Brief Background
Historic Background Horticultura Brasileira is the official scientific journal of the Brazilian Society for Horticultural Science (ABH), founded in 1961. Horticultura Brasileira has been published regularly and uninterruptedly for 42 years. Volume 1 was published in 1983, with two annual issues. In 1999, Horticultura Brasileira became a four-monthly journal; in 2002, it became a quarterly journal; and since 2023, it has become an annual journal with continuous publication. Since 2017, Horticultura Brasileira publishes exclusively in English (although accepting and processing papers submitted in Portuguese and Spanish) and, since 2020, it is published exclusively electronically (www.horticulturabrasileira.com.br; SciELO-Horticultura Brasileira). Over the years, Horticultura Brasileira became the main journal published in Brazil dedicated exclusively to vegetable crops and aromatic, condimentary, medicinal and ornamental plants. Mission of the Journal Horticultura Brasileira publishes original technical-scientific articles concerning vegetable crops and aromatic, spicy, medicinal and ornamental plants that are expect to make a significant contribution to the development of these sectors. |
Open Science Compliance
The Open Science movement proposes guidelines for collaborative, shared and public science. In line with these guidelines, Horticultura Brasileira adopts a series of practices, such as the open access policy, the code for good practices in editorship and the use of social media to disseminate the published work. In addition, the journal requires the precise indication of each author contribution in articles with multiple authorships and the citation, referencing and declaration of research data. Horticultura Brasileira also accepts articles published as preprints on public platforms and, if requested by the authors or referees, offers the option of opening up the peer review process, with or without identifying names. |
Ethics in Publication
It is implied that that during the development of the work, authors have strictly observed the rules of conduct and, where applicable, the legislation governing all ethical issues, including gender issues, in the country where the activities, including writing, that resulted in the paper submitted to Horticultura Brasileira were carried out. All authors must express their consent to the submission and eventual publication of the paper, taking responsibility for the content. Likewise, all authors must indicate their contribution and disclose any conflict of interest. The editorial process of Horticultura Brasileira is totally egalitarian and inclusive, with no privileges of any kind. Editors and referees act impartially, with integrity and confidentiality in their evaluations, prioritizing constructive criticism and meeting agreed deadlines. Horticultura Brasileira is guided by the Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication, available at Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication. |
Focus and Scope

Preprints
Authors are free to choose to use preprints. Horticultura Brasileira accepts manuscripts previously deposited as preprints on public platforms, such as SciELO Preprints. |
Peer Review Process
The Editorial Board evaluates the manuscripts preliminarily and checks the adherence to the scope of the journal, compliance with the publication rules, technical and/or scientific relevance and the use of language. The Editorial Board informs authors of its decision (suitable for processing or not) via the electronic submission system. If changes are necessary, authors can submit a new version for evaluation. As soon as the Editorial Board agrees on the submission, authors must pay the processing fee. The secretariat then forwards the paper to at least two ad hoc referees. As soon as there are two reviews, the Scientific Editor evaluates the paper and issues an opinion: (1) Recommended for publication, (2) Changes needed, or (3) Not recommended for publication. In situations 1 and 3, the paper goes to the Associate Editor, who makes the final decision. In situation 2, the paper returns to authors, who must prepare a new version and make it available on the electronic submission system. The Scientific Editor may or may not recommend the new version. In both cases, the new version goes to the Associate Editor, who will issue the final opinion. No changes are made to the work without the approval of authors. Once the paper has been definitively accepted, the corresponding author receives an electronic copy of the formatted version, which must return to the Editorial Board within 48 hours. Extensive changes are not accepted at this stage. Additions, deletions and edits will require the Editorial Board to re-examine the paper. Errors and omissions in the text returned to the Editorial Board are responsibility of the authors. Horticultura Brasileira publishes the name of the responsible editors at the end of the approved article. Horticultura Brasileira standard evaluation form is double-blind. However, in case of preprints, it is not possible to guarantee author anonymity. Therefore, the evaluation can be either single-blind or open. |
Open Data
If the manuscript has additional data, the corresponding author must provide a statement of availability appointing location, nature and referencing of these data. The following links provide support for information on supplementary data: |
Fees
The processing fee is US$ 50.00, when the first author is member of the Brazilian Association for Horticultural Science or any sister scientific association and is up to date with the annual dues. In any other situation, the extended processing fee applies (US$ 180.00). Processing fees are non-refundable. Horticultura Brasileira also has a page charge of US$ 20.00 and a cataloguing fee of US$ 1.00 for indexing each bibliographic reference from the 26th reference of the paper onwards. |
Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy
It is implied that during the development of the work, authors have strictly observed the rules of conduct and, where applicable, the legislation governing all ethical issues, including gender issues, in the country in which the activities, including writing, that resulted in the submitted manuscript took place. All authors must express their consent to submission and eventual publication of the paper, taking full responsibility for the content. Likewise, all authors must indicate their individual contribution to the manuscript and disclose any conflict of interest. The editorial process of Horticultura Brasileira is totally egalitarian and inclusive, with no privileges of any kind. Editors and referees act impartially, with integrity and confidentiality in their evaluations, prioritizing constructive criticism and meeting agreed deadlines. Horticultura Brasileira is guided by the Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication. |
Policy on Conflict of Interest
Conflicts of interest can be of a personal, commercial, political, academic or financial nature. Conflicts of interest occur when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that may influence manuscript preparation or evaluation. When submitting a manuscript, authors are expected to disclose any conflict of interest that may have influenced their work in a signed document attached to the submission. For more information, see Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest. |
Adoption of Similarity Software
Horticultura Brasileira is in the process of adopting similarity checking software. |
Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources
Regarding the use of the so-called artificial intelligence resources, Horticultura Brasileira adopts the instructions, recommendations and precautions of the Guide to the use of Artificial Intelligence tools and resources in the SciELO Network (Guide to the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools and Resources in Research Communication on the SciELO Network). We accept AI use in the preparation of manuscripts, but stress that any AI-generated content must be informed in the abstract and in Material & Methods or equivalent section. AI use during the editing process is also accepted, for example during evaluation and in the identification of similarities, and must also be reported. Hiding the use of AI or AI-produced content is an ethical breach that violates the principles of transparency and honesty in science. |
Gender and Sex Issues
It is implied that authors have complied with the legislation and rules of conduct governing gender issues in the place where the activities were carried out, including writing, during the development of the work. The editorial process of Horticultura Brasileira is totally egalitarian and inclusive, with no privileges of any kind. |

Avoid too much information, concentrating on what is actually relevant. Images, as other assets, must have titles, captions, and footers that make them understandable without the need to consult other parts of the manuscript. They must be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in separate files in .jpg or .png format with high resolution (600 dpi). Images and their titles, captions, and footers should be included at the end of the manuscript. However, their intended position in the published article must be clearly indicated. |
