Geousp – Espaço e Tempo is published by the Postgraduate Program in Human Geography (PPGH) and the Postgraduate Program in Physical Geography (PPGF) at the University of São Paulo. Founded in 1997, Geous has established itself in recent years as one of the most prominent geography journals in Latin America, holding an A1 rating. Geousp offers free, non-commercial access and submission, funded by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes) and the Portal de Revistas da Universidade de São Paulo. Its primary aim is to disseminate original and unpublished scientific articles on Brazilian geography. The former print version held the ISSN 1414-7416, and in 2009, it transitioned to an electronic format with ISSN 2179-0892.

Over the years, Geousp has undergone several changes to enhance its editorial processes, adopting practices aligned with the standards of high-level scientific journals, and by 2024, it is positioned among the most important publications in Latin American geography. 

From 1997 to 2009, the journal was published exclusively in print. In 2010, it transitioned to an electronic format using the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform, and its previous print collection was digitized. Today, the entire archive is fully accessible through the USP Journal Portal, which, since 2008, has hosted most of the University of São Paulo's journals.

Since 2014, the entire editorial process has been conducted through the OJS platform, from manuscript submission by the author, through the reception and blind peer review processes, to final layout preparation.

Since joining the SciELO Brazil Collection in 2021, Geousp has adhered to the network's criteria, policies, and procedures for national journals, as well as the Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication and embraces the challenges outlined in the Declaration in Support of Open Science with a focus on IDEA—Impact, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility. 

The journal employs two peer review models: double-blind, where both the author and the reviewer remain anonymous during and after the evaluation, and open review.

The publication of the manuscript as a preprint must occur after it has been accepted for evaluation by Geousp Journal. The preprint link must be shared with the editorial team. 

We recommend that the author use only repositories and are recognized in the academic community, such as universities or SciELO Preprints. 

Once approved for publication, the manuscript may not undergo any content changes. Any additions to the manuscript after submission must be communicated to the journal editor, and a new round of evaluation will be conducted. 

After the article is published in the journal, the author must commit to removing the preprint version from the repositories to avoid indexing and citation conflicts.

If an author wishes to submit an article previously published as a preprint, they must provide the duly completed Open Science Compliance Form at the time of submission.

In cases where the author chooses to publish a preprint, the same journal standards and editorial ethics must be adhered to. 

The content of the published texts is the sole responsibility of the authors.

Geousp Journal supports and practices Open Science principles, promoting greater agility and transparency in the editorial process. As part of the SciELO Brazil Collection, Geousp adheres to the SciELO Network's criteria, policies, and procedures for national journals, as well as the Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication. It also embraces the challenges outlined in the Declaration in Support of Open Science with a focus on IDEA—Impact, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility.

Once accepted for evaluation on the Geousp Journal platform, authors may, if they wish, publish their manuscripts on reputable preprint servers and/or in institutional repositories during the editorial process to encourage productive feedback and increase the impact and citation of their work.

Acceptance for evaluation refers to the process of receiving the manuscript, during which it undergoes a review to ensure compliance with submission guidelines and a check through an anti-plagiarism program, ensuring the reliability of the submissions evaluated by Geousp Magazine.

To ensure transparency in the editorial process, the final version of the article will indicate the Section Editor responsible for the evaluation, the dates of submission and acceptance, as well as the contribution of each author, when applicable.

The author is responsible for adhering to good practices related to open science, as well as upholding ethical standards in scientific production and the content of the published manuscript. Failure to comply with these parameters may result in the rejection of the submission and potential legal sanctions in accordance with the law.

Geousp – Espaço e Tempo upholds ethical principles and respect for academic culture and intellectual production, ensuring the ethical conduct of all parties involved in the publication process: authors, editors, and reviewers.

The journal is committed to incorporating into its mode of operation strategies that aim to combat gender and racial inequality and geographical disparities in the academic editorial sphere. 

The journal’s editorial decisions are not influenced by commercial considerations or revenue sources.

Anti-plagiarism actions

Plagiarism, or the use of someone else's verbal or written ideas or formulations without due credit – showing unequivocally that they are ideas or formulations of one's authorship – is ethically unacceptable in the scientific community.

Authors must meet the requirement of originality and novelty in the article, whether in whole or in part and ensure proper credit is given to all sources and references cited in the manuscript.

Authors should not transcribe passages from their previously published works without proper citation and reference formatting.

Geousp uses Similarity Check (iThenticate) to detect all forms of plagiarism, including self-plagiarism.

Articles with more than 10% self-plagiarism will be rejected. This percentage is acceptable only for brief excerpts within the body of the text and does not apply to continuous text in the abstract, entire sections, or continuous paragraphs.

In the case of publishing research results from master's or doctoral work, Geousp considers dissertations and theses as prior publications. Therefore, it advises that new contributions to the topic of the already published research be incorporated into the manuscript submitted for evaluation. 

Editorial Board Roles and Responsibilities

The decision to publish manuscripts lies with the editors, who are guided by the journal's policies and ensure compliance with current legal requirements regarding defamation, copyright infringement, and plagiarism.

Political, ideological, or religious views, as well as differences in theoretical or methodological perspectives, should not influence actions or decisions made during the editorial process. Actions aimed at mitigating the low representation of women, trans, and black people in the Brazilian scientific editorial field are adopted during the editorial process.

Editors do not conduct the editorial process for manuscripts in which they recognize a conflict of interest.

The editor-in-chief or assistant editor assigns a section editor to manage the manuscript's editorial process, ensuring that information about submitted manuscripts is disclosed only to reviewers and maintaining confidentiality throughout the process.

The identities of authors and reviewers are kept confidential, and the editorial committee treats manuscripts as confidential documents.

The editorial department handles all editorial activities with the utmost discretion, particularly those involving plagiarism reports or other ethical violations.  In this regard, editors take appropriate action when presented with ethical complaints concerning submitted manuscripts or published articles. Any action by the journal will only be initiated following a formal and clearly identified complaint.

Following the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), in cases of suspected misconduct, whether concerning articles in the press or already published, the editors ensure that the authors are given the right to a fair hearing. All reports will be investigated, regardless of when the article was approved. The documentation relating to the complaint remains in the custody of the journal.

Regarding requests for reconsideration of rejected manuscripts, the editors may employ three options:

• determine whether the decision was clearly explained to the author, ensuring it was not based on erroneous or questionable information, such as a misinterpretation of the manuscript or inadequate guidance from the reviewer;
• reconsider rejected manuscripts when the author provides valid reasons why the decision may have been incorrect and is willing to submit a revised version addressing the reviewers' or editors' comments;
• encourage resubmission of potentially acceptable manuscripts that were rejected due to the need for significant revisions or additional data.

In the case of errata and retractions, they will be published in accordance with the Guide for the Registration and Publication of SciELO Errata.

Duties of the Reviewers:

Papers received for review should be treated as confidential documents.

Reviewers must complete the conflict-of-interest declaration, provided in the evaluation form.

They must also maintain the confidentiality of any information provided by the publisher or the author and must not retain any copies of the manuscript. Reviewers should not use information or ideas obtained from reading the manuscript for their benefit.

Lastly, they may suggest relevant published works that were not cited in the manuscript and should alert the editors to any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript and other published works of which they are aware.

Duties of the Authors:

An author or co-author is defined as anyone who has actively contributed to the conception, development, analysis, or interpretation of data, as well as the final drafting of the manuscript.

Authors must be aware of and agree to the submission conditions and the terms of the copyright statement found in the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform, hosted on the USP Journal Portal. 

The rights to the content of the work remain with the authors, who grant the journal the right of first publication, while also permitting the reproduction and publication of graphics, maps, diagrams, photographs, interviews, etc.

Furthermore, authors must ensure that the manuscripts are original and that all consulted texts are properly cited. Any form of plagiarism constitutes unethical and unacceptable behavior.

The submitted manuscript must not be under evaluation by another journal during the editorial process at Geousp (if so, this must be justified in the "Comments to the Editor").

Authors must be affiliated with a higher education institution, researchers from a research institute, or have a past or current association with a graduate program (resulting in the attainment of a degree or an ongoing relationship).

Authors must ensure their anonymity following the blind peer review process by replacing their names in all self-references with the term "Author" (this includes maps, charts, and tables). The submission file must be in Word format, with no identifying information in the body of the text or the file properties.

All information provided during submission, including metadata, must be accurate and is the sole responsibility of the authors. They must also ensure that the manuscript has not been submitted for evaluation or published elsewhere.

• Contribution must be original and unpublished. The text may have one or two authors, and in such cases, each must indicate their specific contribution to the article.

Any relevant information that may affect the review process should be included in the "Comments for Editor" section during the online submission process (USP Journal Portal).

It is the author's responsibility to disclose all funding sources and support that contributed to the research and the production of the manuscript.

Authors are permitted and encouraged to upload their documents to personal pages or institutional portals, both before and after publication in this journal (with the correct bibliographic reference of the article).

Checking compliance with manuscript submission standards

As part of the submission process, authors must verify that their submission complies with all of the following requirements. Submissions that do not meet these standards will be returned to the authors. 

• All submissions must be unpublished and cannot be simultaneously submitted to another journal for review.
• Geousp does not accept event proceedings, monographs, theses, or dissertations (including their chapters).
• The correct section must be selected for the submission.
• Submissions in Portuguese or Spanish are accepted.
• Manuscripts must have abstracts and keywords in Portuguese and English—mandatory—and a third in either Spanish or French. If the manuscript is in Spanish, the abstracts will be presented in this order: Spanish, Portuguese, and English.
• All metadata must be provided in the three languages specified in this submission, strictly adhering to the instructions.
• The ORCID number must be provided;
• Institutional information (university or research institute) and a brief biography (two to three lines) must be included in the respective field.
• All editorial process costs, including reception, evaluation, standardization, layout, and XML marking, are covered by the Postgraduate Program in Human Geography (PPGH) of the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages, and Human Sciences, along with funds provided by the USP Journal Portal, both from the University of São Paulo. 
• In line with the parameters guiding journals indexed on the SciELO platform, accepted articles must be translated into English. The cost of the translation is borne by the author. 
• For blind peer review, the manuscript must not contain the authors' names.
• When the author refers to themselves, their surname must be replaced with the term "Author."
• Avoid self-citations or citing self-authored materials.
• Figures, tables, maps, charts, and other illustrations must not include the author(s)' names, but instead use "(Author, year)." 
• Do not use information that could identify the authorship of the manuscript, such as phrases like "as we concluded in previous work (reference or citation)..."
• Acknowledgments to colleagues or institutional affiliations that could reveal the author's identity should not be included.
• The user ID in the Properties option in Word must be cleared. 
• Images (if any) must be submitted both within the Word file and separately as .jpg files with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
• The manuscript must include references to the images and tables within the body of the text. 
• A statement confirming that the research was approved by an institutional ethics committee, if applicable, must be included.

It is the responsibility of the editors to determine whether the manuscript is unpublished and aligned with the journal's scope:

• Article – An unpublished text resulting from research, not a graduation monograph, a project of any nature, or a field research note. The submission will proceed to blind peer review if the text offers a theoretical contribution or unpublished analytical material, not merely new empirical data. Maximum length: 8,000 words, up to 25 pages, including abstracts and bibliographic references; each abstract may have up to 150 words and 3 to 5 keywords.
• Field Research Notes – A systematization of data or unpublished information collected in the field. Maximum length: 8,000 words, up to 25 pages, including abstracts and bibliographic references; each abstract may have up to 150 words and 3 to 5 keywords. 
• Reviews – Reviews must focus on classic or reference texts in geography. The journal only publishes critical reviews, chapter organization reviews are not accepted. The maximum length is 4,000 words. 
• Cartographies, Images, and Other Graphic Expressions – Submissions should include comments on maps, graphs, and other figures, describing the methodology used, and must be accompanied by a critical debate (software, techniques, etc.). Tutorials and simple descriptions of figures are not accepted. These are shorter articles and therefore must be more focused, with the figures serving as the central instrument of the argument presented (maximum 1,200 words). 
• Thematic Dossier – This can be proposed by research groups or through a public call defined by the journal's editorial board. The submission of dossiers follows the same process as other submissions. Manuscripts are considered solely on their academic merit, regardless of any personal influence. The submission must be discussed in advance with the editor to justify its relevance, either at revistageousp@gmail.com or paulacsj@usp.br.

The submission should be discussed with the editor to justify its relevance to the journal's scope and its originality, particularly considering recently published dossiers.

The dossier will include a maximum of five articles, in addition to an introduction prepared by the organizer. An important criterion for acceptance is the institutional diversity of the authors, who must conduct research in the thematic area.

The evaluation of articles in the dossiers follows the same blind peer review process as other submissions.

The dossier proponent will serve as the organizer and collaborate with the journal editor in selecting reviewers by mutual agreement.

The journal GEOUSP accepts the publication of articles as preprints. The evaluation of preprints may be open, as anonymity is not required in such cases.

In the double-blind review, the anonymity of both the author and the reviewers must be preserved, and the editorial process is managed by the area editor.

In the latter case, reviewers' approval reports may be published, with or without reviewer identification. These reports represent a new type of literature in the SciELO methodology and are treated similarly to research articles.

In both review models, the editor responsible for the evaluation is identified in the final article. 

The data, codes, methods, and other materials used in and resulting from the research, which generally support the texts of the articles published by the journal, must be made available by the authors, when applicable, in accordance with the guidelines outlined in the following guides:

Procedures in case of unethical behavior

Geousp – Espaço e Tempo is committed to investigating, following a formal and clearly identified complaint, cases of:

• unauthorized appropriation of third-party content – use of another's content without proper authorization, particularly in cases of unpublished material;
• plagiarism – full or partial assumption of authorship of another's work, which not only violates research ethics but also constitutes a crime;
• self-plagiarism – replication of more than one-third of previous work results without presenting new findings, including conference proceedings;
• improper authorship – claiming individual authorship while excluding other co-authors. This misconduct also applies when co-authored works are presented or published without the consent of other co-authors, even when proper attribution is given;
• violation of widely accepted research practices – manipulation or falsification of documentary sources, citations, or statistical or analytical data to achieve desired outcomes, undermining the integrity of the research and, consequently, the submitted or published article.

The following actions constitute inappropriate behavior in cases of suspected misconduct during the investigation of the aforementioned cases:

• refusing to cooperate in clarifying suspicions of scientific misconduct by the author;
• failing to report cases or suspicions of misconduct;
• destroying evidence related to cases of misconduct;
• retaliating against individuals involved in reporting scientific misconduct;
• making false accusations regarding the misconduct of others.

After investigation and allowing for a full defense by those accused, verified ethical infractions will be addressed based on their severity through the following actions:

• notifying the case to the relevant parties, including the primary author, all co-authors, the employing institution(s), the study's funder(s), and those affected by unauthorized appropriation or plagiarism;
• publishing a formal notice detailing the misconduct in an appropriate venue;
• issuing a formal retraction of the already published article.

Complaints received by Geousp will be reviewed and addressed by the editorial board, which will oversee the confidential investigation. In no case will Geousp or its editors encourage any form of misconduct.

In cases of suspected misconduct in submitted manuscripts, whether reported by reviewers or identified by editors, the review process may:

• be interrupted if if clear evidence of misconduct is found;
• be suspended until the validity of the accusations is assessed;
• result in notifications to affected third parties, as outlined in the types of misconduct listed above.

If a formal complaint is made against the editors, responsibility for the investigation will be assigned to a committee designated by the PPGH or PPGF. 

Allegations, complaints, or ethical infractions not mentioned in this document will be reviewed by the editorial board in accordance with COPE practices or the guidelines of the Brazilian Association of Scientific Editors (ABEC Brasil).

In cases of close relationships with individuals, institutions, or locations, special attention must be taken to avoid conflicts of interest. When evaluating a manuscript, involving both authors and reviewers, Geousp: Espaço e Tempo rigorously follows an editorial policy aimed at preventing the involvement of individuals with personal, friendly, or adversarial relationships, as well as those involving specific institutions. 

This procedure seeks to ensure the reliability of the manuscript review process, thereby enhancing the credibility of the published articles. In this regard, authors and reviewers are asked to inform the Editorial Board if the following are evident: 

• personal or institutional conflicts (familial or political) between reviewers and authors;
• financial support obtained during the development of the work, which may affect an impartial reading and compromise the reliability of the material produced.

The use of Artificial Intelligence

To ensure excellence and transparency in the research we publish, we recommend the following measures regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI): 

• Authorship: AI tools or similar technologies do not qualify for authorship of research, nor as text or image generators.
• Authenticity and Originality: Authors using AI to generate or analyze content and/or data must ensure the originality of their work and justify its relevance to their research.
• Declaration of Use and Transparency: All manuscripts employing AI, whether for generating, analyzing, or reviewing data, or in any other capacity, must indicate in the comments to the editors how and where AI was used, including detailed information (name, version, source, usage parameters) about how the technology was applied in the manuscript development.
• Responsibility: Authors are responsible for supervising the use of AI tools carefully. They bear full responsibility for any errors, plagiarism, or other misconduct that may result from the use of AI tools, and they are accountable for the content they sign.
• Transparency: Authors must be transparent about the use of AI in the writing process of the manuscript. 

The editorial team of GEOUSP, along with the authors publishing in the journal, must always adhere to the guidelines of the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). The SAGER guidelines provide directives on reporting information about sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and the interpretation of findings. Additionally, GEOUSP follows a gender equity policy in the composition of its editorial team, which consists of more than 45% women editors.

Authors must attach a statement of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for overseeing the research, when applicable. 

Authors of articles published in GEOUSP retain the copyright of their works, licensing them under the Creative Commons Attribution CC BY 4.0 license, which allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, provided the original work is properly cited. Authors grant the journal the right of first publication.

All content of the journal and articles published by GEOUSP are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution license unless otherwise specified.

Until 2019, the journal Geousp – Espaço e Tempo used the CC-BY-NC license.

It is the authors' responsibility to understand and accept the rules of the CC-BY 4.0 attribution license, which permits distribution, remixing, adaptation, and creatiauthor'son based on the original work, even for commercial purposes, as long as proper credit is given to the original authors.

Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions (from individuals, institutions, other authors, and/or publishers) for the use of images, tables, figures, methods, or other elements used in the manuscript to be published. 

The data, opinions, and concepts expressed in the articles, as well as the accuracy of bibliographic references, are the sole responsibility of the author(s).

Geousp only publishes original articles. Authors are required to declare that their manuscript is unpublished and has not been submitted, either in part or in full, to any other journal. 

The journal publishes theoretical or thematic texts in the field of geography, in the following sections:

• Article – original text resulting from research, and not from a graduation monograph or any type of project.
• Field Research Notes – systematization of data or unpublished information collected in the field,
• Critical Review – reviews of classic or contemporary reference texts in geography.
• Cartographies, Images, and Other Graphic Expressions – includes maps, graphs, and other figures describing the methodology or creation process (software, techniques, etc.).
• Essay – section reserved for invited authors.
• Thematic Dossier – may be proposed by research groups or through an open public call with a theme defined by the journal's editorial board. The submission of dossiers follows the same procedure as other submissions. Manuscripts are considered and accepted based solely on academic merit, regardless of personal influence. The submission must have been previously discussed with the editor to justify its relevance via the following emails: revistageousp@gmail.com or paulacsj@usp.br. 

As part of the submission process, authors are required to verify that their submission complies with all listed items.  Submissions that do not comply with the standards will be returned to the authors.

The journal recommends the use of the CRediT – Contributor Roles Taxonomy.

• The submitted article may have one or two authors. An author can only resubmit manuscripts to Geousp at least one year after their last publication
• When there are two authors, the contribution of each must be indicated with at least two authorship criteria: a) each author’s contribution to the discussion of the results; b) each author’s contribution to the revision and approval of the final version of the work; These details must be included at the end of the manuscript, after the references, as follows:

As long as the "Guidelines for Authors" are followed, submissions undergo an initial screening by the editorial board.

Once approved in this screening, the texts are evaluated for merit by two ad hoc reviewers (experts in the field or related topics, with a minimum of a doctoral degree) and at least one external reviewer, assigned by the editorial board, ensuring a double-blind review system. In cases of conflicting reviews, a third ad hoc reviewer is consulted.

If the author is asked to make revisions based on the critiques or suggestions from reviewers, they have 30 days to submit a revised version. Revisions should be highlighted in red, and the new version will be re-evaluated by the editorial board or the original reviewers, depending on the extent of the revisions.

Geousp reserves the right to format the manuscripts according to its graphic standards.

The journal provides free and immediate access to its content, following the principle that freely available scientific information democratizes access to knowledge.  Authors do not pay any fees for submitting their manuscripts for evaluation.

• Images (if any) must be submitted both in the Word file and separately as .jpg files with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
• The manuscript must include references to the images and tables in the body of the text.

Citations and references must follow the ABNT standards: NBR 10520 and 6023. 

All citations must include the author's last name and the year of publication.

Direct quotes must also include the page number(s).

Direct quotes of up to 3 lines: placed in the paragraph, between quotation marks, without italics.

Direct quotes longer than 3 lines: indented 4 cm from the left, in size 11 font, single-spaced, without quotation marks or italics.

Books must be referenced as follows:

LAST NAME, I. N. A. [Initials of the Author’s Name]. Book title City of publication: Publisher, year.

Book Chapters must be referenced as follows:

LAST NAME, A. C. [Chapter Author]. Title of the Chapter In: LAST NAME, O. L. [Book Editor] (Ed.). Book title City of publication: Publisher, year. p. XX-YY [chapter page range].

Journal Articles must be referenced as follows:

Theses/Dissertations/Monographs must be referenced as follows:

LAST NAME, I. N. A. Title: subtitle. Thesis/Dissertation/Monograph (Doctoral/Master’s/Bachelor’s in [Field of Study]) – Institute/School, University, City, year.

Supplementary documents may be requested when applicable, such as: author consent forms, ethics committee approval forms, Open Science Compliance Form, or documentation proving article translation.

Authors must indicate sources of support for the work, including sponsor names, contract numbers (if applicable), and explanations of the funders' roles, as required by the funding agencies.
