledge and the integrity of the research process. In alignment with this commitment, the Journal of Physical Education has established the following policies regarding the openness of evaluation procedures, subject to the agreement of authors and evaluators:

  • Preprint Deposit : Authors are strongly encouraged to make their manuscripts available in recognized preprint repositories prior to formal submission to the Journal of Physical Education. This practice promotes early dissemination of research results and allows for greater community engagement and feedback.
  • Publication of data used in the article: The Journal of Physical Education considers the public relevance of the data that support the research published in the journal. Therefore, it encourages authors to deposit data in data repositories and reference the access address to them in the manuscript, based on the FAIR Principles, in which data must be findable, accessible, with interoperability and reusable.
  • Review with Authors' names disclosure: Both in cases where manuscripts are made available on preprint servers , and in cases where authors' consent is expressed in the Open Science Compliance Form, the Journal of Physical Education may conduct peer reviews with the authors' names disclosed to the reviewers. This approach further promotes accountability and transparency in the review process.
  • Publication of Responsible Editors: The names of the editors responsible for handling the manuscript will be published together with the articles. This practice highlights editorial oversight and increases the credibility and accountability of the editorial process.

The Journal of Physical Education remains committed to maintaining high standards of peer review and publication ethics. We believe that these open science policies will contribute to the robustness and reliability of the research published in our journal. We appreciate the cooperation of our authors and reviewers in adopting these practices for the benefit of the scientific community at large.

Ethics in Publication

The Journal of Physical Education is firmly committed to ethics and integrity in scientific publishing. To ensure that all published articles comply with the highest ethical standards, we have established clear procedures for handling complaints regarding published articles. These procedures follow the guidelines of the Committee on Ethics and Ethics. on Publication Ethics (COPE).

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

A preprint is defined as a manuscript ready for submission to a journal and that is deposited on reliable preprint servers before or in parallel with submission to a journal. This practice joins continuous publishing as mechanisms to accelerate research communication. Preprints share with journals the originality in the publication of articles and inhibit the use of double-blind procedures in the evaluation of manuscripts. For this reason, in the Journal of Physical Education authors are strongly encouraged to make their manuscripts available in recognized preprint repositories prior to formal submission to the journal.

Peer Review Process

The Journal of Physical Education publishes articles approved through a peer review process. After submission of articles, a preliminary analysis is performed to: 1) verify compliance with the journal's current editorial standards; 2) evaluate the similarity index using plagiarism detection tools Turnitin and Ithenticate ; 3) verify the adequacy of the manuscript to the journal's scope.

After approval at this stage, the article is assigned to a section editor who is responsible for monitoring the review process. The section editor reviews the article to determine whether it is ready to be sent to reviewers, whether it requires revisions before review, or whether it should be rejected due to serious methodological, textual, or analytical inconsistencies or limitations.

After approval by the section editor, the article is sent to at least two reviewers with experience and expertise in the respective subject area. The review may be conducted in a doubly anonymous manner or with simple anonymization , where reviewers have access to the names and affiliations of the authors. In the latter case, both authors and reviewers must agree in advance to the disclosure of this information. In all cases, the name of the responsible editor will be disclosed in the article.

In cases of conflicting opinions, a third review is requested. Evaluation criteria include originality, contribution to knowledge in the field, appropriate methodology, clarity, and current relevance. After review by the reviewers, articles may receive one of the following decisions from the section editors: 1) acceptance of the article, 2) rejection of the article, or 3) request for changes.

Open Data

The Journal of Physical Education believes in the importance of all data, codes, methods and other materials used and resulting from research being available in a manner that is consistent with the FAIR Principles. For this reason, it encourages authors to deposit their data in data repositories, referencing the availability address in the body of the article.

Fees

The Journal of Physical Education is an academic journal maintained by a public university, committed to the principles of Open Science and the aim of promoting free and open access to scientific knowledge. Currently, the Journal of Physical Education adopts the Gold Open Access model, in which all articles are made available free of charge to readers, but there may be publication fees ( APCs ) charged to authors.

Commitment to Open Science and Diamond Open Access Goal

Our journal is firmly committed to Open Science, promoting transparency, reproducibility and accessibility of research results. Although we currently follow the Gold Open Access model, we aim to adopt the Diamond Open Access model in the future. This model will ensure that both submission and access to articles are free of charge for authors and readers.

Article Processing Charges (APC)

Under the current Gold Open Access model, we charge publication fees ( APCs ) to cover the costs associated with producing and maintaining the journal. These costs include:

  • XML Article Markup: Converting articles to XML format, ensuring interoperability and effective dissemination of scientific content.
  • DOI Assignment Costing: Digital Object Assignment Identifiers ( DOIs ) to articles, ensuring their long-term traceability and accessibility.
  • Anti-Plagiarism Mechanisms : Implementation of advanced plagiarism detection tools to maintain the academic integrity and originality of published works.
  • Association with Publishers' Entities: Affiliation of the journal to associations of academic publishers, both in Brazil and abroad, promoting the integration and international recognition of our work.

APC charges

  • For authors with institutional affiliation in Brazil: The APC is 400 BRL.
  • For authors from other countries: The APC is 80 USD.
  • Exemption for Reviewers: Submissions with authors who have issued at least 2 reviews in the 12 months prior to the submission date will be exempt from the APC.
  • Discounts for Authors from Low- and Lower-Middle-Income Countries: Submissions with a majority of authors having institutional affiliation in low-income and lower-middle-income countries, as classified by the World Bank, will have a 50% and 40% reduction in the APC amount, respectively.

Transition to Diamond Open Access

Our goal is to eliminate APCs and offer the Diamond Open Access model, in which both submission and access to articles are free. To achieve this goal, we seek funding from funding agencies, government grants, and strategic partnerships that enable the financial sustainability of the journal without burdening authors.

Financial Sustainability

The transition to the Diamond Open Access model depends on us obtaining adequate funding to cover the aforementioned production and maintenance costs. We are committed to actively seeking these funding sources to ensure that we can fulfill our commitment to the broad and unrestricted dissemination of knowledge .
