About the journal

 

Brief History

 

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia is the new name of the Revista do Departamento de Psicologia - UFF. It was created in 1989 as a local publication, linked to the UFF Psychology Department. After almost 20 years of publication, the Editorial Board felt that the name of the Journal was not in keeping with the profile of the journal, which by then had gained a prominent place on the national scene of Psychology publications. With this in mind, in 2009, the Journal of the Department of Psychology - UFF was renamed Fractal: Revista de Psicologia (Fractal: Journal of Psychology), with the aim of publishing unpublished works by national and international authors in Portuguese, Spanish, English and French.

Its abbreviated title is Fractal, Rev. Psicol., which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographical references and strips.

 

 

Focus and Scope

 

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia, ISSN 1984-0292, aims to disseminate and discuss academic and scientific production. It aims to recognize the need for coexistence between the different strands of research in the field of psychology, nurturing constant debate as a way of encouraging scientific production. At the same time, it aims to stimulate dialogue with different areas of knowledge, whose themes cross over with subjectivity studies, in areas that involve the themes worked on in the Graduate Program in Psychology at the Fluminense Federal University.

 

 

Continuous flow

 

Since 2022, Fractal: Revista de Psicologia has adopted the continuous publication modality, which means that approved and edited articles are immediately published in an annual volume, without the need to close an issue or follow a set frequency. Previously, the journal was published every four months, in January, May and September. In the new format, articles no longer have a successive and sequential pagination and now have an elocation-id, a unique electronic identifier for each article in the volume.

Compliance with Open Science

 

The Open Science movement proposes guidelines for collaborative, shared and public scientific practice. Fractal: Revista de Psicologia adopts a series of practices in line with the Open Science guidelines, such as the open access policy, the code of good practice for editors and the use of social networks to disseminate published work. In addition, it requires the precise indication of the role of each author in articles with multiple authorship, encourages the sharing of analysis data sets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, scripts and additional materials, made available in open online repositories, such as SciELO Data, if they cannot be published in the work itself, information that must be indicated in the manuscript. Consequently, articles reporting research should indicate and reference the availability of the content underlying the research and the results obtained.

Also in line with Open Science practices, the journal offers authors and reviewers the option of opening up the peer review process, with or without identifying their names. Authorization to disclose their names can be given by the authors at the time of submission when filling in the Open Science Compliance Form and by the reviewers in the Evaluation Form.

In the event of publication of the evaluations on which the decision to publish the article was based, they may be edited by the journal's editorial board.

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia encourages the publication of preprint articles on public platforms, such as Preprints, SciELO  and Psyarxiv, so that, where appropriate, they can be discussed openly before being published.

The contribution of section editors is duly credited in the published article.

EDITORIAL POLICY

 

Preprints

 

Fractal accepts preprints as an option for authors submitting their manuscripts. This practice allows articles and other scientific communications to be published immediately or in parallel with their evaluation and validation by the journals. In this way, it speeds up the communication of research results, guarantees intellectual authorship and allows the author to receive comments that contribute to improving their work, before submitting it to a journal. The preprint text will be evaluated by a team of experts from the server on which it was deposited, who will check that the manuscript complies with basic criteria in terms of its structure and document types. If approved, it will receive a DOI and can be cited, facilitating greater speed and interaction in scientific communication. Although the article can only remain in the preprints repository (if the author does not want to send it to a journal), authors who opt for the preprint and subsequent or simultaneous submission to Fractal: Revista de Psicologia must: a) have their manuscript deposited exclusively on the SciELO Preprints server (https://preprints.scielo.org/index.php/scielo); and b) inform that the manuscript is deposited on the SciELO preprints server, its title and its URL in the "Open Science Compliance Form" (document to be filled in and attached as a supplementary file at the time of submission).

 

 

Open data

 

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia encourages the sharing of primary data, codes and other materials produced in research that usually underlie the submitted article. This content can be made available before or at the time of publication. Exceptions are allowed in cases of legal and ethical issues. The aim is to facilitate the evaluation of the manuscript and contribute to the preservation and reuse of the content and research approved for publication. Information on the availability (or not) of the content underlying the articles submitted must be included in the Open Science Compliance Form (document to be filled in and attached as a supplementary file at the time of submission). This sharing is the responsibility of the authors of the articles. SciELO has its own repository, SciELO Data, which is available to researchers who publish articles in the journals it indexes.

 

 

Peer review process

 

Editorial flow

The manuscript evaluation process is carried out in 2 (two) stages:

1st evaluation stage - Suitability to the standards

After submission, the manuscripts are assessed for compliance with the standards specified here in the "Instructions to Authors". At this stage, conducted by a team made up of Editors and Advisors, all the items explained for the preparation of the manuscript are checked, as well as the complete filling in of the submission metadata. If there are any mistakes, the authors will be notified and may resubmit the articles with the corrections within 15 (fifteen) days.

2nd evaluation stage - Peer review

In this stage, the co-editors assess the suitability of the manuscript to the scope of the journal and the overall quality of the text approved in the first stage.

The manuscripts approved at this stage are then monitored by Fractal's team of editors, who are responsible for appointing peer reviewers. Submissions are sent for peer review, preserving the identity of the authors and consultants (double blind review), unless the authors choose to open up the evaluation process, in accordance with the principles of Open Science.

The opinions issued by the consultants contain justifications that may suggest approval for publication without changes, approval for publication with recommendations for changes or not recommending publication. After reviewing the reformulated versions, the editors make the final decisions on the manuscripts, including the need for further reformulations. Authors will be informed of all stages. The editorial team reserves the right to make minor changes to the authors' text in order to speed up the process.

 

 

Opening options

 

The opening of the peer review process is the progressive opening of the peer review process, as long as the authors and/or referees agree. SciELO considers three options for progress in this regard. The first is to publish the names of the editors responsible for the evaluation at the end of the article. The second is to offer reviewers the option of talking directly to the author, whether or not they reveal their identity. The third is to publish the reviews of approved articles, with or without identifying the reviewers. SciELO considers reviews to be a new type of literature that should receive similar treatment to articles.

Authors can opt for one or more means of opening up the peer review process offered by the journal. The options are: a) whether or not to publish the evaluation opinions of the approved manuscript, if the submitted article is accepted for publication; and b) whether or not to interact directly with the reviewers responsible for evaluating the manuscript.

The author's options must be informed on the Open Science Compliance Form.

Evaluators may also choose, on the Evaluation Form, one or more means of opening up the peer review process offered by the journal. The options are: a) the publication or not of the evaluation opinions of the approved manuscript, if the submitted article is accepted for publication; and b) direct interaction or not with the author of the article under evaluation. Evaluators must inform themselves of their options when filling in the Evaluation Form for a given article.

 

 

Ethics in Publishing

 

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia is dedicated to complying with good practices with regard to the moral conduct of scientific journal publishing. Any form of unethical behavior, as well as plagiarism in any instance, is not accepted by the journal. Authors who submit articles to the journal declare that their content is original and guarantee that the work has not been published or is in the process of being reviewed/evaluated in any other journal. With regard to preprints, it is important to note that Fractal does not consider that the publication of articles in preprint repositories detracts from the originality of the article submitted. The journal is attentive to updates to the principles of Open Science and, in this sense, foresees that articles published in preprint repositories can be submitted to the journal, without detriment to their originality. It is also expected that all articles reporting research with human beings will contain relevant information on ethical procedures, attaching proof of approval from the Ethics Committee when submitting.

Guided by the principles recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics - COPE (http://publicationethics.org/), we advocate ethical behavior from all parties involved in the publication process.  Below we list some of the policies we have adopted in this regard.

Duties of the Editor:

  • analyze all the articles received, and is responsible for rejecting or accepting articles, based on the opinions;
  • to guarantee the desired quality standards, complying with the journal's objectives and its respective sections;
  • avoid bad practices and unethical behavior, especially plagiarism and fraudulent information;
  • selecting the evaluators/authors appropriately, taking into account the thematic affinity with the articles and the production and respectability of the academic evaluators/authors in the academic-scientific environment;
  • ensure that the articles are peer-reviewed in order to guarantee the quality of the scientific publication, justifying any significant deviation from the evaluation process;
  • evaluate submitted manuscripts based solely on their importance, originality, clarity and the relevance of the study to the scientific field, without considering the race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, nationality or political and/or ideological philosophy of the authors;
  • avoid disclosing any information about a submitted manuscript, except to referees and editorial advisors;
  • prevent the use of unpublished material published in a submitted manuscript in its own research without the express written consent of the author;
  • prevent commercial interests from compromising intellectual standards;
  • take appropriate action when ethical complaints are made about a submitted manuscript or published article, being willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies when necessary;
  • refuse to evaluate manuscripts in which I have conflicts of interest due to competitive, collaborative or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies or institutions linked to the manuscripts;
  • ensure that published research material complies with internationally accepted ethical guidelines, reserving the right to ask for guidance from the Scientific Committee appointed in this journal, should the need arise;
  • take all necessary measures in the event of suspected unethical behavior. This duty extends to both published and unpublished work.

Duties of the Editors in relation to unethical behavior:

  • any unethical manifestation identified in scientific papers published in Revista Eletrônica Fractal can be brought to the editor's attention at any time, by anyone, provided there is sufficient information and evidence for an investigation to be initiated;
  • all necessary attempts should be made to obtain a resolution to the problem; in any case, the author should be given the opportunity to respond to any allegations;
  • inform or notify the author or reviewer where it appears that there has been any misunderstanding or misapplication of acceptable standards;
  • decide to retract or formally withdraw publication from the journal.

Reviewers' duties:

  • assist the editor in making editorial decisions and, through communications, help the author to improve the article;
  • notify the editor immediately if they do not feel qualified to analyze the article or if they feel it would be impossible to read the work immediately;
  • treat manuscripts received for review by the editor or author(s) as confidential documents and do not expose them to third parties;
  • consider the relevance, correctness, originality, topicality of the discussions and references, suitability for the field of knowledge, methodological rigor and quality standards of the publication;
  • complete all the items on the evaluation form received together with the article to be evaluated;
  • keep privileged information or ideas obtained from reading manuscripts confidential and not use them for personal gain;
  • conduct reviews objectively, expressing their points of view clearly, supported by arguments;
  • identify relevant published works that have not been cited by the authors;
  • draw the editor's attention in the event of suspected plagiarism or self-plagiarism, pointing out any other published or submitted article of which they are aware that is substantially similar to the work under review;
  • refuse to evaluate manuscripts in which I have conflicts of interest due to competitive, collaborative or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies or institutions linked to the manuscripts.

Authors' duties:

  • must be academic researchers, engaged in serious and systematic work in their specific fields and subfields;
  • declare, when submitting the article, that its content is original, that it has not been published or submitted to any other publication, in any language;
  • identify (if applicable) institutions and agencies that have supported the research financially;
  • ensure that all articles reporting research with human beings contain relevant information on ethical procedures, attaching proof of approval by the Ethics Committee when submitting;
  • present an accurate account of the work carried out, as well as an objective discussion of its significance; the article should contain sufficient detail and references to enable others to replicate the work;
  • give due credit to the authors of the works and/or papers cited;
  • do not publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal; sending the same manuscript to more than one journal at the same time and/or publishing the same article in more than one journal constitutes unethical and unacceptable editorial behavior;
  • list the names of all co-authors who had a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution or interpretation of the reported study. The lead author should ensure that all appropriate co-authors are included in the article; they should also make sure that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the manuscript and have agreed to its submission for publication. People who had a hand in the research project should be listed as collaborators;
  • immediately inform the editor of the journal or the member of the Editorial Board of knowledge of a significant error or inaccuracy in their published work and cooperate with the editor to correct the article;
  • commit to working as peer reviewers for other articles in their sub-area of knowledge.
 

 

Ethics and Misconduct Policy, Errata and Retraction

 

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia is committed to upholding the integrity of the literature and publishes Errata, Expressions of Concern or Retraction Notices depending on the situation and in accordance with COPE's Retraction Guidelines.

Authors' contributions

 

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia uses the CREDiT taxonomy structure https://credit.niso.org/. All authors must describe their participation in the preparation of the manuscript using the CREDiT form available in the Conditions of Submission.

 

 

Preparing the Manuscript

 
  • Make sure that the submission is original and unpublished, i.e. the work must not have been previously published and/or submitted simultaneously to another journal; for this we recommend filling in the PDF of the Declaration of Responsibility and Conflict of Interest, which must be signed and digitally attached to the system.
  • Check that the abbreviated citations in the body of the text and in footnotes (author, year of publication and, where appropriate, page) are complete in the references at the end of the text, according to ABNT standards. All references in electronic format (journals, e-books, digital theses and dissertations) must correctly indicate the full URL at the end of the reference. Very long URLs should be shortened by: https://www.encurtador.com.br/. All links must be active.
  • Make sure you have registered to submit your iD ORCID.
 

 

Article submission format

 

Text configuration:
 

  • Word file (doc. or docx. extension), text font: Times New Roman 12; page configuration: A4; 3cm margins; line spacing: 1.5; 1.25 indent on the first line; text alignment: justified; page numbering: top right corner
  • Font type: The text should be Times New Roman 12, justified;
  • Acronyms and abbreviations: Acronyms and abbreviations must be enclosed in brackets and preceded by their full meaning when first used in the text.
  • Foreign words: foreign words, Latin expressions and titles of books and periodicals should be written in italics. Use "double quotation marks" for emphasis.
  • Abbreviated citations in the body of the text and in footnotes (author, year of publication and, where appropriate, page) should be completed in the references at the end of the text.
  • Tables, graphs and charts (in editable format, i.e. created from Word itself) should be listed and inserted in the space allocated to them with their respective sources.
  • Figures (in jpeg or png format - 600 dpi resolution) must be included in the Word file.
  • Articles must be submitted without any identification of authorship. To this end, when submitting the article, authors must correctly fill in the information in their User Profile and also the information in Step 3 (Submission Data) of the OJS platform (entering the full name, e-mail address, institution/affiliation, country and summary of the biography of each author of the article) and remove excerpts and information from the article that make it easier to identify authorship.
  • Cover Sheet: when submitting the article, the authors must send the complete metadata, via the online system, made up using the form, containing:
  • Title, keywords and abstract in Portuguese, Spanish and English.
  • Full name of each author;
  • Affiliation of each author (with University, City, State (if any), Country);
  • E-mail address of each author;
  • Indicate which of the authors is the corresponding author;
  • ORCID of each author;
  • Contribution of each author to the manuscript: Fractal adopts the specification system based on the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) system;
  • Abstract: in general terms, they should state: theme/problem, objective, methodology, results and conclusion. Abstracts should contain between 150 and 200 words.
 

 

Digital assets

 

Illustrations (tables, figures, photographs, graphic drawings, maps, flowcharts, diagrams, organization charts and others) should be of the quality required for good graphic reproduction (minimum resolution of 600 dpi) and should be inserted in the text, not at the end of the document as annexes. They should be identified at the top with the designating word, i.e. the type of illustration, followed by its order of occurrence in the text, in Arabic numerals (e.g. Table 1, Table 2, Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.). At the bottom, it is mandatory to identify the source of the illustration (even if it is self-authored).

 

 

Citations and References

 

Citations should be indicated in the body of the text, in brackets, in accordance with NBR 10520:2023.

Quotations in the text are transcribed between double quotation marks, in the case of direct or short textual quotations of up to 3 lines, and are incorporated into the paragraph. In the case of a direct or long textual quotation of more than 3 lines, it is incorporated into a separate paragraph, with a 4cm indentation from the left margin, without quotation marks.

Explanatory notes should be kept to a minimum and should appear at the bottom of the page.      

References should be presented at the end of the text, in accordance with ABNT standard NBR 6023:2002. Authors' names should be spelled out in full (do not abbreviate).

Conflict of Interest Policy

 

When submitting the article, authors must: fill in, sign, scan and send as a supplementary document the Declaration of Responsibility and Conflict of Interest (step 4 of the article submission). Conflicts of interest can be of a personal, commercial, political, academic or financial nature. They occur when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts.

 

 

Adoption of similarity checking software

 

As part of its efforts to enhance academic integrity and prevent plagiarism in publications, Fractal has adopted the service of identifying similarities between texts using the CopySpider application as a base.

Up to 30% similarity in the text is considered acceptable; above this, after verification, the author is notified to make a revision and plan to reduce this percentage to 30%.

Articles submitted for evaluation will undergo a technical review for plagiarism analysis using the Copyspider application. In the case of plagiarism, the editorial team will return the article to the author, reporting the problem. In the case of self-plagiarism, the maximum allowed is 10% of the text for articles or 50% when it is the result of a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation. Above this, the article is returned to the authors so that they can make the necessary changes and resubmit the article to the journal.

Cases of plagiarism reported to the Journal after the articles have been published will be analyzed by the editorial team and, if the complaint is confirmed, the article will be removed from the Journal immediately. Penalties may also be imposed on the authors.

 

 

Sex and gender issues

 

Fractal's editorial team and the authors who publish in the journal must always observe the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines. The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, results and interpretation of findings. In addition, Fractal observes the policy of gender equity in the formation of its editorial board.
